Diabetes is an age-related disease,most of which is type 2 diabetes,and islet β cell dysfunction and insulin resistance are the main mechanisms of type 2 diabetes.Recent studies have revealed that autophagy plays an important role in maintaining the structure and func-tion of islet beta cells and inhibiting insulin resistance and apoptosis induced by oxidative stress.In this review,we discussed the positive and negative effects of autophagy and its dysfunction on type 2 diabetes mellitus,which is the so-called double-edged sword,analysed its possible mechanism,and identifed possible research hot spots.

Quartz crystallinity index(QCI)was used to reflect the crystallisation of silica in the Late Ordovician Wufeng(WF)and Early Silurian Longmaxi(LM)Formation shale,as well as the airborne volcanic ash-derived silica in the Lucaogou Formation tuffaceous shale,to distinguish the two types of silica.The silica in different graptolite biozones exhibited different crystallisation.The WF2–3,LM1–4 graptolite biozones showed obviously lower QCI values than the LM5–9 graptolite biozones and the Lucaogou Formation samples.The graptolite organisms played the role of adsorption,fixation,and precipitation in silicon accumulation and enrichment in stratum.The biogenic origin caused the poorest quartz crystallisation in WF2–3 and LM1–4 graptolite biozones samples.The airborne volcanic ash-derived silica in the Lucaogou Formation tuffaceous shale exhibited relatively poor quartz crystallisation because of weaker diagenesis intensity.Generally,although the WF2–3 and LM1–4 graptolite biozones underwent strong diagenesis and contained a small amount of detrital quartz,the silica still exhibited lower QCI values than the airborne volcanic ash-derived silica in the Lucaogou Formation tuffaceous shale.The biogenic silica crystallisation was much poorer than that of the airborne volcanic ash-derived silica.QCI is an effective quantitative index to demonstrate the biogenic silica in the organic-rich and silica-rich shale.

Although lithium metal is considered a promising anode for advanced Li-S and Li-air batteries,the uncontrolled dendrite growth and infinite volume change impede its practical application.Herein,we report an ideal framework composed of carbonized bacterial cellulose(CBC)nanofibers,which shows intrinsic lithiophilicity to molten lithium without any lithiophilic surface modification.The wetting behavior of molten lithium can be significantly improved because its surface functional groups provide thermodynamical driving force,and the high surface roughness derived from nanocracks leads to rapid infusion in kinetics.The hybrid anode exhibits long cycle life up to 2000 h and excellent deep stripping-platting capacity up to 20 mAh·cm^(-2).When the anode is assembled with LiFePO_(4) cathode,the full cell delivers a good cycling stability up to 700 cycles.This is attributed to the intrinsic lithiophilic scaffold,which can not only lower the nucleation barrier of Li and provide uniform nucleation sites for stable Li stripping/plating,but also offer interspace to accommodate volume fluctuation of lithium during long cycling.This work provides a new manner to achieve a series of intrinsic lithiophilic carbon skeletons based on the large family of biomass materials and organic materials.

Effect of Huangshukuihua(Flos Abelmoschi Manihot) on diabetic nephropathy:a Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of Huangshukuihua(Flos Abelmoschi Manihot) on diabetic nephropathy(DN).METHODS: Articles were retrieved from Pub Med,EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Chinese Evidence-Based Medicine Database, and Wanfang Database. Two reviewers independently reviewed the article. Only randomized controlled trials were included and 27 were identified involving 2239 patients(1143 in the treatment group and 1096 in the control group).RESULTS: Huangshukuihua(Flos Abelmoschi Manihot) had a significant effect on renal function by improving blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine,reducing urine protein(24-h urine protein, and urinary albumin excretion rate), and improving serum albumin level, compared with the control group.CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that, although the bioactive ingredients and mechanism underlying renal protection are unknown, the role of Huangshukuihua(Flos Abelmoschi Manihot) in the treatment of DN deserves further investigation.

Genetic association studies have implicated that cartilage intermediate layer protein 2 (CILP-2) confers the risk susceptibility for type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, it is still unknown whether CILP-2 is involved in the regulation of glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance (IR). In the current study, we initially observed that CILP-2 as a secreted protein was detected in both conditioned medium and lysates of cells transfected with an overexpressed vector. We then found that circulating CILP-2 levels had a progressive increase from normal to impaired glucose tolerance (a pre-diabetic status) and then to diabetes, which was correlated positively with waist-to-hip ratio, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose, 2-h blood glucose after glucose overload, HbA1c, fasting insulin, 2-h plasma insulin after glucose overload, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance but negatively with HDL-C. CILP-2 expression was increased in the liver and muscle but decreased in adipose tissues of obese mice or T2DM patients. Furthermore, we demonstrated that CILP-2 circulating levels were affected by OGTT and Exenatide. CILP-2 overexpression resulted in impaired glucose tolerance and hepatic IR in vivo and increased PEPCK expression whereas suppressed phosphorylation of insulin receptor and Akt kinase in vitro. Based on these findings, we have identified a direct interaction between CILP-2 and PEPCK and suggested that CILP-2 plays an important role in the regulation of hepatic glucose production.

Micro-nano optomechanical accelerometers are widely used in automobile,aerospace,and other industrial applications.Here,we fabricate mechanical sensing components based on an electrically pumped GaN light-emitting diode(LED)with a beam structure.The relationship between the blueshift of the electroluminescence(EL)spectra and the deformation of the GaN beam structure based on the quantum-confined Stark effect(QCSE)of the InGaN quantum well(QW)structure is studied by introducing an extra mass block.Under the equivalent acceleration condition,in addition to the elastic deformation of GaN-LED,a direct relationship exists between the LED’s spectral shift and the acceleration’s magnitude.The extra mass block(gravitational force:7.55×10^(-11)N)induced blueshift of the EL spectra is obtained and shows driven current dependency.A polymer sphere(PS;gravitational force:3.427×10^(-12)N)is placed at the center of the beam GaN-LED,and a blueshift of 0.061 nm is observed in the EL spectrum under the injection current of 0.5 mA.The maximum sensitivity of the acceleration is measured to be 0.02 m∕s^(2),and the maximum measurable acceleration is calculated to be 1.8×10^(6)m∕s^(2).It indicates the simultaneous realization of high sensitivity and a broad acceleration measurement range.This work is significant for several applications,including light force measurement and inertial navigation systems with high integration ability.

Maturity Assessment of the Lower Cambrian and Sinian Shales Using Multiple Technical Approaches

The Lower Cambrian Niutitang and Sinian Doushantuo shales are the most important and widespread source rocks and target layers in South China. Reliable data of the thermal maturity of organic matter(OM) is widely used to assess hydrocarbon generation and is a key property used in determining the viability and hydrocarbon potential of these new shales. Nevertheless, traditional thermal maturity indicators are no longer suited to the vitrinite-lack marine shales. This study aims to combine high throughput Raman and infrared spectroscopy analysis to confirm and validate the thermal maturity in comparison with the bitumen reflectance(R_(b)). Raman parameters such as the differences between the positions of the two bands(V_(G)–V_(D)) are strong parameters for calculating the thermal maturity in a large vitrinite reflectance(R_(o)) ranging from 1.60% to 3.80%. The infrared spectroscopy analysis indicates that the aromatic C=C bands and CH_(2)/CH_(3) aliphatic groups both are closely correlated with thermal maturity. The calculated R_(o) results from Raman and infrared spectroscopy are in strong coincidence with the R_(b). The relationships between R_(b) and pore volumes/surface areas(calculated from N_(2) adsorption) indicate that the sample with R_(b) of 3.40% has the lowest pore volumes and surface areas. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy(FIB-SEM) observations of OM pores indicate that R_(o) of approximately 3.60% may be an upper limit for OM porosity development. Obviously, kerogen Raman and infrared spectroscopy can indicate methods for reducing the risk in assessing maturity with practical, low-cost accurate results. Exploration of shale gas in the high maturity(>3.40%–3.60%) region carries huge risks.
