Distributed Hybrid Testing（DHT） is an experimental technique designed to capitalise on advances in modern networking infrastructure to overcome traditional laboratory capacity limitations. By coupling the heterogeneous test apparatus and computational resources of geographically distributed laboratories, DHT provides the means to take on complex, multi-disciplinary challenges with new forms of communication and collaboration. To introduce the opportunity and practicability afforded by DHT, here an exemplar multi-site test is addressed in which a dedicated fibre network and suite of custom software is used to connect the geotechnical centrifuge at the University of Cambridge with a variety of structural dynamics loading apparatus at the University of Oxford and the University of Bristol. While centrifuge time-scaling prevents real-time rates of loading in this test, such experiments may be used to gain valuable insights into physical phenomena, test procedure and accuracy. These and other related experiments have led to the development of the real-time DHT technique and the creation of a flexible framework that aims to facilitate future distributed tests within the UK and beyond. As a further example, a real-time DHT experiment between structural labs using this framework for testing across the Internet is also presented.

Piles are long, slender structural elements used to transfer the loads from the superstructure through weak strata onto stiffer soils or rocks. For driven piles, the impact of the piling hammer induces compression and tension stresses in the piles. Hence, an important design consideration is to check that the strength of the pile is sufficient to resist the stresses caused by the impact of the pile hammer. Due to its complexity, pile drivability lacks a precise analytical solution with regard to the phenomena *** situations where measured data or numerical hypothetical results are available, neural networks stand out in mapping the nonlinear interactions and relationships between the system’s predictors and dependent responses. In addition, unlike most computational tools, no mathematical relationship assumption between the dependent and independent variables has to be made. Nevertheless, neural networks have been criticized for their long trial-and-error training process since the optimal configuration is not known a priori. This paper investigates the use of a fairly simple nonparametric regression algorithm known as multivariate adaptive regression splines（MARs）, as an alternative to neural networks, to approximate the relationship between the inputs and dependent response, and to mathematically interpret the relationship between the various parameters. In this paper, the Back propagation neural network（BPNN） and MARs models are developed for assessing pile drivability in relation to the prediction of the Maximum compressive stresses（MCs）, Maximum tensile stresses（MTs）, and Blow per foot（BPF）. A database of more than four thousand piles is utilized for model development and comparative performance between BPNN and MARs predictions.

Early warning systems(EWss) are widely considered to be one of the most important mechanisms to prevent disasters around the globe. But as disasters continue to affect countries where EWss have already been implemented, the striking disaster consequences have led us to reflect on the focus, architecture, and function of the warning systems. since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami there has been a rapid rise in the promotion and use of EWss to minimize disaster losses and damage. However,few researchers have addressed the question of their acceptability as an adaptive measure to the existing exposure conditions. EWss are far more linked to emergency response and humanitarian crises and accepted technological interventions as solutions than they are to explicitly advance integrated analysis, disaster risk reduction, and policy making. A major flaw of EWss is that the term‘‘early’’ has been essentially used in reference to the speed of hazard onset, founded on a physicalist perspective that has encouraged a considerable dependence on *** this article we address the need for a clear understanding of the root causes and risk drivers of disaster risk creation,as advanced in the FORIN(forensic investigation of disasters) approach, as a prerequisite for the development of more articulated EWss that could contribute to disaster risk reduction through policy making and practice, based on integrated and transdisciplinary management, in the interest of sustainable development, and human welfare and well-being.

Background:Beginning with the concepts of stress developed by selye,an approach to stress and pain management,known as neuro-emotional technique(NET),has been *** is a treatment approach based on the principle that the stressor effects of dormant and/or current unresolved issues or trauma are what determine one’s bodily *** responses are relatively personalized to the conditioned,experiential and emotional reality of the ***:To determine the effect of NET on patients with chronic low back pain(CLBP)over ***,setting,participants,and interventions:In a randomized,double-blinded,placebo-controlled study conducted in a single clinic,NET or control treatments were given twice weekly for 4 weeks in a population of 112 *** outcome measures:Outcome measures,including Oswestry Disability Index,Quadruple Visual Analogue scale,the psychoneuroimmunology markers of blood serum levels of C-reactive protein,tumour necrosis factor-a,interleukin-1(IL-1),IL-6,and IL-10,and 10 dimensions of the short Form Health survey scale,were assessed at baseline and at 1,3 and 6 months following the intervention ***:Compared to placebo,NET produced clinical and statistical significance(Ps of virtually all physiological,pain and disability markers,accompanied by gains in quality-of-life indicators at 0(baseline),1,3 and 6 *** of the percentages of patients whose 5 biomarkers lay outside the normative range were achieved at 1,3 and 6 months by NET but not control ***:A randomized,controlled trial of CLBP patients indicated that 8 NET interventions,compared to placebo,produced clinically and statistically significant reductions in pain,disability and inflammatory biomarkers,and improvements in quality-of-life measures.

In recent years,large high efficiency and Net-Zero Energy Buildings(NZEB)are becoming a reality that are setting construction and energy benchmarks for the *** part of this significant effort,in 2018,Mohawk College opened the 8,981 m^(2)(96,670 ft2)Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation(JCPI)building in Hamilton,Ontario;becoming Canada’s largest NZEB and zero-carbon institutional *** building integrated a high-efficiency design,construction materials,and technologies;as well as renewable energy technologies to significantly reduce its annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas ***,the JCPI building was also designed as a living lab where students,faculty,researchers and industry are able to monitor and validate the performance of this state-of-the-art *** building was designed to have an energy use intensity of 73 kWh/m^(2)·year(0.26 GJ/m^(2)·year);hence,potentially consuming approximately 80%less energy than the average educational service building in *** paper gives an overview of the design criteria and technologies that were considered to achieve this innova-tive building.

Enabling innovation and access to health technologies remains a key strategy in combating infectious diseases in low-and middle-income countries(LMICs).However,a gulf between paying markets and the endemicity of such diseases has contributed to the dearth of R&D in meeting these public health *** the pharmaceutical industry views emerging economies as potential new markets,most of the world’s poorest bottom billion now reside in middle-income countries-a fact that has complicated tiered access ***,product development partnerships-particularly those involving academic institutions and small firms-find commercial opportunities in pursuing even neglected diseases;and a growing pharmaceutical sector in BRICs countries offers hope for an indigenous base of *** innovation will be shaped by 1)access to building blocks of knowledge;2)strategic use of intellectual property and innovative financing to meet public health goals;3)collaborative norms of open innovation;and 4)alternative business models,some with a double bottom *** such resource constraints,LMICs are poised to develop a new,more resource-effective model of innovation that holds exciting promise in meeting the needs of global health.

Background:Hirschsprung's disease(HD)is one of the most common congenital anomalies of colorectal function,affecting approximately 1 in 5000 live births,with a 4:1 male *** is characterized by aganglionosis that is most often limited to the rectosigmoid,but can extend proximally along the colon and,in rare instances,reach into the small intestine.A clinical history of delayed passage of meconium beyond 48 hours after birth,physical exam findings of abdominal distention and vomiting,and a contrast enema demonstrating a transition zone are highly suggestive of *** sources:We searched databases including PubMed,Google scholar,and scopus for the following key words:Hirschsprung's disease,rectal biopsy,pathology,ganglion cell,nerve trunk hypertrophy,pediatric constipation,and selected publications written in English that were relevant to the scope of this ***:Based on the data presented in the literature,we reviewed 1)biopsy techniques for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease,addressed inadequate biopsies,and complications from rectal biopsy,and 2)pathologic and histologic interpretation of biopsy specimens for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's ***:A well-executed rectal biopsy with expert pathologic evaluation of the specimen remains the gold standard for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease and is the subject of this review.

Objective:To investigate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of hydroalcoholic extract of scholia latifolia（***） bark commonly used in south Africa traditional medicine for the treatment of various ***:The antibacterial test and MIC was determined by using agar well diffusion and dilution methods respectively against eight strains of bacteria. The total phenol,proanthocyanidin and flavonoid contents of *** were assessed using standard *** antioxidant activity of the extract was evaluated using ferric reducing power and the free radical scavenging activity against 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl（DPPH）, 2.2’-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic-acid（ABTs）,nitric oxide（NO）,hydrogen peroxide（Hsub>2sub>Osub>2sub>） and lipid oxidation（LO）.Results:The antibacterial activity demonstrated an appreciable effect against all the gram positive bacteria at MIC between 0.016 and 10 mg/ml. while that of gram negative bacteria was above 10 mg/*** plant extract exhibited high concentration of proanthocyanidin[（300.00±0.10） mg CE/g].followed by flavonoid[（12.46±0.04 mg） TE/g]and phenol[（1 l.06±0.03） mg QE/g]***,the extract at 0.5 mg/mL scavenges ***.Hsub>2sub>Osub>2sub>.LO and NO by 87.55%.89.47%.77.15%.86.48%and 77.75%of the radicals *** reducing power was also found to be concentration dependent Conclusions: Our data suggest that *** extract has antibacterial and antioxidants activity and thus could be used as alternative therapv against antibiotic resistance bacteria and to prevent man) radical related diseases.
