Interactional behaviors of the parasitic beetle Paussus favieri with its ant host Pheidole pallidula:the mimetic role of the acoustical signals

The social parasitic beetle Puussus favieri(Coleoptera,Carabidae,Paussini)performs different types of stridulations,which sclectively mimic those emitted by dif-ferent ant castes of its host Pheidole pallidula(Hymenoptera,Formicidae,Myrmicinae).However,the significance of this acoustical mimicry for the success of the parasitic strat-egy and the behaviors elicited in the host ants by stridulations was *** reared Paussus favieri in Pheidole pallidula colonies and filmed their interacting *** analyzed in slow motion the behavior of ants near a stridulating *** analyzed sep-arately trains of pulse(Pa+Pb,produced by repeated rubbings)and single pulse(Pc,produced by a single rubbing)of stridulations,clearly recognizable from the shaking up and down of the beetle hind *** associated them with differcent ant *** full repertoire of sounds produced by P:favieri elicited benevolent responses both in workers and *** found that different signals elicit different(sometimes multiplc)bchaviors in ants,with different frequency in the two ant ***,Pc(alone or in conjunction with other types of pulses)appears to be the type of acoustic signal mostly responsible for all recorded *** results indicate that the acoustic channel plays a pivotal role in the host-parasite *** that a parasite uses the acoustical channel so intensively,and in such a complicated way to trigger ant bchaviors,indicates that acoustic signals may be more important in ant societies than commonly recognized.

Ciinical value and cost-effectiveness of minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy

Minimally invasive pancreatic resection(MIPR)has gained popularity in the last decade and it is currently widely applied with selected indications in highly specialized centres *** pancreatectomy(DP),which lacks of a technical demanding and complex reconstruction phase,is the most suitable pancreatic resection for a minimal invasive approach and is therefore the most performed *** non-randomized studies and meta-analyses suggested that a minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy(MIDP)could improve the short-term postoperative outcomes by reducing the intraoperative blood loss and the postoperative morbidity when compared to open distal pancreatectomy(ODP)(1).MIDP seems also to promote an earlier recovery and a reduction in the length of postoperative stays when compared to ODP without affecting the oncologic ***,the diffusion of MIDP is increasing and a minimally invasive approach is generally recognized as a suitable approach to benign,borderline malignant lesions and to *** value of MIDP for the surgical treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)is still under evaluation despite its feasibility and safety in this setting have been demonstrated and similar long-term oncological outcomes were reported by several single and multicentre series(2).The recent published diPLOMA study,a European retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study on minimally invasive versus open DP for PDAC,raised some concerns in terms of oncological adequacy of MIDP(3).

Local Adjuvants in Surgical Management of Bone Lesions

One of the most common methods for surgical treatment of bone metastasis is curettage. Local adjuvants are used to improve the effect of curettage in local cancer surgery and they may exerted their effects either chemically either physically;in orthopaedic oncology the most common are phenol, liquid nitrogen, laser, cement and argon beam coagulation. The purpose of this article is to review the main characteristics of the most common chemical and physical agents used in bone oncology, emphasizing the toxic effects of some of them, especially phenol and liquid nitrogen.

Absolute erythrocytosis,due to an increased production of red blood cells,becomes manifest with hemoglobin(Hb)levels above 165 or 160 g/L or with a hematocrit(HCT)above 51%and 48%in males and females,respectively.1 A minority of patients have polycythemia vera(PV);acquired secondary erythrocytosis frequently occurs due to appropriate or inappropriate erythropoietin(EPO)excess,while congenital secondary erythrocytosis may derive from genetic defects causing tissue *** erythrocytosis occurs in patients with genetic mutations of the oxygen-sensing pathway(VHL,PHD2,_HIF-1-alpha)or the erythropoietin receptor(EPOR)genes.2 Recently,HFE gene variants have been described in sporadic erythrocytoses.3 In a high proportion(about 70%)of patients with erythrocytosis,a specific etiology remains elusive despite extensive testing,and the diagnosis of idiopathic erythrocytosis(IE)is ruled out.

Mucosal adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in the human colonic mucosa: A proof-of-concept study

AIM To investigate the adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacil us rhamnosus GG (LGG) in the colonic mucosa of healthy and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, both in vivo and ex vivo in an organ culture *** For the ex vivo experiment, a total of 98 patients (68 UC patients and 30 normal subjects) were included. Endoscopic biopsies were collected and incubated with and without LGG or LGG-conditioned media to evaluate the mucosal adhesion and anti-inflammatory effects [reduction of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin (IL)-17 expression] of the bacteria, and extraction of DNA and RNA for quantification by real-time (RT)-PCR occurred after the incubation. A dose-response study was performed by incubating biopsies at "regular", double and 5 times higher doses of LGG. For the in vivo experiment, a total of 42 patients (20 UC patients and 22 normal controls) were included. Biopsies were taken from the colons of normal subjects who consumed a commercial formulation of LGG for 7 d prior to the colonoscopy,and the adhesion of the bacteria to the colonic mucosa was evaluated by RT-PCR and compared with that of control biopsies from patients who did not consume the formulation. LGG adhesion and TNFα and IL-17 expression were compared between UC patients who consumed a regular or double dose of LGG supplementation prior to *** In the ex vivo experiment, LGG showed consistent adhesion to the distal and proximal colon in normal subjects and UC patients, with a trend towards higher concentrations in the distal colon, and in UC patients, adhesion was similar in biopsies with active and quiescent inflammation. In addition, bioptic samples from UC patients incubated with LGG conditioned media (CM) showed reduced expression of TNFα and IL-17 compared with the corresponding expression in controls (P < 0.05). Ten-year experience with penile prosthetic surgery for the treatment of erectile dysfunction:outcomes of a tertiary referral center and predictors of early prosthetic infection

We aimed to evaluate ten-year outcomes of penile prosthesis(PP)implantation for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and to assess predictors of early prosthetic infection(EPI).We identified 549 men who underwent 576 PP placements between 2008 and *** and multivariate analyses were used to identify potential predictors of *** EPI predictive nomogram was ***-five(6.1%)cases of EPI were recorded with an explant rate of 3.1%.In terms of satisfaction,82.0%of the patients defined themselves as“satisfied,”while partner’s satisfaction was 88.3%.diabetes(P=0.012),longer operative time(P=0.032),and reinterventions(P=0.048)were associated with EPI risk,while postoperative ciprofloxacin was inversely associated with EPI(P=0.014).Rifampin/gentamicin-coated 3-piece inflatable PP(r/g-c 3IPP)showed a higher EPI risk(P=0.019).Multivariate analyses showed a two-fold higher risk of EPI in diabetic patients,redo surgeries,or when a r/g-c 3IPP was used(all Pdiabetes,longer operative time,and secondary surgeries were the risk factors for *** ciprofloxacin was associated with a reduced risk of EPI,while r/g-c 3IPP had higher EPI rates without an increased risk of PP *** further validation,the proposed nomogram could be a useful tool for the preoperative counseling of PP implantation.
