Meningococcal disease is the acute infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis, which has humans as the only natural host. The disease is widespread around the globe and is known for its epidemical potential and high rates of lethality and morbidity. The highest number of cases of the disease is registered in the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In Brazil, it is endemic with occasional outbreaks, epidemics and sporadic cases occurring throughout the year, especially in the winter. The major epidemics of the disease occurred in Brazil in the 70's caused by serogroups A and C. Serogroups B, C and Y represent the majority of cases in Europe, the Americas and Australia. However, there has been a growing increase in serogroup W in some areas. The pathogen transmission happens for respiratory route(droplets) and clinically can lead to meningitis and sepsis(meningococcemia). The treatment is made with antimicrobial and supportive care. For successful prevention, we have some measures like vaccination, chemoprophylaxis and droplets' precautions. In this review, we have described and clarify clinical features of the disease caused by N. meningitidis regarding its relevance for healthcare professionals.

Antioxidant Migration Studies in Chitosan Films Incorporated with Plant Extracts

Punch‑excised explants of bovine mammary gland to model early immune response to infection

Background Mammary gland(MG)infections(mastitis)are frequent diseases of dairy cows that affect milk quality,animal welfare and farming *** infections are commonly associated with the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus *** in vitro models have been used to investigate the early response of the MG to bacteria,but the role of the teat in mastitis pathogenesis has received less *** this study,we used punch-excised teat tissue as an ex vivo model to study the immune mechanisms that arise early during infection when bacteria have entered the *** Cytotoxicity and microscopic analyses showed that bovine teat sinus explants have their morphology and viability preserved after 24 h of culture and respond to ex vivo stimulation with TLR-agonists and *** and *** trigger stronger inflammatory response in teat when compared to LTA and ***,leading to a higher produc-tion of IL-6 and IL-8,as well as to an up-regulation of proinflammatory *** also demonstrated that our ex vivo model can be applied to frozen-stored *** In compliance with the 3Rs principle(replacement,reduction and refinement)in animal experimenta-tion,ex vivo explant analyses proved to be a simple and affordable approach to study MG immune response to *** model,which better reproduces organ complexity than epithelial cell cultures or tissue slices,lends itself particularly well to studying the early phases of the MG immune response to infection.

Ground peach pits: alternative substrate component for seedling production

The exploitation of agro-industrial wastes is a strategy to add value to seedling production and reduce environmental *** production chain for processed peaches generates,approximately,21,000 tons of fruit worldwide,and the pits are used mainly to generate *** objective of the study was to investigate the use of different proportions of ground peach pits(GPP)as a substrate component for seedling growth of Eucalyptus dunnii in the nursery and *** proportions of GPP mixed with either commercial substrate(CS)or with brown peat(BP)were *** physical and chemical properties of the substrates,the morphological and physiological attributes of the seedlings and their correlation with substrate properties were *** GPP increased the density,aeration space and pH and reduced total porosity,liquid retention and electric conductivity of the *** use of this component resulted in hormesis,a biphasic dose–response model in which low levels of exposure to this component stimulated biological performance of plants and high levels of exposure inhibited *** improved seedling growth in the nursery and adequate post-planting development of ***,GPP with CS is recommended at 20%of the total substrate and with BP between 15 and 30%.

Performance and Ruminal Characteristics of Beef Cattle Fed Four Different Hybrids Sorghum Silages

This study was conducted to evaluate the intake, total and partial digestibility of nutrient, ruminal pH and ammonia concentration, microbial protein synthesis and performance in crossbred Holstein × Zebu cattle fed four different hybrids sorghum silages （1F305, XBF60329, BRS610, Volumax）. In Experiment 1, four rumen and abomasum fistulated steers, 400 ± 80 kg, distributed in a 4 × 4 Latin Square, were used. In Experiment 2, 28 crossbred Holstein × Zebu steers, 350 ± 50 kg, distributed in a randomized block design with four treatments and seven replicates, were used. In Experiment 1, it was observed that nutrient intake, as well as total, ruminal and intestinal digestibility of nutrient, were not affected （P 〉 0.05） by diets, except for total apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber （NDFap）, which was lower for the BRS610 hybrid. There was lower NDFap ingestion in animals that received a diet containing silage from the BRS610 hybrid, however, the lowest intake non-fibrous carbohydrates （NFC） was observed for the diet containing silage from the Volumax hybrid. In Experiment 2, nutrient intake were not affected by the diets （P 〉 0.05）, whereas, NDFap intake was lesser for hybrid BRS610. It was found that daily weight gain and feed conversion were not affected by different silages diets. Therefore, it may be concluded that the diets used were nutritionally equivalent, as they promoted similar animal performance without affecting ruminal parameters.

Using optical coherence tomography images to evaluate fungal growth in reline resins

As changes in hard or soft oral tissues normally have a microbiological component,it is important to develop diagnostic techniques that support clinical evaluation,without destroying microbio-logical *** optical coherence tomography(OCT)represents an alternative to analyze tissues and microorganisms without the need for *** imaging technique could be defined as a fast,real-time,in situ,and non-destructive ***,this study proposed the use of the OCT to visualize biofilm by Candida albicans in reline resins for removable *** reline resins(Silagum-Comfort,Coe Comfort,and Soft-Confort),with distinct char-acteristics related to wa ter sorption and fungal inhibition were used.A total of 30 samples(10 for each resin group)were subjected to OCT scanning before and 96 h after inoculation with Candida albicans(URM 6547).The biofilm analysis was carried out through a 2D optical Callisto SD-OCT(930 nm)operated in the spectral ***,the images were preprocessed using a3×3 Gaussian filter to remove the noise,and then Otsu binarization,allowing segmentation and pixel *** layer's biofilm formed was clearly defined and,indeed,its visualization is modified by water sorption of each ***-Comfort and *** showed some similarities in the scattering of light between the clean and inoculated samples,in which,the latter samples presented higher values of light signal ***-Comfort samples were the only ones that showed no di®erences between the clean or inoculated ***,the results of this study suggest that OCT is a viable technique to visualize the biolm in reline *** in the literature are still scarcely using the OCT technique to visualize biolm in reline resins,further studies are *** should not contain any references or displayed equations.

Spatial Analysis of Affected Areas by Extreme Hydrological Events in Rio de Janeiro (The Host City for the 2016 Olympic Games)—Brazil

The most frequent types of disasters in Brazil are associated with extreme hydrological events. Adding to this situation, in Brazil, there are the extreme sociospatial discrepancies that are historically constructed. They leave marks in space, making specific areas, for political interest or not, more vulnerable to the different mentioned processes. To this extent, the public management should plan actions and, also, it may act in a more holistic way adding new trends, such as, the use of geotechnologies that are applied to environmental management in the realm of urban planning. From a case study in the city of Rio de Janeiro, this paper aims to contribute and draw attention to such issues. It may reach its target through pointing and spatially analyzing which areas are in the most critical situation related to the occurrence of extreme hydrological events. To achieve this goal, it was proposed a methodology to inventory the occurrence of inundation/flooding for a certain period, in this case 2001-2008. Besides, the methodology could systematize data and integrate them with other important issues for supporting the process of identification and analysis of the most critical areas. Historical aspects of occupation and the most vulnerable socio-environmental aspects were raised, too, in order to validate the highlighted areas. This integration was enabled concerning the support of geoprocessing techniques. The results of this integration subsidized the mapping and spatial analysis of the affected areas in the city and the criticality in relation to the extreme hydrological events. Finally, it was possible to observe that the identification of the most critical affected areas does not mean the exhaustion of the subject. The location of these areas is directly linked to the sample that was used as the basis for analyses. In 2019,an oil spill in Brazil,of unknown origin,severely impacted coastal environs with the worst environmental disaster ever recorded in any tropical coastal region globally severely damaging South Pirangi Reef area in the state of Rio Grande do Norte(RN).Here we discuss acute and chronic impacts including chemical contamination and economic consequences all over the world and show some evidence of the oil spill in this biodiverse ***,the lapse between the moment of the disastei;and the action to manage it,was hampered by a political agenda coinciding with local and global tragedies that redirected public *** almost 2 years have passed still without the offending party identification or culpability;and poor communities may continue to absorb its deleterious impacts for decades without consideration or *** disaster occurred during the Brazilian government's current issues involving extensive environmental mismanagement,resulting in a slow response from an inept *** is with urgent necessity to spotlight this tragedy in this unique and sensitive reef habitat experiencing the ongoing damaging effects that include socio-economic losses not yet addressed.
