Hydraulic fracturing is a powerful technology used to stimulate fluid production from reservoirs. The fully 3-D numerical simulation of the hydraulic fracturing process is of great importance to the efficient application of this technology, but is also a great challenge because of the strong nonlinear coupling between the viscous flow of fluid and fracture propagation. By taking advantage of a cohesive zone method to simulate the fracture process, a finite element model based on the existing pore pressure cohesive finite elements has been established to investigate the propagation of a penny-shaped hydraulic fracture in an infinite elastic medium. The effect of cohesive material parameters and fluid viscosity on the hydraulic fracture behaviour has been investigated. Excellent agreement between the finite element results and analytical solutions for the limiting case where the fracture process is dominated by rock fracture toughness demonstrates the ability of the cohesive zone finite element model in simulating the hydraulic fracture growth for this case.

A solution to the linear Boltzmann equation satisfies an energy bound,which reflects a natural fact:The energy of particles in a finite volume is bounded in time by the energy of particles initially occupying the volume augmented by the energy transported into the volume by particles entering the volume over *** this paper,we present boundary conditions(BCs)for the spherical harmonic(p_(N))approximation,which ensure that this fundamental energy bound is satisfied by the p_(N) *** BCs are compatible with the characteristic waves of p_(N) equations and determine the incoming waves ***,energy bound and compatibility,are shown on abstract formulations of p_(N) equations and BCs to isolate the necessary structures and *** BCs are derived from a Marshak type formulation of BC and base on a non-classical even/odd-classification of spherical harmonic functions and a stabilization step,which is similar to the truncation of the series expansion in the p_(N) *** show that summation by parts(SBp)finite differences on staggered grids in space and the method of simultaneous approximation terms(SAT)allows to maintain the energy bound also on the semi-discrete level.

prostate cancer （pCa） is the second most common malignancy among men in the world. Castration-resistant prostate cancer （CRpC） is the lethal form of the disease, which develops upon resistance to first line androgen deprivation therapy （ADT）. Emerging evidence demonstrates a key role for the pI3K-AKT-mTOR signaling axis in the development and maintenance of CRpC. This pathway, which is deregulated in the majority of advanced pCas, serves as a critical nexus for the integration of growth signals with downstream cellular processes such as protein synthesis, proliferation, survival, metabolism and differentiation, thus providing mechanisms for cancer cells to overcome the stress associated with androgen deprivation. Furthermore, preclinical studies have elucidated a direct connection between the pI3K-AKT-mTOR and androgen receptor （AR） signaling axes, revealing a dynamic interplay between these pathways during the development of ADT resistance. Thus, there is a clear rationale for the continued clinical development of a number of novel inhibitors of the pI3K pathway, which offer the potential of blocking CRpC growth and survival. In this review, we will explore the relevance of the pI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway in pCa progression and castration resistance in order to inform the clinical development of specific pathway inhibitors in advanced pCa. In addition, we will highlight current deficiencies in our clinical knowledge, most notably the need for biomarkers that can accurately predict for response to pI3K pathway inhibitors.

There are many reasons why it is important that we find ways to conserve, and better utilize natural enemies of invertebrate crop pests. Currently, measures of natural enemy impact are rarely incorporated into studies that purport to examine pest control. Most studies examine pest and natural enemy presence and/or abundance and then qualitatively infer impact. While this provides useful data to address a range of ecological questions, a measure of impact is critical for guiding pest management decision-making. Often some very simple techniques can be used to obtain an estimate of natural enemy impact. We present examples of field-based studies that have used cages, barriers to restrict natural enemy or prey movement, direct observation of natural enemy attack, and sentinel prey items to estimate mortality. The measure of natural enemy impact used in each study needs to be tailored to the needs of farmers and the specific pest problems they face. For example, the magnitude of mortality attributed to natural enemies may be less important than the timing and consistency of that mortality between seasons. Tailoring impact assessments will lead to research outcomes that do not simply provide general information about how to conserve natural enemies, but how to use these natural enemies as an integral part of decision-making.
