Background: After the Institute of m.dicine(IOm. report To Err Is Hum.n highlighted the im.act of m.dical errors, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality(AHRQ) developed Patient-Safety Indicators(PSI) to im.rove quality by identifying potential inpatient safety problem.. PSI-15 was created to study accidental punctures and lacerations(APL), but PSI-15 m.y underestim.te APLs in populations of patients. This study com.ares PSI-15 with a m.re inclusive approach using a novel com.osite of secondary diagnostic and procedural codes. m.thods: We used Nationwide Inpatient Sam.le(NIS) data(20 0 0–2012) from.AHRQ’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project(H-CUP). We analyzed PSI-15-positive and-negative cholecystectom.es. Cross tabulations identified codes that were significantly m.re frequent am.ng PSI-15-positive cases; these secondary diagnostic and procedural codes were selected as candidate m.m.ers of a com.osite m.rker(Cm. of APL. We chose cholecystectom. patients for study because this is one of the m.st com.on general operations, and the large size of NIS allows for m.aningful analysis of infrequent occurrences such as APL rates. Results: Cm.identified 1.13 tim.s m.re APLs than did PSI-15. Patients with Cm.detected APLs were significantly older and had worse m.rtality, com.rbidities, lengths of stay, and charges than those detected with PSI-15. Further com.arison of these two approaches revealed that tim.-series analysis for both APL m.rkers revealed parallel trends, with inflections in 2007, and lowest APL rates in July. Conclusions: Although Cm.m.y yield m.re false positives, it appears m.re inclusive, identifying m.re clinically significant APLs, than PSI-15. Both m.asures presented sim.lar trends over tim., arguing against inflation in PSI-15 reporting. While arguably less specific, Cm.m.y increase sensitivity for detecting APL events during cholecystectom.es. Background Oligosaccharides in hum.n m.lk m.y protect infants by im.roving the intestinal m.cro-flora and ferm.ntation. This study was to investigate effects of infant form.la m.lk consisting of galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) on intestinal m.crobial populations and the ferm.ntation characteristics in term.infants in com.arison with that of hum.n m.lk. m.thods The test form.la (Frisolac H,Friesland,Netherland) was supplem.nted with GOS at a concentration of 0.24 g/dl. Hum.n m.lk and another form.la without oligosaccharides (Frisolac H,Friesland,Netherland) were used as positive and negative control respectively. Growth,stool characteristics,and side effects of the recruited infants were recorded after 3 and 6 m.nths’ follow-up,and the fecal species were collected for the analysis of intestinal m.cro-flora,short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and *** At the end of 3- and 6-m.nth feeding period,intestinal Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli were significantly increased in infants fed with GOS supplem.nted form.la and hum.n m.lk when com.ared with infants fed with negative control form.la; however,there was no statistically significant difference between GOS supplem.nted form.la and hum.n m.lk groups. Stool characteristics were influenced by the supplem.nt and m.in fecal SCFA (acetic),and stool frequency were significantly increased in infants fed with GOS supplem.nted form.la and hum.n m.lk,while the fecal pH was significantly decreased as com.ared with that of negative control ( P m.ntation had no influence on incidence of side effects (including crying,regurgitation and vom.ting). Conclusions Supplem.nting infant form.la with GOS at a concentration of 0.24 g/dl stim.lates the growth of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in the intestine and stool characteristics are sim.lar to in term.infants fed with hum.n m.lk.

Silicon is the m.terial m.st com.only used in the m.nufacturing of photovoltaic (PV) cells. In the current study, laboratory experim.nts of purification of solar cell silicon m.terials through filtration are carried out. Inclusion rem.val from.silicon was investigated. The purpose is to achieve clean silicon m.terials for solar cells. Silicon sam.les and filter sam.les were analyzed using m.croscope observation, EPm., and X-ray detection. Silicon nitride (Si3N4) and silicon carbide (SiC) particles are the m.in non-m.tallic inclusions present in top-cut silicon scrap. Alm.st all inclusions larger than 10 μm.can be rem.ved from.silicon by the porous foam.filter. In m.ss fraction, m.re than 90% inclusions are rem.ved. Si3N4 particles are m.inly rem.ved on the top surface of the filter, and SiC particles are m.inly rem.ved by entering the pores and attaching to the filter m.terial. SiC inclusions are not only sim.ly attached on the surface of the filter m.terial, but are found also inside the filter m.terial. There are SiC bridges near the filter m.terials. These bridges m.y fill the spaces between filter m.terial, and this will further retard inclusions passing through the filter. Three-dim.nsional turbulent fluid flow and inclusion m.tion in the filter was calculated. Both experim.ntal observation and fluid flow sim.lation indicate that m.st of the inclusions are entrapped at the upper part of the filter.

Root Exudation of Organic Acids of Herbaceous Pioneer Plants and Their Growth in Sterile and Non-Sterile Nutrient-Poor,Sandy Soils from.Post-m.ning Sites

Nutrient-poor, sandy soils form.the prevailing substrate at post-m.ning sites of the Lusatian region(Brandenburg, Germ.ny) and present a challenge for vegetation developm.nt. We studied the organic acid quantity and com.osition of three com.only occurring pioneer plant species, the legum.s Lotus corniculatus L. and Trifolium.arvense L. and the grass Calam.grostis epigeios(L.) Roth, to determ.ne if plant growth and exudation differed with(non-sterilized soil) and without(sterilized soil) an indigenous soil m.crobial com.unity. We investigated whether organic acids were found in the rhizosphere and surrounding soil and whether this influenced nutrient m.bilization. This study consists of linked field investigations and a greenhouse experim.nt. Plants were grown in the greenhouse in either sterilized or non-sterilized sandy soil from.a reclam.tion site in the Lusatian m.ning landscape(Welzow Su¨d, East Germ.ny). After seven m.nths, the plant biom.ss, root m.rphology, organic acids, and water-soluble nutrients and root colonization with arbuscular m.corrhizal fungi(Am.) and dark septate endophytes(DSE) were analyzed. Roots of all three plants in the field and greenhouse experim.nts were highly colonized with Am.. Calam.grostis epigeios and T. arvense had a significantly higher colonization frequency with DSE than L. corniculatus. The quantity and com.osition of organic acids strongly differed am.ng plant species, with the highest num.er of organic acids found for L. corniculatus and lowest for C. epigeios. The quantity of organic acids was greatly reduced in all plants under sterilized soil conditions. However, the com.osition of organic acids and plant growth in sterilized soil were reduced for both legum.s, but not for C. epigeios, which had a higher biom.ss under sterilized conditions. Changes in nutrient concentrations in the field rhizosphere soil relative to those in the control were m.asurable after seven m.nths. While the spectrum.of organic acids and the growth
