Multipartite entangled states like the W-class are of growing interest since they exhibit a variety of possible applications ranging from quantum computation to genuine random number generation. Here, we present a universal setup to generate high-order single photon W-states based on three-dimensional integrated-photonic waveguide struc- tures. Additionally, we present a novel method to charac- terize the device＇s unitary by means of classical light only.

The role of chirp on the light-matter interaction of femto- and pico-second laser pulses with functional structured surfaces is studied using drag-reducing riblets as an example. The three-dimensional, periodic microstructure naturally gives rise to a mutual interplay of （i） reflection, （ii） scattering, and （iii） diffraction phenomena of incident coherent light. Furthermore, for femtosecond pulses, the structure induces （iv） an optical delay equivalent to a consecutive temporal delay of 230 fs in places of the pulse. These features enable studying experimentally and numerically the effect of tuning both pulse duration τ and spectral bandwidth Δω on the features of the wideangle scattering pattern from the riblet structure. As a result, we discovered a significant breakdown of fringes in the scattering pattern with decreasing pulse duration and/or increasing spectral bandwidth. This unique type of chirp control is straightforward/y explained and verified by numerical modeling considering the spectral and temporal interaction between different segments within the scattered, linearly chirped pulse and the particular geometric features of the riblet structure. The visibility of the fringe pattern can be precisely adjusted, and the offstate is achieved using τ 〈 230 fs or Δω〉 2.85 × 10^13 rad/s.

Atherosclerosis is the most prevalent disease in middle and later years of human life. Heart attacks and strokes are among the most frequent causes of death. New approaches in therapy are the use of NSAID’s (nonsteroidal antiphlogistical drugs) of the new generation (selective inhibitors of COX-2) and DHEA (Dehydroepiandrostenon). The key enzyme of prostaglandin synthesis, the COX-2 isoenzyme, is predominantly found in inflammatory tissue. Out of this results a possible importance of COX-2-inhibitors in prophylaxis of atherosclerosis. Our study intended to examine the significance of COX-2 and the COX-2-formed prostanoids, as well as the significance of COX-2-independent iso-prostanes on atherosclerosis. For that purpose we tested the effect of the selective COX-2-inhibitor Celecoxib on rabbits fed with cholesterol and compared this with the effect of the steroid hormone DHEA in 4 groups: healthy control, cholesterol-fed control, DHEA-group and Celecoxib group. In the test prostanoids, nitrate and nitrite were measured by gas chromatograpy/tandem-mass-spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in 24-hours-collected urine. Additionally we measured cholesterol and triglycerides in plasma. The aortas of the examinated animals were measured optically using a planimetrical method. The measurement of prostanoids, isoprostanes, nitrate and nitrite showed considerable variations and particulary significant differences (p < 0.01) even in the initial values. By the treatment with Celecoxib the rate of atherosclerosis was reduced in a highly significant way in comparison to the cholesterol group and the DHEA-group. Consequently the test demonstrated a significant role of COX-2 in the development of atherogenesis.

Vitamin D co-regulates cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis in numerous tissues, including cancers. The known anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic actions of the active metabolite of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D [1,25（OH）2D] are mediated through binding to the vitamin D receptor （VDR）. Here, we report on the unexpected finding that stable knockdown of VDR expression in the human breast and prostate cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and PC3, strongly induces cell apoptosis and inhibits cell proliferation in vitro. Implantation of these VDR knockdown cells into the mammary fat pad （MDA-MB-231）, subcutaneously （PC3） or intra-tibially （both cell lines） in immune-incompetent nude mice resulted in reduced tumor growth associated with increased apoptosis and reduced cell proliferation compared with controls. These growth-retarding effects of VDR knockdown occur in the presence and absence of vitamin D and are independent of whether cells were grown in bone or soft tissues. Transcriptome analysis of VDR knockdown and non-target control cell lines demonstrated that loss of the VDR was associated with significant attenuation in the Wnt/0-catenin signaling pathway. In particular, cytoplasmic and nuclear β-catenin protein levels were reduced with a corresponding downregulation of downstream genes such as Axin2, Cyclin D1, interleukin-6 （IL-6）, and IL-8. Stabilization of 0-catenin using the GSK-3β inhibitor BIO partly reversed the growth-retarding effects of VDR knockdown. Our results indicate that the unliganded VDR possesses hitherto unknown functions to promote breast and prostate cancer growth, which appear to be operational not only within but also outside the bone environment. These novel functions contrast with the known anti-proliferative nuclear actions of the liganded VDR and may represent targets for new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in breast and prostate cancer.

Background: To present a new idea for rapid management of tooth avulsion in young children and adolescents (age: 6 to 16) by this case report. Case presentation: A nine-year-old boy presented with loss of upper permanent central incisor in early mixed dentition (6 to 10 years, phase I). The not yet fully resorbed primary canine was used as tooth transplant for the lost incisor. The intentional renounce on endodontic treatment of the primary transplant permits natural exfoliation of the transplant occurring either spontaneously or due to undermining resorption through the adjacent erupting teeth. In the late mixed dentition (10 to 16 years, phase II), the primary tooth transplant is electively removed and replaced by a premolar autotransplant for long-term rehabilitation of the meanwhile adolescent patient. Results: Primary canine autoTX acts as a temporary denture with instant surgical gap closure. Ensuing premolar autoTX in phase II then acts as permanent denture with excellent 10 years survival rates. Patient satisfaction issued by a questionnaire resulted in good to very good school grades for both phases of autotransplantation. Conclusions: The “TPTX” concept is a new surgical approach that immediately restores the patient’s function and aesthetics after tooth loss in early childhood supporting the growth of local bone and soft tissue in the growing adolescent jaw.
