In this paper, a random clique network model to mimic the large clustering coefficient and the modular structure that exist in many real complex networks, such as social networks, artificial networks, and protein interaction networks, is introduced by combining the random selection rule of the ErdSs and Rényi （ER） model and the concept of cliques. We find that random clique networks having a small average degree differ from the ER network in that they have a large clustering coefficient and a power law clustering spectrum, while networks having a high average degree have similar properties as the ER model. In addition, we find that the relation between the clustering coefficient and the average degree shows a non-monotonic behavior and that the degree distributions can be fit by multiple Poisson curves; we explain the origin of such novel behaviors and degree distributions.

AIM: To summarize our single-center experience with liver transplantation(LT) for biliary atresia(BA).METHODS: From October 2006 to December 2012, 188 children with BA were analyzed retrospectively. The stage?Ⅰ?group(from October 2006 to December 2010) comprised the first 74 patients, and the stage Ⅱ group(from January 2011 to December 2012) comprised the remaining 114 patients. Finally, 123 liver transplants were performed in 122(64.9%) patients, whereas 66 patients did not undergo LT due to denial by their parents or lack of suitable liver grafts. The selection of graft types depended on the patients' clinical status and whether a suitable living donor was available. The characteristics of patients in stages?Ⅰ?and Ⅱ were described, and the surgical outcomes of LT recipients were compared between the two stages. The KaplanMeier method was used to estimate the cumulative patient and graft survival rates, and the equality of survival distributions was evaluated using the log-rank ***: The 188 children consisted of 102 boysand 86 girls. Their ages ranged from 3 to 144 mo with a median of 8 mo. One hundred and fifteen(61.2%) patients were born in rural areas. Comparing stage?Ⅰ?and stage Ⅱ patients, the proportion of patients referred by pediatricians(43.2% vs 71.1%, respectively; P < 0.001) and the proportion of patients who previously received a Kasai procedure(KP)(32.4% vs 44.7%, respectively; P = 0.092) obviously increased, and significantly more parents were willing to treat their children with LT(73% vs 86%, respectively; P = 0.027). Grafts from living donors(102/122, 83.6%) were the most commonly used graft type. Surgical complications(16/25, 64.0%) were the main reason for posttransplant mortality. Among the living donor liver transplantation recipients(n = 102), the incidence of surgical complications was significantly reduced(34.1% vs 15.5%, respectively; P = 0.029) and survival rates of patients and grafts were greatly improved(81.8% vs 89.7%, respec

Octenyl succinic anhydride （OSA） modified early Indica rice starch was prepared in aqueous slurry systems using response surface methodology. The paste properties of the OSA starch were also investigated. Results indicated that the suitable parameters for the preparation of OSA starch from early Indica rice starch were as follows： reaction period 4 h, reaction temperature 33.4℃, pH of reaction system 8.4, concentration of starch slurry 36.8% （in proportion to water, w/w）, amount of OSA 3% （in proportion to starch, w/w）. The degree of substitution was 0.0188 and the reaction efficiency was 81.0%. The results of paste properties showed that with increased OSA modification, the starch derivatives had higher paste clarity, decreased retrogradation and better freeze-thaw stability.

Background The optimal timing to start continuous renal replacement therapy （CRRT） for acute kidney injury （AKI） patients has not been accurately established. The recently proposed risk, injury, failure, loss, end-stage kidney disease （RIFLE） criteria for diagnosis and classification of AKI may provide a method for clinicians to decide the ＂optimal timing＂ for starting CRRT under uniform guidelines. The present study aimed：（1） to analyze the correlation between RIFLE stage at the start of CRRT and 90-day survival rate after CRRT start, （2） to further investigate the correlation of RIFLE stage with the malignant kidney outcome in the 90-day survivors, and （3） to determine the influence of the timing of CRRT defined by RIFLE classification on the 90-day survival and malignant kidney outcome in 90-day survivors.Methods A retrospective cohort analysis was performed on the data of 106 critically ill patients with AKI, treated with CRRT during a 6-year period in a university affiliated surgical intensive care unit （SICU）. Information such as sex, age, RIFLE stage, sepsis, sepsis-related organ failure assessment （SOFA） score, number of organ failures before CRRT, CRRT time during SICU, survival, and kidney outcome conditions at 90 days after CRRT start was collected. According to their baseline severity of AKI at the start of CRRT, the patients were assigned to three groups according to the increasing severity of RIFLE stages： RIFLE-R （risk of renal dysfunction, R）, RIFLE-I （injury to the kidney, I） and RIFLE-F （failure of kidney function, F） using RIFLE criteria. The malignant kidney outcome was classified as RIFLE-L （loss of kidney function L） or RIFLE-E （end-stage kidney disease, E） using RIFLE criteria.
