INTRODUCTION Biological polymorphism is a striking phenomenon in nature where more than one morph of a trait has evolved within a single population(Galeotti et al.2003;Kilner 2006).Polymorphism can evolve and be maintained because each morph possesses fitness that reduces the frequency of one morph increasing the fitness of other morphs,and causes the evolution of all morphs by frequency-dependent selection(Majerus 1998;Cook et al.1999).

This paper considers the problem of supply-demand imbalances in Mobility-on-Demand(MoD)*** imbalances occur due to uneven stochastic travel demand and can be mitigated by proactively rebalancing empty vehicles to areas where the demand is *** achieve this,we propose a method that takes into account uncertainties of predicted travel demand while minimizing pick-up time and rebalance mileage for autonomous MoD *** precisely,first travel demand is predicted using Gaussian Process Regression(GPR)which provides uncertainty bounds on the *** then formulate a stochastic model predictive control(MPC)for the autonomous ride-hailing service and integrate the demand predictions with uncertainty *** order to guarantee constraint satisfaction in the optimization under estimated stochastic demand prediction,we employ a probabilistic constraining method with user-defined confidence interval,using Chance Constrained MPC(CCMPC).The benefits of the proposed method are ***,travel demand uncertainty prediction from data can naturally be embedded into the MoD optimization framework,allowing us to keep the imbalance at each station below a certain threshold with a user-defined ***,CCMPC can be relaxed into a Mixed-Integer-Linear-Program(MILP)and the MILP can be solved as a corresponding Linear-Program,which always admits an integral *** transportation simulations show that by tuning the confidence bound on the chance constraint,close to optimal oracle performance can be achieved,with a median customer wait time reduction of 4%compared to using only the mean prediction of the GPR.

Processing and visualizing large scale volumetric and geometric datasets is mission critical in an increasing number of applications in academic research as well as in commercial enterprise. Often the datasets are, or can be processed to become, *** this paper, we present Vox Link, a novel approach to render sparse volume data in a memory-efficient manner enabling interactive rendering on common, offthe-shelf graphics hardware. Our approach utilizes current GPU architectures for voxelizing, storing, and visualizing such datasets. It is based on the idea of perpixel linked lists(pp LL), an A-buffer implementation for order-independent transparency rendering. The method supports voxelization and rendering of dense semi-transparent geometry, sparse volume data, and implicit surface representations with a unified data structure. The proposed data structure also enables efficient simulation of global lighting effects such as reflection, refraction, and shadow ray evaluation.

Human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) have been reported to completely lack of DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) which is composed of Ku protein and the catalytic subunit DNA-PKcs, needed for nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) of DNA double-strand breaks. Promyelocytic HL-60 cells express a variant form of Ku resulting in enhanced radiation sensitivity. This raises the question if low efficiency of NHEJ, instrumental for the cellular repair of oxidative damage, is a normal characteristic of myeloid differentiation. Here we confirmed the complete lack of DNA-PK in PMN protein extracts, and the expression of the truncated Ku86 variant form in HL-60. However, this degradation of DNA-PK was shown to be due to a DNA-PK-degrading protease in PMN and HL-60. In addition, by using a protease-resistant whole cell assay, both Ku86 and DNA-PKcs could be demonstrated in PMN, suggesting the previously reported absence in PMN of DNA-PK to be an artefact. Background: Brain size is associated with morphological evolution and behavioral flexibility because animals with large brain size tend to utilize new resources and colonize novel environments more ***, animals with larger brain size should possess larger distribution *** size is strongly positively correlated with head size in birds, but also with prey size and vocalizations, because individuals with large heads eat large food items and produce high frequency ***: To test if there exists an association between head morphology and bite performance, we compared head size and bite force in two sympatric sister species of parrotbills, Ashy-throated Parrotbill(Paradoxornis alphonsianus) and Vinous-throated Parrotbill(***), which both originated from the Himalayan area, but differ significantly in their distribution ***: In Guizhou, southwestern China, the Ashy-throated Parrotbill with a restricted distribution range had smaller heads whilst the Vinous-throated Parrotbill with a large distribution range had larger ***, there were no differences in head size between Ashy-throated Parrotbills and allopatric populations of Vinous-throated Parrotbills(Jiangxi and Hebei).Furthermore, the tendency of variation in bite force was opposite to that in head size with populations with larger head size having weaker bite ***: We showed that there are no differences in head size between the Ashy-throated Parrotbill and allopatric populations of Vinous-throated Parrotbill, which provides evidence for the hypothesis that differences in head size in the Guizhou populations of two sister species are probably the result of local adaptation rather than *** study has implications for avian dispersal and adaption related to head size such as diet ecology and vocalizations.

Background: Intentional winter bird feeding in gardens is one of the most common interactions between birds and humans. Because feeding may have both desired effects(provisioning of nutritious food for under-nourished birds) and undesired effects(favouritism of competitively superior species, transmission of disease), management of supplementary sites should be optimized from an ecological and conservation perspective. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to experimentally test winter food preferences of birds, with underlying potential influence of habitat(rural vs. urban) on realised food preferences ***: We conducted an experimental analysis of food preferences of wintering birds by provided bird-feeders in urban and rural environments across Poland. Data were collected twice during winter 2013–2014 across Poland, in total with 80 experimental ***: Sunflower seeds were the most preferred food supplement both in urban and rural habitats, significantly more exploited than any other food simultaneously available in feeders(animal fat, millet seed and dry fruits of rowanberry). However, no significant differences were recorded between urban and rural habitats in use of ***: The degree of use of a particular type of food at bird-feeders depended on the overall use of food in a bird-feeder—consumption of each of the four types of food was significantly positively correlated with that of the others, and it was positively correlated with the number of birds observed at the feeders.

Efficient excitation of surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)remains one of the most challenging issues in areas of plasmonics related to information communication *** particular,combining high SPP excitation efficiency and acceptance of any polarization of incident light appeared to be impossible to attain due to the polarized nature of *** we demonstrate plasmonic couplers that represent arrays of gap SPP resonators producing upon reflection two orthogonal phase gradients in respective linear polarizations of incident *** couplers are thereby capable of efficiently converting incident radiation with arbitrary polarization into SPPs that propagate in orthogonal directions dictated by the phase *** couplers operate at telecom wavelengths and feature the coupling efficiency of,25%for either of two linear polarizations of incident radiation and directivity of SPP excitation exceeding *** further demonstrate that an individual wavelength-sized unit cell,representing a meta-scatterer,can also be used for efficient and polarization sensitive SPP excitation in compact plasmonics circuits.

Overview of the New OMAH Technique for Scaling OMA Mode Shapes

Methods for scaling mode shapes determined by operational modal analysis(OMA)have been extensively investigated in the last years.A recent addition to the range of methods for scaling OMA mode shapes is the so-called OMAH technique,which is based on exciting the structure by harmonic forces applied by an *** applying harmonic forces in at least one degree-of-freedom(DOF),and measuring the response in at least one response DOF,while using at least as many frequencies as the number of mode shapes to be scaled,the mode shape scaling(modal mass)of all modes of interest may be *** previous publications on the method the authors have proven that the technique is easy and robust to apply to both small scale and large scale ***,it has been shown that the technique is capable of scaling highly coupled modes by using an extended multiple reference *** present paper summarizes the theory of the OMAH method and gives recommendations of how to implement the method for best *** is pointed out,as has been shown in previous papers,that the accuracy of the mode scaling is increased by using more than one response DOF,and by selecting DOFs with high mode shape *** determine the harmonic force and responses,it is recommended to use the three-parameter sine fit *** is shown that by using this method,the measurement time can be kept short by using high sampling frequency and bandpass filtering whereas spectrum based methods require long measurement *** means that even for structures with low natural frequencies,the extra measurement time for scaling the mode shapes can be kept relatively short.
