Objective:Neonates with congenital heart disease(CHD)and perinatal stroke have high mortality and survivors are at risk for poor long-term neurodevelopmental *** aim of this study was to assess the risk factors and outcome of neonates with both CHD and mRI-confirmed perinatal stroke(Study Group)and compare those to the risk factors and outcome of infants matched for CHD without stroke(Control-1)and of infants matched for mRI-confirmed stroke without CHD(Control-2).methods:We conducted a population-based case-control study enrolling 28 term neonates with CHD and mRI-confirmed acute perinatal stroke born between 2007–2017 in the Central-Hungarian *** of the control groups included 56 *** Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II,the Brunet-Lézine test and the Binet Intelligence scales-V were used for neurodevelopmental follow-up at a median age of 61 ***:mortality was highest in the Study Group(25%compared to 5%and 2%,respectively,p=0.001).Adverse neurodevelopmental outcome was prevalent in the Study(53%)and Control-2 Groups(52%,p=0.03).Significantly different parameters among the three groups included Apgar scores,mode of delivery,gestational age at birth,cardiac interventions and twin *** a multivariable regression analysis adjusted for clinically relevant parameters,patients in the Study Group had significantly higher odds for mortality compared to patients in the Control-1 Group(OR:6.595%CI:1.1–39.4).Conclusions:Neonates with perinatal stroke and CHD are at a higher risk for dying compared to neonates with CHD without *** addition,the stroke-associated direct insult to the brain likely plays an important role in the development of neurodevelopmental morbidity in these patients.

On the deterring effect of a butterfly＇s eyespot in juvenile and sub-adult chickens

Circular patterns, or eyespots, are common anti-predator features in a variety of animals. Two defensive functions have been documented： large eyespots may intimidate predators, whereas smaller marginal eyespots may divert attacks. However, a given eyespot potentially serves both functions, possibly depending on the predator＇s size and/or experience. Naive predators are potentially more likely to misdirect their attacks towards eyespots; alternatively, their typically smaller size would make them more intimidated by the same eyespots. Here we test how juvenile and sub-adult naive chickens respond to a single eyespot on a butterfly＇s wing. We presented the birds with dead wall brown butterflies, Lasiommata megera, that had their apical eyespot visible or painted over. We assessed the birds＇ responses＇ by （i） scoring their intimidation reaction, （ii） whether they uttered alarm calls and, （iii） if they attacked the butterfly and where they targeted their attacks. Results show that both age categories received higher intimidation scores when offered a butterfly with a visible eyespot. Juveniles were more intimidated by the butterfly than the sub-adults： they received higher intimidation scores and were more prone to utter alarm calls. moreover, only sub-adults at- tacked and did so by preferentially attacking the butterfly＇s anterior. We demonstrate an intimidating effect of the type of eyespot that has previously been shown only to divert attacks. We suggest that one and the same eyespot may serve two functions relative to different predators; however, further experiments are needed to disentangle the role of predator identity and its link to size, on- togeny and experience [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 749-757, 2015].

Comparison of selected inflammation-based prognostic markers in relapsed or refractory metastatic colorectal cancer patients

AIm: To investigate the impact of systemic inflammationbased prognostic markers on overall survival in relapsed/refractory metastatic colorectal cancer(m CRC) patients. mETHODS: To investigate prognostic markers in m CRC patients,this study was performed with patients who have experienced relapsed/refractory m CRC with standard chemotherapy or were inapplicable to conventional treatment modality because of poor performance status,age,or comorbidity. We reviewed the medical records of 177 m CRC patients managed with Korean medicine(Km) treatment modality using an anticancer agent of Rhus verniciflua Stokes extract from June 2006 to April 2013. The clinicopathologic characteristics,laboratory test,the systemic inflammation markers including the modified Glasgow prognostic score(m GPS),neutrophil lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet lymphocyte ratio(PLR),lymphocyte monocyte ratio(LmR),and prognostic nutritional index(PNI) were analyzed. The overall survival of patients was calculated with the Kaplan-meier method and the statistical significance was compared using with the log-rank test. To compare the impact of systemic inflammation based markers,the hazard ratio(HR) of m GPS,NLR,PLR,LmR,and PNI for overall survival were evaluated with the Cox proportional hazards ***: The majority of m CRC patients had relapsed/refractory to standard chemotherapy; 128 patients(72.3%) had undergone more than second line chemotherapy,and the median time from diagnosis of m CRC to initiation of Km was 9.4 mo. The median overall survival of enrolled patients was 8.3 mo. On univariate analyses,the inflammation markers of higher m GPS(P 300(P = 0.004),LmR ≤ 3.4(P me. Dogs engage in play behavior at every age and the play bow is their most iconic playful ***,the function of this posture is still under ***,we selected the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog(CWD)as a model breed to clarify the function of the play *** analyzed frame-by-frame 118 sessions of 24 subjects and recorded 76 play bow *** found that all the play bows were performed in the visual field of the playmate suggesting that the sender takes into account the attentional state of the receiver when releasing the *** drawing survival curves and using log-rank test we found that play bow was mainly performed during a short pause in an ongoing session and that its performance triggered the playmate’s reaction *** findings show that play bow functions in restoring the partner motivation to ***,by using a sequential analysis and a generalized mixed model,we found no evidence supporting the metacommunicative function of the play *** signal did not necessarily precede a contact offensive behavior(e.g.,play biting and play pushing)and it was not affected by the level of asymmetry of the play *** conclusion,in CWDs play bow can be considered a visual signal useful to maintain the motivation to play in the ***,we suggest that the mismatched number of play bows emitted by the 2 players in a given session can be predictive of their different motivations to play.

Epidemiology of open fractures in sport: One centre's 15-year retrospective study

AIm To describe the epidemiology of sport-related open fractures from one centre's adult patient population over a 15-year period. mETHODS A retrospective review of a prospectively-collected database was performed: The database contained information all sport-related open fractures, sustained from 1995 to 2009 in the Edinburgh, mid and East Lothian *** Over the 15-year period, there were 85 fractures recorded in 84 patients. The annual incidence of open sport-related fractures was 0.01 per 1000 population. The mean age at injury was 29.2 years(range 15-67). There were 70(83%) males and 14 females(17%).The 6 most common sports were soccer(n = 19, 22%), rugby(n = 9, 11%), cycling(n = 8, 9%), hockey(n = 8, 9%); horse riding(n = 6, 7%) and skiing(n = 6, 7%). The five most common anatomical locations were finger phalanges(n = 30, 35%); tibial diaphysis(n = 19, 23%); forearm(n = 12, 14%); ankle(n = 7, 8%) and metacarpals(n = 5, 6%). The mean injury severity score was 7.02. According to the Gustilo-Anderson classification system, 45(53%) fractures were grade 1; 28(33%) fractures were grade 2; 8(9%) fractures were grade 3a; and 4(5%) fractures were grade 3b. Out of the total number of fractures, 7(8%) required plastic surgical intervention as part of management. The types of flaps used were split skin graft(n = 4), fasciocutaneous flaps(n = 2); and adipofascial flap(n = 1). CONCLUSION We analysed the epidemiology of open fractures secondary to sport in one centre over a 15-year period. Soccer and rugby were the most common causative sports while fractures of the finger phalanx and of the tibial diaphysis were the most common sites. Open fractures are uncommon in sport; however, when they are sustained they usually occur on muddy sport fields or forest tracks and therefore must be treated appropriately. It is important that clinicians and sports therapists have knowledge of these injuries, in order to ensure they are managed optimally.

The corrosion activity of amorphous plates of Ca60mg15Zn25alloy was *** biocompatible elements were selected for the alloy *** electrochemical corrosion and immersion tests were carried out in a multi-electrolyte fluid and Ringer's *** corrosion behavior was observed for the samples tested in a multi-electrolyte fluid despite the active dissolution of Ca and mg in Ringer's *** experimental results indicated that reducing concentration of NaCl from 8.6 g/dm3for Ringer's solution to 5.75 g/dm3caused the decrease of the corrosion *** volume of the hydrogen evolved after 480 min in Ringer's solution（40.1 ml/cm2）was higher in comparison with that obtained in a multi-electrolyte fluid（24.4 ml/cm2）.The values of opencircuit potential(EOCP)for the Ca60mg15Zn25glass after 1 h incubation in Ringer's solution and a multielectrolyte fluid were determined to be-1553 and-1536 m V vs.a saturated calomel electrode（SCE）.The electrochemical measurements indicated a shift of the corrosion current density(jcorr)from 1062μA/cm2for the sample tested in Ringer's solution to 788μA/cm2for the specimen immersed in a multi-electrolyte *** corrosion products analysis was conducted by using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）.The corrosion products were identified to be CaCO3,mg（OH）2,CaO,mgO and Zn *** mechanism of corrosion process was proposed and described based on the microscopic *** X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FTIR）also indicated that Ca（OH）2,CaCO3,Zn（OH）2and Ca(Zn（OH）3)2·2H2O mainly formed on the surface of the studied alloy.

Benzene, toluene and xylenes levels in new and used vehicles of the same model

The aim of this work was to determine the level of benzene, toluene, o-xylene and m, p-xylene （BTX） in air samples collected from the cabins of new and used vehicles of the same model. Ten new vehicles were examined in order to check interior emission from materials used to equip the passenger compartment. In order to compare and define the impact of exhaust gases, air samples were also collected from two used cars, at different mileages （up to 20,000 kin）. All vehicles tested were of the same type. Samples were collected onto Carbograph 1TD sorbent, thermally desorbed and examined with the use of gas chromatography with flame ionisation and mass spectrometry detectors. All results obtained were referred to Polish and German requirements for indoor air quality （both in public buildings and in workspace environments）. Average benzene, toluene, o-xylene and m, p-xylene concentrations in new cars were determined at the level of 11.8 μg/m^3, 82.7 μg/m^3, 21.2 μg/m^3 and 89.5 μg/m^3, respectively. In the used cars, BTX concentration increased with increasing vehicle mileage. The most significant increase of BTX concentration was observed above 11,000 km mileage.

Developing a longline/jig sentinel survey program for an area with limited monitoring and fishing efforts

Areas,such as coastal eastern Gulf of maine(GOm),perceived to have low density of target fish species and having high density fixed gear,are often subject to low fishing pressure and not well *** can lead to a shortage of information regarding the fine scale dynamics of groundfish *** surveys are commonly developed for such areas with little monitoring and commercial fishing activity as a cost effective way to collect relevant data for monitoring the dynamics of fish *** this study,we outline an approach that utilizes information from other survey programs and pilot study for designing a survey that satisfies both the wish of fishermen participants to contribute their knowledge and experience in determining groundfish abundance and distribution and the statistical rigor required for stock *** an analysis of spatial and density distribution of groundfish populations based on data from pilot seasons of the sentinel survey and other monitoring programs,we designed a survey that has good spatial and temporal coverage and captures the spatial variability in species composition and size structure of key *** spatially explicit data collected in the program can contribute to a better understanding of groundfish stock status in the eastern *** approach,although developed for the coastal eastern GOm,is also applicable to other areas with similar issues.
