The Xanterra houses are situated against the backdrop of one of America’s most spectacular natural landscapes,just a few hundred yards from the north entrance to Yellowstone National *** project consists of two single-family homes for seasonal workers,approximately 2000 square feet *** are mirrored east-to-west but otherwise identical(see Figure 1).The project was completed in 2003,and certified under LEED-NC v2.0,project#1353 on December 10,2004-the first building project in the National Park system to receive LEED(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)certification from the UsGBC(United states Green Building Council).1 The houses were built with the explicit intent that they would become a model for future green building projects at Yellowstone and other national parks,2 and the project team felt it was fitting that these houses be situated in the nation’s first national ***,they were fundamentally well-designed and constructed,and they incorporated some of the latest technologies for saving energy and water,authentically earning the label“high-performance.”Yet the project only earned the lowest possible rating(“certified”)from LEED,meaning it is barely considered *** paper documents the green design strategies through the design and construction process,with special attention paid to the influence of the LEED scorecard on collaborative decision-making and to the difficulties this project encountered during the LEED assessment *** academic studies have examined the process of LEED self-reporting and scoring within a professional setting,3 even though contingencies such as common business practices and human limitations clearly affect a project’s LEED *** paper will show that the LEED scorecard turned out to be a poor assessment tool in this case study,because the reporting procedure inaccurately reflected the architectural design and ***,there have been a few important papers that conclude that

Evaluation of a software positioning tool to support sMEs in adoption of big data analytics

Big data analytics has been widely adopted by large companies to achieve measurable benefits including increased profitability,customer demand forecasting,cheaper development of products,and improved stock *** and medium sized enterprises(sMEs)are the backbone of the global economy,comprising of 90%of businesses ***,only 10%sMEs have adopted big data analytics despite the competitive advantage they could *** research has analysed the barriers to adoption and a strategic framework has been developed to help sMEs adopt big data *** framework was converted into a scoring tool which has been applied to multiple case studies of sMEs in the *** paper documents the process of evaluating the framework based on the structured feedback from a focus group composed of experienced *** results of the evaluation are presented with a discussion on the results,and the paper concludes with recommendations to improve the scoring tool based on the proposed *** research demonstrates that this positioning tool is beneficial for sMEs to achieve competitive advantages by increasing the application of business intelligence and big data analytics.

As big data becomes an apparent challenge to handle when building a business intelligence(BI)system,there is a motivation to handle this challenging issue in higher education institutions(HEIs).Monitoring quality in HEIs encompasses handling huge amounts of data coming from different *** paper reviews big data and analyses the cases from the literature regarding quality assurance(QA)in *** also outlines a framework that can address the big data challenge in HEIs to handle QA monitoring using BI dashboards and a prototype dashboard is presented in this *** dashboard was developed using a utilisation tool to monitor QA in HEIs to provide visual representations of big *** prototype dashboard enables stakeholders to monitor compliance with QA standards while addressing the big data challenge associated with the substantial volume of data managed by HEIs’QA *** paper also outlines how the developed system integrates big data from social media into the monitoring dashboard.

This paper presents a new model of scenarios, dedicated to the specification and verification of system be- haviours in the context of software product lines （sPL）. We draw our inspiration from some techniques that are mostly used in the hardware community, and we show how they could be applied to the verification of software components. We point out the benefits of synchronous languages and mod- els to bridge the gap between both worlds.

seismic Performance Assessment of a Conventional Multi-storey Building

Recent earthquakes have revealed that conventional seismic design philosophy allows for large levels of nonstructural damage. Nonstructural earthquake damage results in extensive repair costs and lengthy functional disruptions, as nonstructural systems comprise the majority of building investment and are essential to building operations. A better understanding of the expected overall seismic performance of code-compliant buildings is needed. This study investigates the seismic performance of a conventional building. A 16-storey steel office building was designed using a modern seismic structural code(Eurocode 8). This study is the first to assess in detail the substantial earthquake repair costs expected in a modern Eurocode concentric braced frame structure, considering nonstructural systems with the FEMA P-58 procedure. The breakdown of total repair costs by engineering demand parameter and by fragility group is novel. The seismic performance assessment indicated that substantial earthquake repair costs are expected. Limitations of the Eurocode nonstructural damage methodology were revealed in a novel manner using FEMA P-58, as the prescribed drift limits did not minimize nonstructural repair costs. These findings demonstrate the need for design procedures that improve nonstructural seismic performance. The study results provide a benchmark on which to evaluate retrofit alternatives for existing buildings and design options for new structures.

Utilizing supported single atoms as catalysts presents an opportunity to reduce the usage of critical raw materials such as platinum,which are essential for electrochemical reactions such as hydrogen oxidation reaction(HOR).Herein,we describe the synthesis of a Pt single electrocatalyst inside single-walled carbon nanotubes(sWCNTs)via a redox *** via electron microscopy,X-ray photoelectron microscopy,and X-ray absorption spectroscopy show the single-atom nature of the *** electrochemical behavior of the sample to hydrogen and oxygen was investigated using the advanced floating electrode technique,which minimizes mass transport limitations and gives a thorough insight into the activity of the *** single-atom samples showed higher HOR activity than state-of-the-art 30%Pt/C while almost no oxygen reduction reaction activity in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell operating *** selective activity toward HOR arose as the main fingerprint of the catalyst confinement in the sWCNTs.

Developing oxygen-free methodology for the conversion of alcohols to carbonyls is essentially important because it suppresses the over-oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids and enables the production of energetic *** we report a finding of feasible oxidant-free dehydrogenation of glycerol over chemically-pure Au clusters synthesized by a green chemistry method named as laser ablation in liquid(LAL).As results,glycerol is dehydrogenated to form glyceraldehyde which undergoes subsequent dehydrogenation to hydroxymethyl *** this,reaction dynamics calculations find interesting dehydrogenation reaction pathways with a low-energy barrier of transition state initiated by hydrogen atom transfer from methene,which differs from the general reaction mechanism based on ***,it is interesting that the presence of additionalààOH group molecules especially H2O can effectively lower the energy barrier in the activation of the OààH and CààH bonds in *** principle is also applicable to the oxidant-free dehydrogenation of methanol and ethanol,helping to fully understand the catalytic mechanism of alcohols conversion chemistry.

Multi-agent systems for simulating spatial decision behaviors and land-use dynamics

A new method to simulate urban land-use dynamics is proposed based on multi-agent systems (MAs). The model consists of a series of environmental layers and multi-agent layers, which can interact with each other. It attempts to explore the interactions between different players or agents, such as residents, property developers, and governments, and between these players and the envi- ronment. These interactions can give rise to urban macro-spatial patterns. This model is used to simulate the land-use dynamics of the Haizhu district of Guangzhou City in 1995―2004. Cellular automata (CA) were also used for the simulation of land use changes as a comparison. The study indicates that MAs has better performance for simulating complex cities than CA.

Discovery of transition rules for geographical cellular automata by using ant colony optimization

A new intelligent algorithm of geographical cellular automata (CA) based on ant colony optimization (ACO) is proposed in this paper. CA is capable of simulating the evolution of complex geographical phenomena, and the core of CA models is how to define transition rules. However, most of the transition rules are defined by mathematical equations, and are hence not explicit. When the study area is complicated, it is much more difficult to extract parameters for geographical CA. As a result, ACO is applied to geographical CA to automatically and intelligently obtain transition rules in this paper. The transition rules extracted by ACO are defined as logical expressions rather than implicit mathematical equations to describe the complex relationships of the nature, and easy for people to understand. The ACO-CA model was applied to simulating rural-urban land conversions in Guangzhou City, China, and appropriate simulation results were generated. Compared with see5.0 decision tree model, ACO-CA is more suitable to discovering transition rules for geographical CA.
