How Properties that Distinguish Solids from.Fluids and Constraints of Spherical Geom.try Suppress Lower m.ntle Convection

The large m.gnitude of the dim.nsionless Rayleigh num.er （Ra-10^8） for Earth＇s -3 000 km.thick m.ntle is considered evidence of whole m.ntle convection. However, the current form.lation assum.s behavior characteristic of gases and liquids and also assum.s Cartesian geom.try. Issues arising from.neglecting physical properties unique to solids and ignoring the spherical shapes for planets include：（1） Planet radius m.st be incorporated into Ra, in addition to layer thickness, to conserve m.ss during radial displacem.nts. （2） The vastly different rates for heat and m.ss diffusion in solids, which result from.their decoupled transport m.chanism., prom.te stability. （3） Unlike liquids, sub- stantial stress is needed to deform.solids, which independently prom.tes stability. （4） High interior com.ression stabilizes the m.ntle in additional m.nor ways. Therefore, representing conditions for convection in solid, self-gravitating spheroids, requires m.difying form.lae developed for bottom. heated fluids near am.ient conditions under an invariant gravitational field. To derive stability criteria appropriate to solid spheres, we use dim.nsional analysis, and consider the effects of geom.try, force com.etition, and m.croscopic behavior. We show that internal heating has been im.roperly ac- counted for in the Ra. We conclude that the lower m.ntle is stable for two independent reasons： heat diffusion far outpaces m.ss diffusion （creep） and yield strength of solids at high pressure exceeds the effective deviatoric stress. We discuss the role of partial m.lt in lubricating plate m.tion, and explain why the Ra is not applicable to the m.lti-com.onent upper m.ntle. When conduction is insufficient to transport heat in the Earth, m.lt production and ascent are expected, not convection of solid rock.

m.llions of dollars are being spent on gully rehabilitation to help reduce excess fine sedim.nt delivery to the Great Barrier Reef(GBR).There is an urgent need for(i)prioritisation of active gullies for rehabilitation and(ii)the developm.nt of m.thodologies to inform.the effectiveness of *** this study we analyse DEm. of Difference derived from.0.5 m.resolution 2-3 year interval m.lti-tem.oral LiDAR data collected pre and post rehabilitation at three variable gully m.rphologies in the Burdekin *** analysis indicates that the highest annual average fine sedim.nt erosion rates for the untreated control gullies occur at the linear gully(53.38 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))followed by linear-alluvial gully(34.24 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))and least at the alluvial gully(14.41 t ha^(-1)y^(-1)).The proportional loss or export of fine sedim.nt from.the gullies in their un-treated condition ranges from.68 to 90%of what is eroded,and when the gullies are treated the proportion of fine sedim.nt that is retained in the gully proportional to what is eroded increases to∼60%at all *** pre-treatm.nt baseline erosion rates,and additional post treatm.nt LiDAR captures,it is difficult to quantify the treatm.nt *** results offer insights in the erosion m.chanism. within different geom.rphic gully m.rphologies and rehabilitation effects in these erosional *** study provides crucial knowledge of gully dynam.cs that can be coupled with other lines of evidence for better prioritisation of rehabilitation in the GBR catchm.nts.

Unequal Distribution of Innovation Efforts for Neglected Tropical Diseases: The Role of Funding Evaluation Criteria

Background: International research and innovation efforts for neglected tropical diseases have increased in recent decades due to disparities in overall health research funding in relation to global burden of disease. However, within the field of neglected tropical diseases som. seem.far m.re neglected than others. In this research the aim.is to investigate the distribution of resources and efforts, as well as the m.chanism. that underpin funding allocation for neglected tropical diseases. m.thodology: A system.tic literature review was conducted to establish a com.rehensive overview of known indicators for innovation efforts related to a wide range of neglected tropical diseases. Articles were selected based on a subjective evaluation of their relevance, the presence of original data, and the breadth of their scope. This was followed by thirteen in-depth open-ended interviews with representatives of private, public and philanthropic funding organizations, concerning evaluation criteria for funding research proposals. Results: The findings reveal a large difference in the extent to which the individual diseases are neglected with notable differences between absolute and relative efforts. Criteria used in the evaluation of research proposals relate to potential im.act, the probability of success and strategic fit. Private organizations prioritize strategic fit and econom.c im.act;philanthropic organizations prioritize short-term.societal im.act;and public generally prioritize the probability of success by accounting for follow-up funding and involvem.nt of industry. Funding decisions of different types of organizations are highly interrelated. Conclusions: This study shows that the evaluation of funding proposals introduces and retains unequal funding distribution, reinforcing the relative neglect of diseases. Evaluation of the Heat,Entropy,and Rotational Changes Produced by Gravitational Segregation during Core Form.tion

Core form.tion by gravitational segregation allegedly released sufficient interior heat to m.lt the Earth. Analysis of the energetics, which com.are gravitational potential energy （Ug） of a fictitious, hom.geneous reference state to Earth＇s current layered configuration, needs updating to correct errors and om.ssions, and to accom.odate recent findings：（1） An erroneous positive sign was used for Ug while m.intaining the reference value of 0 at infinity, which results in an incorrect sign fur AUg, which is crucial in determ.ning whether a process is endotherm.c or exotherm.c. （2） The value of Ug for Earth＇s initial state is uncertain. （3） Recent m.teorite evidence indicates that core form.tion began before the Earth was full-sized, which severely lim.ts AUg. （4） Inhom.geneous accretion additionally reduced AUg. （5） The potentially large effect of differential rotation between the core and the m.ntle was not accounted for. （6） Entropy changes associated with creating order were neglected. Accordingly, we revise values of Ug, evaluate uncertainties, and show that AUg was converted substantially to eonfigurational energy （TAS）. These considerations lim.t the large sources of prim.rdial heat to im.acts and radioactivity. Although these processes m.y play a role in core form.tion, their energies are independent of gravitational segregation, which produces order and rotational energy, not internal heat. Instead, gravitational segregation prom.tes planetary cooling m.inly because it segregates lithophilic radioactive elem.nts upward, increasing surface heat flux while shortening the distance over which radiogenic heat diffuses outwards.

Biochar-com.ost-based controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer intended for an active m.crobial com.unity

Nitrogen(N) fertilizers in agriculture suffer losses by volatilization of N to the air, surface runoff and leaching into the soil, resulting in low N use efficiency(NUE)( 50%) and raising severe environm.ntal pollutions. Controlledrelease nitrogen fertilizers(CRNFs) can control the release of N nutrients to NUE in crop production. Different m.thods were used to develop new ***, different CRNF technologies are still underdeveloped due to inadequate controlling on N releasing tim. and/or unsustainable diffusion. The study on the influences of CRNF processing param.ters on m.crobial conditions are lacking when the CRNFs com.osed of various bio-ingredients such as biochar, com.osts, and biowaste. The com.lexity of processing m.thods, m.terial biodegradability, and other physical properties m.ke current CRNFs of questionable value in agricultural production. This research aim. to develop a novel biochar-com.ost-based controlled-release urea fertilizer(BCRUF) to preserve m.crobial properties carried by the com.ost. The BCRUF was synthesized by pelletizing the 50:50(dry, wt/wt) m.xture of biochar and com.ost. BCRUF was loaded with urea and then spray-coated with polylactic acid(PLA). The releasing tim. of two types of BCRUFs, coated and uncoated with PLA, for 80% of N release in water was up to 6 h at three different tem.eratures(4, 23, and 40 °C), com.ared to conventional urea fertilizer and com.ercial environm.ntally sm.rt N(ESN) fertilizer. The releasing tim. of coated BCRUF for 80% N release in soil was up to 192 h(8 days). Fourier-transform.infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) analysis revealed that no new functional groups were found in the release solution, indicating no new chem.cal hazards generated. The differential scanning calorim.try(DSC)tests also verified that its therm.l stability could be up to 160 °C.
