The present investigation was carried out to evaluate anti-inflammatory and membrane stabilizing properties of methyl jasmonate(MJ) in experimental rat models of acute and chronic *** effects of MJ on acute inflammation were assessed using carrageenan-induced rat's paw edema *** granuloma air pouch model was employed to evaluate the effects of MJ on chronic inflammation produced by carrageenan in *** number of white blood cells(WBC) in pouch exudates was estimated using light *** levels of biomarkers of oxidative stress,such as malondialdehyde(MDA),glutathione(GSH) and activity of antioxidant enzymes in the exudates,were determined using *** membrane stabilizing property of MJ was assessed based on inhibition of hemolysis of rat red blood cells(RBC) exposed to hypotonic *** results indicated that MJ(25-100 mg·kg-1,i.p.) produced significant anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats(P educed the volume of pouch exudates and the number of WBC in carrageenan-induced granulomatous *** also exhibited potent antioxidant and membrane stabilizing *** conclusion,these findings suggest the therapeutic potentials of methyl jasmonate in disease conditions associated with inflammation and its anti-inflammatory activity may be related to its antioxidant and membrane stabilizing activities.

Flow fields and particle trajectories beneath a tidal bore:A numerical study

Tidal bores may appear in some estuaries when the tides quickly reach a high level. This phenomenon is rare but has a strong impact during its short duration: i.e. the river bed is significantly eroded and sediments are then transported. In this paper, the trajectories of suspended particles induced by this flow are numerically studied. Four undular bores with Froude numbers between 1.1 and 1.2 are *** similar Froude numbers, various initial flow conditions were selected to produce or not an inversion of the flow direction during the bore passage. The particle trajectories associated with each distinct flow configuration are presented and analyzed. These trajectories, estimated by solving the Maxey-Riley equation, appear to be very different even though the Froude numbers of flows are *** observations are important because the Froude number is often used to characterize a tidal bore as it describes well the free surface, however, it cannot describe the sediment transport. Finally, Chen’s model of wave-current interactions is adapted to fit the cases studied and is applied to the four bores simulated. The results highlight that this latter model can reproduce the observed trajectories and dissociate their different components. From this model, it is shown that the inertial and Basset history effects can be neglected compared to the gravity and flow entrainment effects due to the viscous drag when one wants to determine the long-term trajectories of suspended particles.

Correlationship between Diabetes Mellitus and Chronic Carbon Monoxide Intoxication

There is a data gap in the relationship between chronic carbon monoxide intoxication and diabetes mellitus manifestation. This study aims to investigate if a cause-effect relationship exists using rabbits as a choice animal model. A total of twenty rabbits were used for the study comprising equal age and weight-matched control and experimental groups. The experimental group was further divided into 10th day, 20th day and 30th CO intoxicated sub-groups. Vitreous and serum glucose, proteins, lipids, electrolytes and renal function parameters were measured using WHO-approved methods. One-way ANOVA (Post hoc-LSD) and Pearson correlational analysis were used for the data analysis. The result showed a progressive significant increase (p entrations of vitreous glucose, urea and creatinine in the experimental groups, while the concentrations of vitreous total cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, globulins, sodium, potassium and pH decreased significantly. In the same vein, the concentrations of serum glucose, triglyceride, and sodium increased significantly (p ereas concentrations of serum cholesterol, total proteins, globulins, potassium, and pH activity decreased significantly. Correlational relationships were also observed between glucose and some associated parameters in the vitreous humour and serum. In conclusion, some of the vitreous and serum biochemical parameters altered followed a similar predictive pattern and usual pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. Therefore, we found that chronic CO intoxication could be included amongst the environmental agents known to be a causative agent of diabetes mellitus.

Is it possible to improve CO_(2)solubility in potassium carbonate(K_(2)CO_(3))-based transition temperature mixtures(TTMs)?To assess this possibility,a ternary transition-temperature mixture(TTTM)was prepared by using a hindered amine,2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol(AMPD).Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)was employed to detect the functional groups including hydroxyl,amine,carbonate ion,and aliphatic functional groups in the prepared *** thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),it was found that the addition of AMPD to the binary mixture can increase the thermal stability of *** viscosity findings showed that TTTM has a higher viscosity than TTM while their difference was decreased by increasing *** addition,eyring’s absolute rate theory was used to compute the activation parameters(∆G^(*),∆H^(*),and ∆S^(*)).The CO_(2)solubility in liquids was measured at a temperature of 303.15 K and pressures up to 1.8 *** results disclosed that the CO_(2)solubility of TTTM was improved by the addition of *** the pressure of about 1.8 MPa,the CO_(2)mole fractions of TTM and TTTM were 0.1697 and 0.2022,*** confirm the experimental data,density functional theory(DFT)was *** the DFT analysis,it was found that the TTTM+CO_(2)system has higher interaction energy(|∆e|)than the TTM+CO_(2)system indicating the higher CO_(2)affinity of the former *** study might help scientists to better understand and to improve CO_(2)solubility in these types of solvents by choosing a suitable amine as HBD and finding the best combination of HBA and HBD.

Background:evidence suggests that wintering waterbirds have become conspicuously more concentrated at two largest lakes of the Yangtze River Floodplain,east Dong Ting Lake(Hunan Province,29°20′N,113°e)and Poyang Lake(Jiangxi Province,29°N,116°20′e),relative to other lakes,despite the establishment of reserves *** this relationship is likely due to greater extent of undisturbed habitats in larger lakes,we understand little of the drivers affecting individual behaviours behind this ***:We tracked wintering movements of three duck species(eurasian Wigeon Mareca penelope,Falcated Duck *** and Northern Pintail Anas acuta)using GPS transmitters,examining differences between the two largest lakes and other smaller lakes in ducks’habitat use,duration of stay at each lake and the daily distances moved by the tagged birds while at these ***:The eurasian Wigeon and Falcated Duck stayed five times longer and almost exclusively used natural habitat types at the two large lakes(91‒95%of positions)compared to length of stay time at smaller lakes,where they spent 28‒33 days on average(excluding the capture site)and exploited many more different habitats(including c.50%outside lakes).Conclusions:Our study is the first to show that shorter length of stay and more varied habitat use by ducks at small lakes may contribute to explaining the apparent regional concentration of numbers present of these and other species at the largest lakes in recent *** compares with their declining abundance at smaller lakes,where habitat loss and degradation has been more manifest than on the larger lakes.

Background: Foraging theory predicts that animals select patches that offer the highest net rate of energy gain. Hence, prey distribution patterns and spatiotemporal heterogeneity play important roles in determining animal feeding patch selection. For waterfowl foraging on buried aquatic plant tubers, the distribution and biomass of these plant organs vary with depth in the substrate. Since excavation costs also increase with depth, the energy intake of the animals foraging on these plants is highly sediment depth dependent. Methods: Here, using observations of Swan Geese (Anser cygnoides) foraging on Vallisneria natans tubers, we test our hypothesis that geese feeding on tubers buried at intermediate sediment depth maximize their daily energy intake because of the interaction between tuber size and abundance with depth. To do this, we measured the distribution patterns of buried Vallisneria tubers under both undisturbed conditions and post-exploitation by geese (i.e. giving-up conditions). We investigated the relationship between tuber size and burial depth, and total tuber biomass within each sediment layer in undisturbed and exploited plots. Finally, we compared modelled Swan Goose daily energy intake feeding on Vallisneria tubers buried at different sediment layers (1–10, 11–20 and 21–30 cm below the surface). Results: Dry weight of Vallisneria tubers linearly increased with burial depth, while average total dry weight density of tubers showed a unimodal relationship, peaking at intermediate levels. Not surprisingly, Swan Geese foraged most intensively on tubers buried at intermediate sediment depths, where they maximize their daily energy intake. Our results support our hypothesis that Swan Geese feeding on tubers at intermediate depths maximize their daily energy intake. Wetlands are essential components of our global ecosystem. They have important functions which include maintenance of the environment through mitigating the degree of flooding, regulating the local and global climate and lessening the degree of erosion by trapping sediments. The aim of this research is therefore to investigate how relevant wetland parameters mitigate flood in Apiti wetland soil of middle River Mamu basin of Nigeria. For the purpose of the study, the wetland was divided into three;A (the upland region), B (the flood plain), and C (the raffia palm area). The soil flood mitigation parameters examined are bulk weight, moisture content, and saturation water content. These were employed to calculate the volume of flood mitigation within three sub-sites of the wetland. The statistical methods employed were One Way ANOVA and Students t-Test to see whether differences occur in the flood mitigating ability of the soil. Results obtained show that flood mitigation was highest within study site B (flood plain) with 6.4 × 106 m3 volume of flood mitigation and lowest in site A (upland region) with 1.5 × 106 m3. In conclusion we recommended that the study be scaled up to other wetlands in Nigeria.

Freestanding hierarchical porous carbon film derived from hybrid nanocellulose for high-power supercapacitors

Nanocellulose is a sustainable and eco-friendly nanomaterial derived from renewable biomass. In this study, we utilized the structural advantages of two types of nanocellulose and fabricated freestanding carbonized hybrid nanocellulose films as electrode materials for supercapacitors. The long cellulose nanofibrils （CNFs） formed a macroporous framework, and the short cellulose nanocrystals were assembled around the CNF framework and generated micro/mesopores. This two-level hierarchical porous structure was successfully preserved during carbonization because of a thin atomic layer deposited （ALD） A1203 conformal coating, which effectively prevented the aggregation of nanocellulose. These carbonized, partially graphitized nanocellulose fibers were interconnected, forming an integrated and highly conductive network with a large specific surface area of 1,244 m2·g-1. The two-level hierarchical porous structure facilitated fast ion transport in the film. When tested as an electrode material with a high mass loading of 4 mg·cm-2 for supercapacitors, the hierarchical porous carbon film derived from hybrid nanocellulose exhibited a specific capacitance of 170 F·g-1 and extraordinary performance at high current densities. even at a very high current of 50 A-g-l, it retained 65% of its original specific capacitance, which makes it a promising electrode material for high-power applications.
