Software Project Effort Estimation Based on Multiple Parametric Models Generated Through Data Clustering

Parametric software effort estimation models usually consists of only a single mathematical relationship. With the advent of software repositories containing data from heterogeneous projects, these types of models suffer from poor adjustment and predictive accuracy. One possible way to alleviate this problem is the use of a set of mathematical equations obtained through dividing of the historical project datasets according to different parameters into subdatasets called partitions. In turn, partitions are divided into clusters that serve as a tool for more accurate models. In this paper, we describe the process, tool and results of such approach through a case study using a publicly available repository, ISBSG. Results suggest the adequacy of the technique as an extension of existing single-expression models without making the estimation process much more complex that uses a single estimation model. Thermo-electro-mechanical microstructural interdependences in conductive thermoplastics

Additive manufacturing has enabled the design of thermoplastic components that provide structural support,electrical conductivity and heat generation modulated by mechanical deformation.The mechanisms and interplays that govern the material response at the microstructural level remain,however,elusive.Here,we develop an experimental method to characterise conductive filaments from a combined mechanical,electrical and thermal perspective.This approach is used to unravel exciting material interplays of conductive polylactic acid.To overcome experimental limitations that prevent a complete microstructural analysis of the problem,we develop a full-field homogenisation framework and implement it for finite elements.The framework accounts for viscoplasticity,electrical and thermal conduction,convection and heat generation via Joule effect,as well as for the interdependences between them.After experimental validation,the framework is applied to virtually optimise fabrication requirements to obtain desired properties in final products,i.e.,stiffer products,filaments with higher conductivities or with better sensing capabilities.

Vasorelaxant activity of extracts obtained from Apium graveolens:Possible source for vasorelaxant molecules isolation with potential antihypertensive effect

Objective:To investigate the vasorelaxant effect of organic extracts from Apium graveolens(A.graveolens)which is a part of a group of plants subjected to pharmacological and phytochemical study with the purpose of offering it as an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive effects.Methods:An ex vivo method was employed to assess the vasorelaxant activity.This consisted of using rat aortic rings with and without endothelium precontracted with norepinephrine.Results:All extracts caused concentration-dependent relaxation in precontracted aortic rings with and without endothelium;the most active extracts were Dichloromethane and Ethyl Acetate extracts from A.graveolens.These results suggested that secondary metabolites responsible for the vasorelaxant activity belong to a group of compounds of medium polarity.Also,our evidence showed that effect induced by dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from A.graveolens is mediated probably by calcium antagonism.Conclusions:A.graveolens represents an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive effects.

Objective: To determine whether fluid hysteroscopic directed biopsies , in pati ents with endometrial cancer upstages the tumor and worsens the prognosis. Study design: Between January 1996 and September 2001, a total of 62 consecutive pati ents with endometrial cancer, treated at our institution, were randomized 3 ∶2 to have or not to have a fluid hysteroscopic biopsy just prior to surgery. A tot al of 38 patients underwent a hysteroscopy after the induction of anesthesia. Al l patients had pelvic washings performed, followed by a hysterectomy, bilateral salpingooforectomy and pelvic +/-para-aortic lymph node dissections. Only sta ges I and II endometrioid type tumors or stage IIIa, secondary to positive pelvi c washings, were included in the study. Eight patients in the hysteroscopy group and four patients in the control group were excluded for various reasons. Patie nts received post-operative radiation therapy depending on the surgical-pathol ogical risk factors. The median follow up was 34 months. Fishers Exact Test wa s performed to compare differences between the hysteroscopic (n=30) and the cont rol (n=20) groups. Results: We found three patients (10%) with positive washing s in the hysteroscopic group compared to one (5%) among the controls (P=0.64), with a statistical power of < 20%. If the differences would persist, we would n eed 588 patients in each arm to obtain a power of 80%, and reach definitive con clusions. The Odds Ratio (OR) of performing a hysteroscopy and upstaging the tum or in this study was: 2.1 95%CI (0.20-21.09). Prognostic variables were compar ed between both groups and no differences were observed. All patients but one (d ead due to intercurrent disease), were alive and with no evidence of disease at the completion of the study. Conclusions: Fluid hysteroscopy and directed biopsi es may have a small risk of upstaging early endometrial cancers, but does not se em to influence prognosis.
