Syringoceles of Cowper’s ducts and glands in adult men

Cowper’s syringoceles are uncommon,usually described in children and most commonly limited to the *** describe more complex variants in an adult population affecting with varying degrees of severity,the glands themselves,and the complications they may lead *** hundred consecutive urethrograms of patients with unreconstructed strictures were ***-six patients(mean age:41.1 years)with Cowper’s syringoceles who were managed between 2009 and 2016 were subsequently ***,radiological appearance,treatment(when indicated),and outcomes were *** 100 urethrograms in patients with strictures,33.0%demonstrated filling of Cowper’s ducts or glands,occurring predominantly in patients with bulbar *** 1 of 26 patients with non-bulbar strictures had a visible duct/*** 26 symptomatic patients,15 presented with poor *** four patients,a grossly dilated Cowper’s duct obstructed the *** the remaining 11 patients,a bulbar stricture caused the symptoms and the syringocele was identified *** patients presented with perineal *** six of them,fluoroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)revealed complex multicystic lesions within the bulbourethral *** patients developed perineoscrotal *** the 11 patients with strictures,the syringocele was no longer visible after *** three of four patients with urethral obstruction secondary to a dilated Cowper’s duct,this resolved after transperineal excision(n=2)and endoscopic deroofing(n=1).Five of six patients with complex syringoceles involving Cowper’s glands were excised surgically with symptomatic relief in *** conclusion,Cowper’s syringocele in adults is more common than previously thought and may cause lower urinary tract symptoms or be associated with serious complications which usually require surgical treatment.

Bioengineered scaffolds are crucial components in artificial tissue *** general,these scaffolds provide inert three-dimensional(3D)surfaces supporting cell ***,some scaffolds can affect the phenotype of cultured cells,especially,adherent stromal cells,such as *** we report on unique properties of 3D fibroin/gelatin materials,which may rapidly induce expression of adhesion molecules,such as ICAM-1 and VCAM-1,in cultured primary murine embryonic fibroblasts(MEFs).In contrast,two-dimensional(2D)fibroin/gelatin films did not show significant effects on gene expression profiles in fibroblasts as compared to 3D culture ***,TNF expression was induced in MEFs cultured in 3D fibroin/gelatin scaffolds,while genetic or pharmacological TNF ablation resulted in diminished ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 expression by these *** selective MAPK inhibitors,we uncovered critical contribution of JNK to 3D-induced upregulation of these adhesion ***,we observed ICAM-1/VCAM-1-dependent adhesion of lymphocytes to fibroblasts cultured in 3D fibroin/gelatin scaffolds,but not on 2D fibroin/gelatin films,suggesting functional reprogramming in stromal cells,when exposed to 3D ***,we observed significant infiltration of lymphocytes into 3D fibroin/gelatin,but not into collagen scaffolds in vivo upon subcapsular kidney implantation in *** our data highlight the important features of fibroin/gelatin scaffolds,when they are produced as 3D sponges rather than 2D films,which should be considered when using these materials for tissue engineering.

The use of demersal trawling discards as a food source for two scavenging seabird species:a case study of an eastern Mediterranean oligotrophic marine ecosystem

Background: The banning of fisheries discards by imposing an obligation to land unwanted catch constitutes a key point of the Common Fishery Policy reform proposed by the European Commission. The effect of such a ban on discards on top marine predators such as seabirds is largely unknown, especially in oligotrophic systems of the Medi?terranean. The current study investigates the presence of scavenging seabirds around fishing trawlers as well as the exploitation of discards produced by bottom trawlers in the eastern Ionian ***: On?board observations were randomly conducted in May and December 2014, in order to record the presence and use of fishery discards by two common seabird species, namely, Scopoli's Shearwater(Calonectris diomedea) and the Yellow?legged Gull(Larus michahellis).Results: A total of 3400 seabirds were counted during May of which 2190 individuals were Scopoli's Shearwaters and 1210 were Yellow?legged Gulls. The latter species was the only scavenger observed during winter and in total, 768 individuals were counted. Differences in species abundance in the study area are related to breeding phenology and migratory movements. The number of seabirds attending bottom trawler operations during morning and afternoon hours showed no significant differences for both seabird species. Both scavenging seabirds extensively exploited fishery discards, which were mainly demersal fish, and consumed 70–80% of the total fishery discards biomass; how?ever, they appeared to avoid poisonous species and/or large?sized fish. Yellow?legged Gulls displayed kleptoparasitic behaviour on Scopoli's Shearwater during feeding experiments. Over-expression of the cytochrome P450 CYP6CM1 gene has been associated with imidacloprid resistance in a number of Q and B biotype Bemisia tabaci laboratory strains from distinct geographical origins worldwide. We recently demonstrated that the Q biotype version of the CYP6CM 1 protein （CYP6CMlvQ） is capable of metabolizing imida- cloprid. Here, we show that the levels of BtCYP6CMlvQ were also elevated in laboratory- resistant strains and field-derived populations, with variable imidacloprid resistance levels, collected in Crete. High levels of CYP6CMlvQ transcripts were also determined in survivors of a heterogeneous field population, after exposure to discriminating imidacloprid dosage. Using peptide antibody-based detection assays, we demonstrated that in line with transcriptional data, the CYP6CMlvQ protein levels were higher in imidacloprid-resistant insects, which further implicates the gene as the causal factor of resistance. Finally, assess- ment of the cross-metabolism potential of CYP6CMlvQ against additional neonicotinoid molecules used for B. tabaci control revealed that clothianidin and thiacloprid, but not acetamiprid or thiamethoxam, are metabolized by the recombinant enzyme in vitro.

Recurring heavy rainfall resulting in degraded-upgraded phases in soil microbial networks that are reflected insoil functioning

Biological soil crusts(BSCs)are an important multi-trophic component of arid ecosystems in the Mediterranean *** a mesocosm experiment,the authors investigated how the network of interactions among the members of the soil microbial communities in four types of soil sample responded when soils were exposed to two simulated extreme rain *** four types of soil samples were:covered by Cladonia rangiformis and previously hydrated(+BSC+H),covered by *** and dried(+BSC-H),uncovered and hydrated(-BSC+H),uncovered and dried(-BSC-H).Network analysis was based on the co-occurrence patterns of microbes;microbes were assessed by the phospholipid fatty acids *** authors further explored the relations between networks’metrics and soil functions denoted by enzymatic activity and soil chemical *** networks exhibited Small world properties,moderate values of clustering coefficient and eigen centrality,indicating the lack of hub *** networks in-BSC-H soils appeared coherent during the pre-rain phases and they became modular after rains,while those in+BSC-H soils kept their connectivity till the second rain but this then *** network metrics that were indicative of cohesive networks tended to be related to enzyme activity while those that characterized the loose networks were related to Ca,K,Mg,NH_(4)^(+) and organic *** all mesocosms except for+BSC-H,networks’fragmentation after the second heavy rain was milder than after the first one,supporting the idea of community *** response of microbial networks to heavy rains was characterized by the tendency to exhibit degradation-reconstruction *** network collapse in the crusted only mesocosms showed that the communities beneath crusts in arid areas were extremely vulnerable to recurring heavy rain events.

Anomalous moire pattern of graphene investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy： Evidence of graphene growth on oxidized Cu（111）

The growth of graphene on oriented （111） copper films has been achieved by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition. The structural properties of as-produced graphene have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Anomalous moir6 superstructures composed of well-defined linear periodic modulations have been observed. We report here on comprehensive and detailed studies of these particular moir6 patterns present in the graphene topography revealing that, in certain conditions, the growth can occur on the oxygen-induced reconstructed copper surface and not directly on the oriented （111） copper film as expected.

According to the classification presented by Lehmann BD(2016),triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC)is a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors with four specific subtypes:basal-like(subtype 1 and subtype 2),mesenchymal,and luminal androgen receptor(LAR)*** basal-like subtypes of carcinomas predominate in this group,accounting for up to 80%of all *** the significantly lower proportions of mesenchymal and LAR variants in the group of breast carcinomas with a TNBC profile,such tumors are characterized by aggressive biological *** this end,the LAR subtype is of particular interest,since the literature on such tumors presents different and even contradictory data concerning the disease course and *** review is devoted to the analysis of the relevant literature,reflecting the main results of studies on the molecular properties and clinical features of the disease course of LAR-type TNBC carcinomas.
