As forests in neotropical regions,particularly in developing countries,are devastated,interventions to restore biodiversity and its ecological functions are *** producers have thus been encouraged to grow trees for wood production as an economic *** objective of this study was to quantify the increment of wood density of four forest species from different successional classes of a mixed system of restoration in a neotropical forest in *** discs were sampled at breast height and analyzed radially by X-ray densitometry to obtain apparent density and basic *** trees each of a species from the pioneer,early and late secondary successional stages and of the dominant species in the climax *** radial profiles indicated increasing density from the pith to bark of trunks,except for some variations due to wood defects and *** density was 0.576 g cm^(-3),0.655 g cm^(-3),0.706 g cm^(-3)and 0.775 g cm^(-3),respectively,for Peltophorum dubium,Schinus terebinthifolius,Cariniana estrellensis and Hymenaea *** profiles indicated higher amplitudes in the apparent densities for slow-growing species.X-ray densitometry generated parameters such as minimum,average and maximum densities,and radial density *** parameters are important for understanding the ecological functional role of successional classes of the Atlantic Forest from the Neotropical region.

Aljustrel mines were classified as having high environmental hazard due to their large tailings volume and high metal concentrations in waters and *** assess acid mine drainage impacted systems whose environmental conditions change quickly,the use of biological indicators with short generation time such as diatoms is *** study combined geochemical and diatom data,whose results were highlighted in 3 groups：Group 1,with low p H（1.9–5.1）and high metal/metalloid（Al,As,Cd,Co,Cu,Fe,Mn,Ni,Pb,Zn;0.65–1032 mg/l）and SO4（405–39124 mg/l）*** acidophilic species,Pinnularia aljustrelica,was perfectly adapted to the adverse conditions;in contrast,teratological forms of Eunotia exigua were found,showing that metal toxicity affected this *** low availability of metals/metalloids in sediments of this group indicates that metals/metalloids of the exchangeable fractions had been solubilized,which in fact enables metal/metalloid diatom uptake and consequently the occurrence of teratologies;Group 2,with sites of near neutral p H（5.0–6.8）and intermediate metal/metalloid（0.002–6 mg/l）and SO4（302–2179 mg/l）concentrations;this enabled the existence of typical species of uncontaminated streams（Brachysira neglectissima,Achnanthidium minutissimum）;Group 3,with samples from unimpacted sites,showing low metal/metalloid（0–0.8 mg/l）and SO4（10–315 mg/l）concentrations,high pH（7.0–8.4）and Cl contents（10–2119 mg/l）and the presence of brackish to marine species（Entomoneis paludosa）.For similar conditions of acidity,differences in diversity,abundance and teratologies of diatoms can be explained by the levels of metals/metalloids.

In vitro antileishmanial effects of Physalis angulata root extract on leishmania infantum

Objective： In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the aqueous extract of Physalis angulata root （AEPa） on leishmania infanturn proliferation, morphology, and the driving mechanism in leishmanicidal activity and modulatory action on macrophages. Methods： I., infantum promastigotes were treated with 50 and 100 μg/ml AEPa for 72 h and then antipro- mastigote assay was performed by counts in a Newbauer chamber, morphological changes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and the mechanism of the leishmanicidal activity was detected. In addition, macrophages were infected with l. infantum and were used to evaluate anti-amastigote activity of AEPa and effects of AEPa on cytokine secretion after 72-hour treatment. Results： Treatment with AEPa reduced the numbers ofl infantum promastigotes （50% inhibitory concen- tration （ICso） = 65.9μg/ml; selectivity index （SI）= 22.1） and amastigotes （ICso = 37.9 μg/ml; SI = 38.5） compared with the untreated control. Amphotericin B reduced 100% of the promastigote numbers after 72 h of treatment （IC50 = 0.2μg/ml）. AEPa induced several morphological changes and increased the production of reactive oxygen species and apoptotic death in promastigotes after treating for 72 h. AEPa （100 μg/ml） promoted tumor necrosis factor-α secretion in macrophages infected with l. infantum after 72 h of treatment, but did not induce an increase in this cytokine in noninfected macrophages. In addition, AEPa showed no cytotoxic effect on J774-A1 cells （50% cytotoxic concentration 〉1000μg/ml）. Conclusion： AEPa presented antileishmanial activity against the promastigotes and amastigotes of I.. infantum without macrophage cytotoxicity; these results show that natural products such as P. angulata have leishmanicidal potential and in the future may be an alternative treatment for leishmaniasis.

PtRu nanoparticles supported on noble carbons for ethanol electrooxidation

In this work,three cytosine derived nitrogen doped carbonaceous materials(noble carbons,NCs)with different atomic C/N ratios and porous networks have been synthesized and used as supports for Pt Ru electrocatalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction(EOR)for clean hydrogen ***,the metal phase and the carbon support play critical roles in the electrocatalysts final *** NPs size distribution was obtained over supports with low atomic C/N ratios(i.e.,4 and 6)and defined porosity(i.e.,1701 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/CNZ and 1834 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/ClZ,respectively).In contrast,a lower C/N ratio and poor porous network(i.e.,65 m^(2)g^(-1),Pt Ru/ClK)led to the largest particle size and fostered an increase of the alloying degree between Pt and Ru NPs(i.e.,3%for C/N~6 and 28%for C/N~3).Electrochemical active surface area was found to increase with decreasing NPs size and the alloy extent,due to a higher availability of Pt active *** degradation tests showed that Pt Ru/NCs outperform similar to Pt Ru NPs on commercial carbon pointing at the stabilizing effect of *** Ru/CNZ exhibited the best electrochemical performance(i.e.,69.1 m A mgPt-1),outperforming Pt Ru/ClZ and Pt Ru/ClK by3-and 9-fold,respectively,due to a suitable compromise between particle sizes,degree of alloy,textural properties and elemental *** anodes were scaled-up to a proton exchange membrane cell and Pt Ru/CNZ was proved to provide the best electrocatalytic activity(262 m A cm^(-2)and low energy requirements),matching the values obtained by the state of the art of EOR electrocatalysts.

AIM: To study the therapeutic effect of three tubeguides with electrical conductivity associated to mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) on neuro-muscular regeneration after ***: Rats with 10-mm gap nerve injury were tested using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), PVA-carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and MSCs, and PVA-polypyrrole(PPy). The regenerated nerves and tibialis anterior muscles were processed for stereological studies after 20 wk. The functional recovery was assessed serially for gait biomechanical analysis, by extensor postural thrust, sciatic functional index and static sciatic functionalindex(SSI), and by withdrawal reflex latency(WRl). In vitro studies included cytocompatibility, flow cytometry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and karyotype analysis of the MSCs. Histopathology of lung, liver, kidneys, and regional lymph nodes ensured the biomaterials biocompatibility. RESUlTS: SSI remained negative throughout and independently from treatment. Differences between treted groups in the severity of changes in WRl existed, showing a faster regeneration for PVA-CNTs-MSCs(P less acute ankle joint angles were seen for PVA-CNTs-MSCs group(P = 0.051) suggesting improved ankle muscles function during the push off phase of the gait cycle. In PVA-PPy and PVA-CNTs groups, there was a 25% and 42% increase of average fiber area and a 13% and 21% increase of the "minimal Feret's diameter" respectively. Stereological analysis disclosed a significantly(P lin thickness(M), ratio myelin thickness/axon diameter(M/d) and ratio axon diameter/fiber diameter(d/D; g-ratio) in PVA-CNT-MSCs group(P lUSION: Results revealed that treatment with MSCs and PVA-CNTs tube-guides induced better nerve fiber regeneration. Functional and kinematics analysis revealed positive synergistic effects brought by MSCs and PVA-CNTs. In the last three decades,the understanding of the renin angiotensin system(RAS)has been changed by the discoveries of functional local systems,novel biologically active peptides,additional specific receptors,alternative pathways of angiotensin(Ang)?Ⅱ?generation,and new roles for enzymes and precursor components other than those in Ang?Ⅱ?*** this regard,the discovery that Ang-(1-7)opposes the pressor,proliferative,pro-fibrotic,and pro-inflammatory effects mediated by Ang?Ⅱ?has contributed to the realization that the RAS is composed of two *** first axis consists of the angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE),with Ang?Ⅱ?as the end product,and the angiotensin type 1(AT1)receptor as the main effector mediating the biological actions of Ang?Ⅱ.The second axis results from ACE2-mediated hydrolysis of Ang?Ⅱ,leading to the production of Ang-(1-7),with the Mas receptor as the main effector conveying the vasodilatory,antiproliferative,anti-fibrotic,and anti-inflammatory effects of Ang-(1-7).Experimental and clinical studies have shown that both axes of the RAS may take part in the pathogenesis of liver *** this manuscript,we summarize the current evidence regarding the role of RAS in hepatic cirrhosis and its complications,including hemodynamic changes and hepatorenal *** therapeutic potential of the modulation of RAS molecules in liver diseases is also discussed.

Objective: To evaluate the acaricidal activity of the essential oil obtained from roots of Derris floribunda(D. floribunda)(Miq.) Benth, and its main constituent nerolidol against the Mexican mite Tetranychus mexicanus(T. mexicanus)(Mc Gregor).Methods: The essential oil from the roots of D. floribunda collected in the Amazon region(Brazil) was obtained by hydrodistillation. Its chemical composition was determined by GC–MS analysis. The acaricidal activities of this essential oil and nerolidol,were evaluated by recording the number of dead females(mortality) and eggs(fertility).Results: The essential oil showed sesquiterpenes as major volatile components. Nerolidol, the main component, represented 68.5% of the total composition of the essential oil. D. floribunda essential oil and nerolidol showed acaricidal activity, with lC_(50) of9.61 mg/m l air and 9.2 mg/m l air, respectively, over a 72 h period. In addition, both the essential oil and nerolidol significantly reduced the fecundity of T. ***: Due to the economic importance of T. mexicanus and the lack of new pesticides, our data are very promising in the search for efficient and safer acaricidal products. Furthermore, this is the first report about the chemical composition and bioactivity of the essential oil of the Amazon plant species D. floribunda.
