In the Sahel of Africa, where 90 % of the population depends on natural resources for their liveli- hood, a large part of the soils are structurally unstable, prone to crusting and hard setting, and have low water holding capacity, which hamper vegetation establishment. The effect of soil restoration techniques on survival and growth of seedlings of Acacia nilotica, Acacia tortilis and Jatropha curcas was tested in completely barren, degraded land in a Sahelian ecosystem in Burkina Faso. A total of 522 seedlings （174 plants of each plant species） were planted in a randomized complete block design with three replicates combining three soil preparation techniques： half-moon, zai＂ and standard plantation. Survival and growth rates evaluated over 20 months were significantly higher using the half-moon technique compared with the other two techniques. Survival rates of plant species planted using half-moon technique were 62.5, 28.57 and 10.71% for A. nilotica, A. tortilis and J. curcas respec- tively, but in za＇i and standard planting, seedling survival was zero. The low survival rate of J. curcas using the half-moon technique may indicate that J. curcas is unsuit- able for barren and degraded land, whereas A. nilotica and A. tortilis appear to be promising tree species for rehabil- itation of degraded land.

To the Editor:Total pancreatectomy with islet cell autotransplantation(TPIAT)is a viable treatment option upon failed endoscopic and medical therapy for patients with chronic *** procedure involves surgical removal of the entire pancreas,isolation of islet cells and reinfusion of these cells into the liver via portal vein[1,2].The risk of contamination to the final islet cell product can occur at several stages of the isolation procedure[3].In order to ensure the sterility of the islet cell product,multiple samples from the preservation and cannulation solution,and the final islet cell product are sent for bacterial *** studies have found variable clinical consequences of these cultures on infectious com-plications or graft function[3-9].Herein we aimed to determine the incidence of infection in 60 days post-TPIAT and its association with the culture data.

Southern Europe is a highly fire-prone region where extreme fires have often disastrous consequences on both structures and *** activities and fire weather conditions favouring ignitions and propagation have always been the drivers of such fires but anthropogenic climate change alongside the extension of wildland-urban interface(WUI)that concentrates both assets and fire ignitions have the compounding effect of exacerbating fire *** are currently not adequately prepared to sustain events whose frequency and intensity are foreseen to increase in the future as shown during the extreme fires that occurred recently in Euro-Mediterranean *** work presents the context of WUI fires in the Euro-Mediterranean region,their driving forces and their impacts on society,with insights from three recent catastrophic fires that drew much *** this context,we propose a conceptual framework for understanding the WUI issue assessing the implications for fire risk and providing some guidance to mitigate this risk,updated management strategies as well as comments about gaps in our current knowledge and how we might address this problem in the future.A successful approach to reduce fire risk in the future will require building resilient landscapes and communities better prepared to face these extreme fire events in which WUI population,forest managers,land planners,civil protection,and policy-makers need to work together to improve the safety and resilience of these fire-prone areas.

Airborne micro- and nanoparticles-aerosols - play an important role in many natural phenomena and in a variety of industrial processes, as well as the public health issue. They may be of natural or anthropogenic origin; their presence in an environment might be intentional or due to undesirable release. In any case, merely the particle detection and characterization, ideally in real-time, provide an insight into the potential burden allowing also controlling and abatement measures. Due to the broad size range it is not possible to characterize the entire particle spectrum with only one method. This contribution discusses selected optical techniques based on elastic light scattering, which are suitable for characterization of micrometer sized particles and particular electrical techniques allowing measurement of nanoparticles. It is shown that combination of instruments measuring different properties of the same nanoparticles offers derivative parameters contributing to more complete characterization of aerosols

Comparative study of the effects of terlipressin versus splenectomy on liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy in rats

BACKGrOUND: Post-hepatectomy liver failure as a result of insufficient liver remnant is a feared complication in liver surgery. Efforts have been made to find new strategies to support liver regeneration. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of terlipressin versus splenectomy on postoperative liver function and liver regeneration in rats undergoing 70%partial hepatectomy. METHODS: Seventy-two male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into three groups(n=24 in each group): 70% partial hepatectomy as control(PHC), 70% partial hepatectomy with splenectomy(PHS) or 70% partial hepatectomy with a micropump for terlipressin administration(PHT). Eight rats in each group were sacrificed on postoperative day(POD) 1,3 and 7. To assess liver regeneration, immunohistochemical analysis of liver tissue using bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU) and Ki-67 labeling was performed. Portal venous pressure, serum concentrations of creatinine, urea, albumin, bilirubin and prothrombin time as well as liver-, body-weight and their ratio were determined on POD 1, 3 and ***: The liver-, body-weight and their ratio were not statistically different among the groups. On POD 1, 3 and 7 portal venous pressure in the intervention groups(PHT:8.13 ±1.55, 10.38±1.30, 6.25±0.89 cm H2O and PHS: 7.50±0.93,8.88 ±2.42, 5.75±1.04 cm H2O) was lower compared to the control group(PHC: 8.63±2.06, 10.50±2.45, 6.50±2.67 cmH2O). Hepatocyte proliferation in the intervention groups was delayed, especially after splenectomy on POD 1(Brd U: PHS vs PHC, 20.85% ±13.05% vs 28.11%±10.10%; Ki-67, 20.14%±14.10% vs 23.96% ±11.69%). However, none of the differences were statistically ***: Neither the administration of terlipressin nor splenectomy improved liver regeneration after 70% partial hepatectomy in rats. Constipation is a common community health *** are many factors that are widely thought to be associated with constipation but real-world evidence of these associations is difficult to *** potential risk factors may be categorised as demographic,lifestyle and health-related *** review presents the available evidence for each factor by an assessment of quantitative data from cross-sectional studies of community-dwelling adults published over the last 30 *** appears that there is evidence of an association between constipation and female gender,residential location,physical activity and some health-related factors such as self-rated health,some surgery,certain medical conditions and certain *** available evidence for most other factors is either conflicting or ***,further research is necessary to determine if each factor is truly associated with constipation and whether it can be regarded as a potential risk *** is recommended that studies investigating a broad range of factors are conducted in populations in community *** analyses should be performed to account for all possible confounding *** this way,valuable evidence can be accumulated for a better understanding of potential risk factors for constipation in the community.
