We studied the process of offspring production in queenless colonies of Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus, and particularly evaluated the ovary development of workers as a function of their age. For this, subcolonies were set up and evaluated at different periods of isolation from the queen （2, 4 and 6 months）, besides individually labeled age groups. The subcolonies were assessed according to offspring production and ovaries containing oocytes or not. The evaluations showed worker oviposition and development of males originating from worker-laid eggs. At 2 months＇ absence of the queen, eggs and larvae were found, with eggs in a higher proportion than larvae. After 4 months, the proportion of eggs had reduced while larvae had increased, and a pupa was found in one subcolony. At 6 months, besides a higher share of larvae, one pupa and one adult male were found. Dissection of workers revealed ovaries containing oocytes during the periods of evaluation. Only a group of medium-sized and large workers, 23.3%, 20.9% and 37.5% of the population from each period assessed in queenless subcolonies respectively, presented developed oocytes in the ovary. The same was observed in colonies with a queen, with 17.6%, 19.6% and 7.8% of the group of dissected workers from each time period, respectively. With respect to worker age, we observed by dissection of the ovary, that the greatest percentage of individuals with ovarioles containing oocytes occurred at 45 days （6 weeks） up to 90 days （12 weeks）. These results probably are associated with the workers reproduction and the laying of trophic and reproductive eggs in colonies with and without a queen; these eggs have distinct functions in each situation.

This paper describes a facile method of preparing cubic Au nanoframes with open structures via the galvanic replacement reaction between Ag nanocubes and AuCl_(2)^(-).A mechanistic study of the reaction revealed that the formation of Au nanoframes relies on the diffusion of both Au and Ag *** effect of the edge length and ridge thickness of the nanoframes on the localized surface plasmon resonance peak was explored by a combination of discrete dipole approximation calculations and single nanoparticle *** their hollow and open structures,the Au nanoframes represent a novel class of substrates for applications including surface plasmonics and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Interaction of Acaena elongata *** Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi under Phosphorus Limitation Conditions in a Temperate Forest

The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of Acaena elongata colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)to different phosphorus(P)concentrations,as a measure of AMF ***,is a species from soils where P availability is limited,such as temperate *** research questions were:1)How do different P concentrations affect the AMF association in Acaena elongata,and 2)How does the AMF association influence ***’s growth under different P concentrations?***’s growth,P content in plant tissue,AMF colonization and dependency were measured under four P concentrations:control(0 g P kg^(-1)),low(0.05 g P kg^(-1)),intermediate(0.2 g P kg^(-1))and high(2 g P kg^(-1))in different harvests.A complete randomized block design was ***’s growth was higher under-AMF in intermediate and high P concentrations,and the lowest growth corresponded to+AMF in the low and intermediate P *** observed a negative effect on the root biomass under+AMF in intermediate P concentration,while the P concentration had a positive effect on the leaf area *** AMF colonization in *** decreased in the highest P concentration and it was favored under intermediate P concentration;while the low and the high concentrations generated a cost-benefit *** results suggest that the performance of some plant species in soils with low P availability may not be favored by their association with AMF,but a synergy between AMF and intermediate P concentrations might drive ***’s growth.

Pulmonary In Situ Adenocarcinoma with Mosaic Paving Pattern

CONTEXT: Adenocarcinoma already comprises half the cases of lung cancer. Its insidious clinical evolution contributes to the fact that, in absolute numbers, lung tumor is the cancer with the highest mortality in the world. When still in situ, the adenocarcinoma is even quieter, making its typical presentation on the computerized tomography of an irregular semisolid nodule smaller than 3.0 cm. It is often diagnosed in a finding of examination in an asymptomatic patient. The prevalence of in situ adenocarcinoma (ISA) is less than 5% of pulmonary malignancies and its radiological presentation with a diffuse mosaic paving pattern is even more unusual, mimicking other conditions more frequent to this finding. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 44-year-old male patient with a history of chronic smoking admitted to the emergency room at a referral hospital in S?o Paulo on 12/16/2016 with a complaint of progressive dyspnea associated with dry cough for 3 months, intermittent fever and weight loss of 8 kg in 2 months. A chest X-ray and computed tomography showed discrete focal points of peribroncovascular consolidation, predominantly central, areas with frosted glass attenuation associated with smooth thickening of the interlobular septa, sometimes interspersed with areas of preserved parenchyma, giving an aspect of “crazing paving” with diffuse distribution by the pulmonary parenchyma. The patient underwent a biopsy with the anatomicopathological diagnosis of primary Adenocarcinoma in situ of the lung. CONCLUSION: We emphasize that the “crazing paving” of adenocarcinoma in situ pulmonary should be considered and known by the radiologist, because although isolated it is a rare condition, its early distrust in cases of atypical evolution of the most common injuries can avoid a diagnosis in phases more advanced and higher mortality.

Metabolic Syndrome and Perioperative Complications during Scheduled Surgeries with Spinal Anesthesia

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a constellation of factors associated with increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and Diabetes Mellitus. despite of the many studies related to MS, little is known about its impact on scenarios such as surgical anesthesia. Objective: To examine the correlation between demographic and metabolic variables with the occurrence of perioperative complications in patients with MS undergoing scheduled surgeries using a spinal anesthesia technique in the surgery department at the University Clinic San Juan de Dios in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Methods: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional, single-center study of 150 subjects with MS and 150 control subjects. Perioperative complications, socio-demographic, hemodynamic and respiratory variables were registered. Groups were compared using t test, Fisher’s exact test or Chi-square, as appropriate. We applied a logistic multiple regression model, adjusted by backward stepwise at 0.25 and forward at 0.05, to find possible incompatible associations. p value dered significant. Results: There were significant differences between groups in age, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification, frequency of diseases associated to MS and perioperative complications. There were no cases of mortality among patients. There was statistically significant difference between the two groups for intraoperative hypotension and hypertension with p values of developing complications in the perioperative period of patients scheduled for surgeries using the subarachnoid anesthesia technique. Water Use in Sugar and Ethanol Industry in the State of Sao Paulo(Southeast Brazil)

Brazil is the largest producer of ethanol from sugarcane in the world. While the ethanol industry is economically important to Brazil for several reasons, it also has a significant impact on the environment. Here we analyze the water consumptive use in the transformation of the feedstock (sugarcane) into ethanol and the impact of industrial byproduct effluents on water resources of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Our estimates indicated that in the 2007-2008 harvest, 700 million m3 was withdrawn mainly from rivers and streams by 140 mills, and of this total 440 million m3 was consumed which yielded a water use of approximately 1.53 m3 ·water·tonˉ1 sugarcane or approximately 18 L·water·L-ˉ1 ethanol. At the same time, a total of 120 million m3 of vinasse by-product was produced in the state, equivalent to an organic load of approximately 3 billion kg·BOD during the harvest season or approximately 8 million kg·BOD·dˉ1. Although the water used by sugarcane mills has decreased in recent decades, it is still possible to further decrease the amount of water used by ethanol production. This would decrease the pressure on 1st order streams of the state from which most water is withdrawn. In addition, the enormous volume of vinasse production must be reduced because it exerts constant pressure on aquatic ecosystems, soil and groundwater due to the constant increase in the potassium (K) concentration in areas where it is used as a fertilizer.

Adsorption Study of Acid Red 114 and Basic Blue 3 on Sunflower Stalk

The aim of this work was to evaluate the sunflower stalk (SS) as an adsorbent in the removal of red acid 114 (AR 114) and basic blue 3 (BB 3) in aqueous solutions, without any physicochemical treatment, where temperature and concentration were the studied variables. The research was developed by using the batch processing mode;the contact time was one hour, with constant agitation of 200 rpm and pH of 7000 ± 0.050, using a central composite design. The adsorbent was characterized through BET, SEM, acid sites and basic sites, charging point, and infrared. The results indicated that the sunflower stalk was a viable and economical alternative for the removal of water that had been contaminated by dyes, showing a better performance for the AR 114 dye, reaching a 71.96% of removal with respect to the initial load. In addition, the EPI Web software was used to model the environmental performance of colorants.
