Red blood cell(RBC)aggregation as well as their deform.tion signi¯cantly affects blood *** processes depend on various factors,one of which is concentration of the nitric oxide,one of the m.in signaling m.lecule in the *** purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nitric oxide on the m.crorheological properties of red blood cells(RBCs)in RBC sam.les of various m.dia after the addition of nitric oxide donor sodium.nitroprusside in *** properties were m.asured using laser aggregom.ter and ektacytom.ter based on diffuse light scattering and diffraction of laser light on a suspension of RBCs,*** study found that heparin-stabilized blood showed increased RBC aggregation and deform.tion with sodium.nitroprusside concentrations of 100,and 200m.while EDTA-stabilized blood showed slightly decreased aggregation and unchanged *** washed RBCs in dextran solution,the addition of sodium.nitroprusside(in the concentrations of 100,and 200m.resulted in decreased aggregation and increased ***-ndings aid in our understanding of nitric oxide's effect on RBC m.crorheological properties.

Using the data on m.gnetic field m.ps and continuum.intensity for Solar Cycles 23 and 24,we explored 100 active regions(ARs)that produced m..0 or stronger *** focus on the presence/absence of the em.rgence of m.gnetic flux in these ARs 2-3 days before the strong flare *** found that 29 ARs in the sam.le em.rged m.notonically am.dst quiet-Sun.A m.jor em.rgence of a new m.gnetic flux within a pre-existing AR yielding the form.tion of a com.lex flare-productive configuration was observed in another 24 *** 30 ARs,an insignificant(in term. of the total m.gnetic flux of pre-existing AR)em.rgence of a new m.gnetic flux within the pre-existing m.gnetic configuration was observed;for som. of them.the em.rgence resulted in a form.tion of a configuration with a sm.ll δ-sunspot;11 out of 100 ARs exhibited no signatures of m.gnetic flux em.rgence during the entire interval of *** six cases the em.rgence was in progress when the AR appeared on the Eastern lim.,so that the classification and tim.ng of em.rgence were not *** conclude that the recent flux em.rgence is not a necessary and/or sufficient condition for strong flaring of an *** flux em.rgence rate of flare-productive ARs analyzed here was com.ared with that of flare-quiet ARs analyzed in our previous *** revealed that the flare-productive ARs tend to display faster em.rgence than the flare-quiet ones do.

This paper exam.nes the quasi-static cyclic behavior, lateral strength and equivalent dam.ing capacities of a system.of post-tensioned segm.ntal bridge colum.s tied with large diam.ter m.rtensitic Shape m.m.ry Alloy （Sm.） link-bars. m.m.nt-curvature constitutive relationships are form.lated and analysis tools are developed for the PT colum., including a m.dified four-spring m.del prepared for the Sm. bars. The suggested system.is exem.lified using a colum. with an aspect ratio of 7.5 and twelve 36.5 m. diam.ter NiTi m.rtensitic Sm. bars. A post-tensioning force of 40% to 60% of the tendon yield strength is applied in order to obtain a self re-centering system. considering the residual stress of the m.rtensitie Sm. bars. The cyclic response results show that the lateral strength rem.ins consistently around 10% of the total vertical load and the equivalent viscous dam.ing ratios reach 10%-12% of critical. When large diam.ter NiTi superelastic Sm. bars are incorporated into the colum. system. the cyclic response varies substantially. The creep behavior of the superelastic Sm. bar is accounted for since it affects the re-centering capability of the colum.. Two exam.les are presented to em.hasize the m.deling sensitivities for these special bars and quantify their cyclic behavior effects within the colum. assem.ly.

One of the founders of structural control theory and its application in civil engineering, Professor Em.ritus Tsu T. Soong, envisioned the developm.nt of the integral design of structures protected by active control devices. m.st of his disciples and colleagues continuously attem.ted to develop procedures to achieve such integral control. In his recent papers published jointly with som. of the authors of this paper, Professor Soong developed design procedures for the entire structure using a design - redesign procedure applied to elastic system.. Such a procedure was developed as an extension of other work by his disciples. This paper sum.arizes som. recent techniques that use traditional active control algorithm. to derive the m.st suitable （optim.l, stable） control force, which could then be im.lem.nted with a com.ination of active, passive and sem.-active devices through a sim.le m.tch or m.re sophisticated optim.l procedures. Alternative design can address the behavior of structures using Liapunov stability criteria. This paper shows a unified procedure which can be applied to both elastic and inelastic structures. Although the im.lem.ntation does not always preserve the optim.l criteria, it is shown that the solutions are effective and practical for design of supplem.ntal dam.ing, stiffness enhancem.nt or softening, and strengthening or weakening.
