Lead-phase and red-stripe color morphs of red-backed salamanders Plethodon cinereus differ in hematological stress indices:A consequence of differential predation pressure?

Throughout the animal kingdom there are species that have two or more phenotypic forms or ‘morphs＇, and many of these are amphibians. In North America, the red-backed salamander Plethodon cinereus can have either a red dorsal stripe or no dorsal stripe （lead-phase form）, and evidence to date indicates the lead-phase form incurs a greater number of attacks from predators. In a recent collection of 51 P cinereus, blood smears of both color morphs （35 red-stripe, 16 lead-phase） were examined to obtain numbers of circulating leukocytes （via light microscopy）, which can be used to indirectly estimate levels of stress hormones in vertebrates via a ‘hematological stress index＇, which is the ratio between the number of two leukocyte types （neutrophils and lymphocytes）. Our results showed that lead-phase salamanders tended to have greater numbers of circulating neutrophils and lower numbers of circulating lymphocytes than red-stripe morphs, leading to higher average neutrophil-lymphocyte ratios in lead-phase individuals. Since the salamanders were held （refrigerated） for 7 days before sampling, we cannot be certain if this effect is a stress reaction to the captivity or the normal level for this morph. However comparison with two sets of related salamanders that were captured and sampled immediately indicates the red-stripe salamanders were either not stressed from the captivity at all, or their white blood cell distributions had returned to normal after 7 days of captivity. Taken together, our results indicate that lead-phase forms of P. cinereus have higher stress levels than the red-stripe forms, which may be a consequence of their higher exposure to, and/or attacks from, predators. They may also indicate that the lead-phase form is less-suited to captivity than the red-stripe form of this species.

Pelage color of red bats Lasiurus borealis varies with body size:An image analysis of museum specimens

Mammalian pelage color can vary among individuals of many species, although this intraspecific variation is oftenoverlooked by researchers, perhaps because of its sometimes subtle nature and difficulty in assessing it quantitatively. Thus, suchvariation is rarely studied in mammals, and this is especially true within the order Chiroptera, where there has been very little empiricalresearch. We examined museum specimens of red bats (Lasiurus borealis, family Vespertilionidae) from Georgia, USA, todetermine the extent of sexual dimorphism in pelage color and to explore possible associations between body size and pelagecolor. We photographed 54 specimens under uniform lighting, and used an image analysis program to measure pelage hue on theuropatagium region, which is fully furred in members of the genus Lasiurus. Statistical analyses of pelage hue scores showedmales had significantly redder pelage than females when considered alone, but when examined together with effects of body sizeand collection year, sex was not significant, and collection year and body size were. More recent specimens tended to be less redthan older specimens, which might indicate a wearing of the buffy tips of hairs from older specimens, and smaller bats of bothsexes tended to be more red. These interesting findings are encouraging and we suggest that future explorations into intraspecificvariation in pelage color of bats using this or similar approaches are warranted to clarify the significance of the patterns. Thisstudy also demonstrated that care must be taken in analyses of mammalian pelage color from older museum skins, or at least thatresearchers must take into account the age of the specimens .

Do black-furred animals compensate for high solar absorption with smaller hairs？ A test with a polymorphic squirrel species

In polymorphic mammalian species that display multiple color forms, those with dark, or melanic pelage would be prone to overheating, especially if they live in warm climates, because their fur absorbs solar energy at a higher rate. However, experimental studies indicate that certain physical properties of fur of dark individuals appear to prevent, or minimize heat stress, although it is not clear what properties do so. Here, we tested the possibility that black-furred individuals simply have shorter or thinner hair fibers, which would create a lighter （in terms of weight） coat or one that allows greater air flow for evaporative coo- ling. We examined museum specimens of eastern fox squirrels Sciurus niger, a species native to the United States and one that displays brown, grey or all-black pelage color, and used image analysis procedures to quantify hairs from the dorsal surface and tail. From examination of 43 specimens （19 brown, 9 black and 15 grey）, and 1,720 hairs, we found no significant difference in hair lengths across color morphs, but significant differences in hair fiber widths. Black squirrels had thinner body hairs than other forms （7% thinner）, but thicker tail hairs （9% thicker） than the others. Given that the dorsal surface would be directly exposed to solar radiation, we interpret this to be an adaptation to prevent heat stress during the day. The thicker tail hairs may be an adapta- tion for nighttime thermoregulation, since squirrels sleep with their tails wrapped around their bodies. These results add to a growing literature body of the functional significance of mammalian pelage [Current Zoology 57 （6）： 731-736, 2011].

Incidence and outcomes of intracerebral haemorrhage with mechanical compression hydrocephalus

Introduction Intracerebral haemorrhage(ICH)within deep structures adjacent to the third ventricle is associated with worse outcomes when compared with lobar ICH due to the critical role of deep nuclei in normal neurological *** evidence suggests another contributing factor to poor outcome is obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid outflow by clot burden causing mechanical compression of the third *** authors reviewed the incidence and outcomes of mechanical compression ICH in order to identify this high-risk group which may potentially benefit from minimally invasive *** Patients with spontaneous,non-traumatic,supratentorial ICH were identified retrospectively over a 30-month *** imaging was reviewed to assess location of the ICH,volume of the ICH,presence of hydrocephalus requiring external ventricular drain(EVD)placement,and time to clearing of the third *** was then categorised as due to‘primarily intraventricular haemorrhage(IVH)’,‘primarily mechanical compression’or‘mixed’.Functional outcomes at discharge were assessed using the modified Rankin Score(mRS).Results 287 patients met inclusion criteria,of which 39(13.5%)patients developed hydrocephalus that required *** patients had significantly higher mRS at discharge(p≤0.001)when compared with the non-EVD *** location was associated with lower odds of poor outcome compared with thalamic location(OR 0.107-0.560).Mechanical compression hydrocephalus was associated with poor outcome when compared with the primary IVH hydrocephalus subgroup(p=0.037)as well as longer time to clearing of the third ventricle(p=0.006).Conclusions Mechanical obstruction requiring EVD occurs in approximately(21/287)7.3%of all patients with spontaneous supratentorial *** is unknown if the worse morbidity in these subjects is purely related to damage to deep structures surrounding the third ventricle or if secondary damage from hydrocephalus could be mitigated with tar

Comparative evaluation of urolithiasis management options in patients with horseshoe kidney:A systematic review and meta-analysis

Marine reserves are an important management tool for conserving local biodiversity and protecting fragile ecosystems such as seagrass that provide significant ecological functions and services to people and the marine *** humans placing ever-growing pressure on seagrass habitats,marine reserves also provide an important reference from which changes to seagrass and their ecological assemblages may be *** eight years of protection of seagrass beds(Posidonia australis)in no-take marine reserves(Sanctuary Zones)within the Jervis Bay Marine Park(New South Wales,Australia;zoned in 2002),we aimed to assess what changes may have occurred and assess continuing change through time in fish assemblages within these seagrass *** baited remote underwater videos(BRUVs),we sampled seagrass fish assemblages at three locations in no-take zones and five locations in fished zones three times from 2010 to ***,we observed a total of 2615 individuals from 40 fish species drawn from 24 *** detected no differences in total fish abundance,diversity,or assemblage composition between management zones,although we observed a significant increase in Haletta semifasciata,a locally targeted fish species,in no-take marine reserves compared with fished *** assemblages in seagrass varied greatly amongst times and *** species varied in relative abundance greatly over months and years,whilst others had consistently greater relative abundances at specific *** discuss the potential utility of marine reserves covering seagrass habitats and the value of baseline data from which future changes to seagrass fish populations may be measured.

Fabrication-tolerant Fourier transform spectrometer on silicon with broad bandwidth and high resolution

We report an advanced Fourier transform spectrometer(FTS)on silicon with significant improvement compared with our previous demonstration in[***.9,665(2018)].We retrieve a broadband spectrum(7 THz around 193 THz)with 0.11 THz or sub nm resolution,more than 3 times higher than previously demonstrated[***.9,665(2018)].Moreover,it effectively solves the issue of fabrication variation in waveguide width,which is a common issue in silicon *** structure is a balanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer with 10 cm long serpentine ***-continuous optical path difference between the two arms is induced by changing the effective index of one arm using an integrated *** serpentine arms utilize wide multi-mode waveguides at the straight sections to reduce propagation loss and narrow single-mode waveguides at the bending sections to keep the footprint compact and avoid modal *** reduction of propagation loss leads to higher spectral efficiency,larger dynamic range,and better signal-to-noise ***,for the first time to our knowledge,we perform a thorough systematic analysis on how the fabrication variation on the waveguide widths can affect its ***,we demonstrate that using wide waveguides efficiently leads to a fabrication-tolerant *** work could further pave the way towards a mature silicon-based FTS operating with both broad bandwidth(over 60 nm)and high resolution suitable for integration with various mobile platforms.
