Emerging contaminants have commonly been observed in environmental waters but have not been included in water quality assessments at many locations around the *** evaluate the availability of reclaimed water in Kinmen,Taiwan,this study provides the first survey of the distribution of thirty-three pharmaceuticals and five perfluorinated chemicals in lake waters and water from local wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs).The results showed that the target emerging contaminants in Kinmen lakes were at trace ng/L *** addition,most of the target compounds were present in the Jincheng and Taihu WWTP influents at ng/L concentrations levels,of which 5 compounds(erythromycin-H2O(1340 ng/L),ibuprofen(1763 ng/L),atenolol(1634 ng/L),acetaminophen(2143 ng/L),and caffeine(3113 ng/L))reached mg/L *** overall treatment efficiencies of the Jincheng and Taihu WWTPs with respect to these pharmaceuticals and perfluorinated chemicals were poor;half of the compounds were less than 50%*** compounds(sulfamethoxazole,erythromycin-H2O,clarithromycin,ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin)with risk quotient(RQ)values>1 in the effluent should be further investigated to understand their effects on the aquatic *** and advanced treatment units are found necessary to provide high-quality recycled water and sustainable water resources.

A high-throughput Serum Bactericidal Assay (SBA) was developed to monitor the functional antibody responses to capsular polysaccharide antigens from multiple serotypes of Neisseria meningitidis. This assay measures the ability of an antibody, aided by complement, to mediate killing of bacteria. Functional assays of this type are increasingly used in the quality control arena as potency release tests. Consequently, there has been an enhanced requirement for reproducibility in the performance of this type of assay. Assay validation is, therefore, important to facilitate understanding of the significance of values obtained, and to enable appropriate and informed use of the assay. This study involved the evaluation of the high-throughput serum bactericidal assay including the effects of different dilution and transfer techniques on assay performance. The results presented here demonstrate the repeatability, and the precision and ruggedness of the assay.

目的探讨VERGE蛋白在小鼠大脑中动脉梗死模型(mCAO)中蛋白表达的变化及其机制。方法C57BL/6小鼠30只,随机分为2组:30 min mCAO模型组、90 min mCAO模型组,制备mCAO模型,应用激光多普勒血流仪进行术中脑血流监测,应用Western印迹法观察各组梗死侧及非梗死侧的VERGE、p-JNK2、p-ERK1/2、P-38蛋白表达的变化。结果30 min、90 min mCAO模型组梗死侧VERGE、p-JNK2的蛋白表达明显增高,p-ERK1/2、P-38蛋白表达无变化;两组mCAO模型非梗死侧的VERGE、p-JNK2、p-ERK1/2、P-38蛋白表达均无变化。结论VERGE蛋白表达在小鼠mCAO的早期明显升高可能与JNK2通路有关而与ERK、P38通路无关。

Joint hypermobility syndrome is a condition in which a joint can move effortlessly beyond the normal limit of motion expected for that joint. This syndrome is affected by some factors including gender and tends to be inherited. It may cause some symptoms such as pain in an individual’s synovial joints. The objective of the current study was to compare the energy loss of connective tissues between joints with and without hypermobility. A differential equation model, namely the Kelvin-Voigt model, was used for the energy loss analysis. The results show the difference in energy loss for the tissues attached to joints with and without joint hypermobility. As the stiffness of the connective tissue decreases, the energy loss increases. muscle activity about the ankle was measured via electromyography during simple functional tasks, and the recorded data were used to correlate with the theoretical analysis of the energy loss. The result would shed light on the pathology analysis of the symptoms such as the cause of pain.

We determined the global yield and composition of extracts from vetiver roots cultivated hydroponically. We extracted roots of two varieties collected at different times after planting. The extracts were obtained by supercritical fluid extraction （SFE）; we also estimated manufacturing costs. Constituents were quantified by gas-chromatography/time ionization detection （GC-FID）. Results demonstrated the efficacy of a hydroponic system in producing vctiver with a high root extract content. The largest yield was obtained from roots collected on days 132 and 92 after planting from varieties National （1.41%） and Bourbon （1.28%）, respectively. The major compounds present in the extract were khusimoi, isovalencenol, alpha-vetivone and beta-vetivone. To determine the economic viability of producing these extracts, manufacturing costs were estimated using a simplified methodology. The manufacturing costs were US$ 22.26/kg and US$ 24.26/kg for varieties national and Bourbon, respectively.

AIm: To investigate the effects of different methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(mTHFR) 677C>T gene polymorphism and hyperhomocysteinemia for the development of renal failure and cardiovascular events, which are ***: We challenged the relationship, if any, of mTHFR 677C>T and mTHFR 1298A>C polymorphisms with renal and heart function. The present article is a reappraisal of these concepts, investigating within a larger population, and including a subgroup of dialysis patients, if the two most common mTHFR polymorphisms, C677 T and A1298 C, as homozygous, heterozygous or with a compound heterozygous state, show different association with chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis. mTHFR polymorphism could be a favorable evolutionary factor, i.e., a protective factor for many ominous conditions, like cancer and renal failure. A similar finding was reported in fatty liver disease in which it is suggested that mTHFR polymorphisms could have maintained and maintain their persistence by an heterozygosis advantage mechanism. We studied a total of 630 Italian Caucasian subject aged 54.60 ± 16.35 years, addressing to the increased hazard of hemodialysis, if any, according to the studied mTHFR genetic polymorphisms. RESULTS: A favorable association with normal renal function of mTHFR polymorphisms, and notably of mTHFR C677 T is present independently of the negative effects of left ventricular hypertrophy, increased IntraRenal arterial Resistance and hyperparathyroidism. CONCLUSION: mTHFR gene polymorphisms could have a protective role on renal function as suggested by their lower frequency among our dialysis patients in end-stage renal failure; differently, the association with left ventricular hypertrophy and reduced left ventricular relaxation suggest some type of indirect, or concurrent mechanism.

Epidemiological studies showed an association between menopause, weight gain and risk factors that identify the metabolic syndrome (mS). We evaluated body composition and metabolic risk factors in postmenopausal women addressed to a center for the assessment of nutritional status to lose weight by hypocaloric balanced diet. 161 postmenopausal women were enrolled. mS diagnosis was made applying IDF (International Diabetes Foundation) criteria. After the prescription of hypocaloric diet all subjects were controlled every 2 months. In patients suffering from mS (mS+) at the first visit, diagnosis of mS was reassessed when 10% weight loss was achieved. 70 women were mS+. Years since menopause, low instruction level, obesity and Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT) were each associated with mS. Particularly, BmI ≥ 30 Kg/m2 (OR: 2.61;95% CI, 1.76 - 3.46) and VAT > 6.6 cm (OR: 3.49;95% CI, 2.52 - 4.46) resulted independent risk factors. The 30% of the whole sample dropped out, the reminders significantly reduced weight, waist circumference (Wc) and Fat mass (p 0.01). The 35% of mS+ women achieved the 10% weight loss with significant reduction of VAT, Wc, fasting glucose, tryglicerides, blood pressure and resolution of mS in the 78% of them. The 43.5% of postmenopausal women addressed in one center for the assessment of nutritional status to follow a weight-loss nutritional program had the mS;visceral obesity was the strongest independent risk factor and hypocaloric balanced diet resulted a good strategy to lose weight and treat mS.
