Influence of food availability,plant productivity,and indigenous forest use on ranging behavior of the endangered samango monkey(Cercopithecus albogularis schwarzi),in the Soutpansberg Mountains,South Africa

Understanding the determinants of ranging patterns in species susceptible to habitat fragmentation is fundamental for assessing their long-term adaptability to an increasingly human-dominated *** aim of this study was to determine and compare the influence of ground-based food availability,remotely sensed plant productivity,and indigenous forest use on the ranging patterns of the endangered samango monkey(Cercopithecus albogularis schwarzi).We collected monthly ranging data on two habituated samango monkey groups,from February 2012 to December 2016,from our field site in the Soutpansberg Mountains,South *** used linear mixed models to explore how food availability,plant productivity,and indigenous forest use influenced monthly ranging patterns,while controlling for group size,number of sample days and day *** found that as more areas of high plant productivity(derived from remotely sensed EVI)were incorporated into the ranging area,both total and core monthly ranging areas *** addition,both total ranging area and mean monthly daily path length decreased as more indigenous forest was incorporated into the ranging ***,we found no effect of either ground-based food availability or remotely sensed plant productivity on ranging *** findings demonstrate the behavioral flexibility in samango monkey ranging,as samangos can utilize matrix habitat during periods of low productivity but are ultimately dependent on access to indigenous forest *** addition,we highlight the potential of using remotely sensed areas of high plant productivity to predict ranging patterns in a small ranging,forest-dwelling guenon,over ground-based estimates of food availability.

the effect of adsorbent textural and functional properties on model naphthenic acid adsorption

Naphthenic acids,NAs,are a major contaminant of concern and a focus of much research around remediation of oil sand process affected waters,*** activated carbon adsorbents are an attractive option given their low cost of fabrication and implementation.A deeper evaluation of the effect NA structural differences have on uptake affinity is *** we provide an in-depth exploration of NA adsorption including many more model NA species than have been assessed previously with evaluation of adsorption kinetics and isotherms at the relevant alkaline pH of OSPW using several different carbon adsorbents with pH buffering to simulate the behaviour of real *** for the NA varied considerably regardless of the activated carbon used,ranging from 350 mg/g to near zero highlighting recalcitrant *** equilibrium data was explored to identify structural features of these species and key physiochemical properties that influence *** found that certainNAwill be resistant to adsorptionwhen hydrophobic adsorbents are *** isotherm modelling helped explore interactions occurring at the interface between NA and adsorbent *** identified the importance of NA hydrophobicity for activated carbon *** is also presented that indicates favorable hydrogen bonding between certain NA and surface site hydroxyl groups,demonstrating the importance of adsorbent surface functionality for NA *** research highlights the challenges associated with removing NAs from OSPW through adsorption and also identifies howadsorbent surface chemistry modification can be used to increase the removal efficiency of recalcitrant NA species.

Strigolactones (Sls) are carotenoid-derived plant compounds that stimulate the germination of root-parasitic weeds. Why a host plant should produce such detrimental signals remained unclear until exuded Sls were shown to also encourage symbioses with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Shortly after this discovery, Sls were found to act internally as endogenous phytohormones to regulate numerous traits, most prominently shoot branching, or “tillering” in cereal crops (Gomez-Roldan et al., 2008;Umehara et al., 2008).

the study of microbial hydrocarbons removal is of great importance for the development of future bioremediation *** this study,we evaluated the removal of a gaseous mixture containing toluene,m-xylene,ethylbenzene,cyclohexane,butane,pentane,hexane and heptane in aerated stirred bioreactors inoculated with Rhodococcus erythropolis and operated under non-sterile *** the real-time measurement of hydrocarbons,a novel systematic approachwas implemented using Selected-Ion Flow tubeMass Spectrometry(SIFtMS).the effect of the carbon source(~9.5 ppmv)on(i)the bioreactors’performance(BR1:dosed with only cyclohexane as a single hydrocarbon versus BR2:dosed with a mixture of the 8 hydrocarbons)and(ii)the evolution of microbial communities over time were *** results showed that cyclohexane reached a maximum removal efficiency(RE)of 53%±4%in *** BR2,almost complete removal of toluene,m-xylene and ethylbenzene,being the most water-soluble and easy-to-degrade carbon sources,was *** below 32%were obtained for the remaining *** exposing the microbial consortium to only the five most recalcitrant hydrocarbons,REs between 45%±5%and 98%±1%were *** addition,we observed that airborne microorganisms populated the bioreactors and that the type of carbon source influenced the microbial communities *** abundance of species belonging to the genus Rhodococcus was below 10%in all bioreactors at the end of the *** work provides fundamental insights to understand the complex behavior of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures in bioreactors,along with a systematic approach for the development of SIFt-MS methods.

Experimental Study for Effect of Multi-Site Spark Ignition on Dedicated Hybrid Engine Performance under High Dilution Condition

In this study,a triple spark ignition scheme was first designed on a three-cylinder 1.5-l dedicated hybrid engine(DHE).On this basis,the effect of different ignition modes on engine combustion and emission characteristics was studied,especially under high dilution *** results tested at 2000 r/min and 0.8 MPa BMEP(brake mean effective pressure)show that with highly increased in-cylinder flow intensity,using only passive prechamber(PPC)has a lower lean limit than that with single central spark plug(CSP),thereby leading to slightly higher minimum fuel consumption and nitrogen oxides(NO_(x))*** side spark plugs(SSP)based on PPC can result in improved capability of lean limit extension and engine performance than ***,the improvement level is lower than that with triple spark plugs(tSP).As the excess air ratio λ increases,the advantage of PPC and PPC with SSP in improving the combustion phasing compared with CSP gradually ***,the increasing tendency of their ignition delay and combustion duration is more *** added SSP based on PPC can effectively shorten the ignition delay of leaner mixture,but the combustion duration can be only slightly *** a result,under extremely lean condition,the advantage of PPC and PPC with SSP in terms of combustion characteristics over CSP becomes much *** contrast,the tSP ignition can achieve much shorter ignition delay and combustion duration simultaneously under this *** to the highest available dilution level,the tSP ignition achieves the lowest raw NO_(x)***,it can also reduce the raw carbon monoxide(CO)and hydrocarbons(HC)emissions compared to CSP due to a more thorough combustion of the end gas *** on the excellent performance of tSP,the highest engine brake thermal efficiency(BtE)was further *** results show that with normal RON 92 fuel,the engine finally achieved 43.69% and 45.02% BtE under stochiometric mode with exhaus

Renewable energy-driven bicarbonate conversion to valuable chemicals presents an attractive strategy for mitigating CO_(2)emissions,as bicarbonate can be efficiently generated from the capture of atmospheric CO_(2)using alkaline solutions with reactive *** this work,we present a CO_(2)-mediated bicarbonate conversion to pure formate using a cation exchange membrane-based electrolyzer with a 25 cm^(2)electrode *** electrolysis achieved selectivities exceeding 75%for formate at a total current of 2.5 A,achieving formate concentrations up to 1.2 M and yields as high as 95%over extended *** techno-economic assessment confirmed the economic viability of the process,highlighting the potential for bicarbonate electrolysis as a sustainable method for producing valuable chemicals.

the growth,survival,and mortality of conifer species in response to the hydrothermal regime have received considerable *** is expected that the highest sensitivity of trees to the warming-drying climate will occur mainly at the edges of the species *** focused on the responses to climate change of the drought-resistant larch(larix sibirica)and the moisture-sensitive Siberian pine(Pinus sibirica)along the elevation gradient in the tannu-Ola Ridge,the southern margin where those two species coexist in Siberia by using satellite data(MODIS,landsat,and microwave),the indexes of gross(GPP)and net(NPP)primary productivity,and tree radial growth index(GI).We found that since the warming restart in the 2000s,the area of larch-dominated forests increased by~150%while the area of pine-dominated forests decreased by~10%.the Siberian pine has retreated at low elevations(ts area at higher *** contrast,the area of larch stands increased in both the uphill and downhill ***(Betula spp.)also increased its area at low elevations(about+120%).Since 2001,the forested area increased by~5%.A shrubification,i.e.,an increase in the area of shrubs,was observed at high *** uphill rate of timberline and shrubline migration was about 0.3 m/*** the 2000s,vegetation NPP has increased by 13%.A notable correlation between NPP and the GI of larch and pine was found(r=0.5-0.7).At lower elevations,NPP positively correlated with precipitation and soil moisture,while air temperature and VPD(vapor pressure deficit)increase inhibited *** high elevations,the effects of these variables on productivity *** continuous decline of the Siberian pine forest indicates an inevitable retreat of this species at low elevations and its replacement by larch and birch.
