Skin is widely used as a drug delivery route due to its easy access and the possibility of using relatively painless methods for the administration of bioactive ***,the barrier properties of the skin,along with its multilayer structure,impose severe restrictions on drug transport and ***,bioengineered models aimed at emulating the skin have been developed not only for optimizing the transdermal transport of different drugs and testing the safety and toxicity of substances but also for understanding the biological processes behind skin *** though in vivo research is often preferred to study biological processes involving the skin,in vitro and ex vivo strategies have been gaining increasing relevance in recent ***,there is a noticeably increasing adoption of in vitro and ex vivo methods by internationally accepted ***,microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices are nowadays emerging as valuable tools for functional and behavioural skin *** in miniaturization,automation and reliability still need to be addressed in order to create skin models that can predict skin behaviour in a robust,high-throughput manner,while being compliant with regulatory issues,standards and *** this review,skin models for transdermal transport,wound repair and cutaneous toxicity will be discussed with a focus on high-throughput *** microfluidic strategies driven by advancements in microfabrication technologies will also be revised as a way to improve the efficiency of existing models,both in terms of complexity and throughput.

Effect of propranolol on the splanchnic and peripheral renin angiotensin system in cirrhotic patients

AIM:To evaluate the effect of β-blockade on angiotensins in the splanchnic and peripheral circulation of cirrhotic patients and also to compare hemodynamic parameters during liver transplantation according to propranolol pre-treatment or not. METHODS:Patients were allocated into two groups:outpatients with advanced liver disease(lD) and during liver transplantation(lT). Both groups were subdivided according to treatment with propranolol or not. Plasma was collected through peripheral venipuncture to determine plasma renin activity(PRA),Angiotensin(Ang) Ⅰ,Ang Ⅱ,and Ang-(1-7) levels by radioimmunoassay in lD group. During liver transplantation,hemodynamic parameters were determined and blood samples were obtained from the portal vein to measure renin angiotensin system(RAS) ***:PRA,Ang Ⅰ,Ang Ⅱ and Ang-(1-7) were signifi cantly lower in the portal vein and periphery in all subgroups treated with propranolol as compared to non-treated. The relationships between Ang-(1-7) and Ang Ⅰ levels and between Ang Ⅱ and Ang Ⅰ were significantly increased in lD group receiving propranolol. The ratio between Ang-(1-7) and Ang Ⅱ remained unchanged in splanchnic and peripheral circulation in patients under β-blockade,whereas the relationship between Ang Ⅱ and Ang Ⅰ was significantly increased in splanchnic circulation of lT patients treated with propranolol. During liver transplantation,cardiac output and index as well systemic vascular resistance and index were reduced in propranolol-treated subgroup. CONClUSION:In lD group,propranolol treatment reduced RAS mediators,but did not change the ratio between Ang-(1-7) and Ang Ⅱ in splanchnic and peripheral circulation. Furthermore,the modification of hemodynamic parameters in propranolol treated patients was not associated with changes in the angiotensin ratio.

NEW HYBRID CONJUGATE GRADIENT METHOD AS A CONVEX COMBINATION OF lS AND FR METHODS

In this paper, we present a new hybrid conjugate gradient algorithm for unconstrained optimization. This method is a convex combination of liu-Storey conjugate gradient method and Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient method. We also prove that the search direction of any hybrid conjugate gradient method, which is a convex combination of two conjugate gradient methods, satisfies the famous D-l conjugacy condition and in the same time accords with the Newton direction with the suitable condition. Furthermore, this property doesn't depend on any line search. Next, we also prove that, moduling the value of the parameter t,the Newton direction condition is equivalent to Dai-liao conjugacy *** strong Wolfe line search conditions are *** global convergence of this new method is *** comparisons show that the present hybrid conjugate gradient algorithm is the efficient one.

Coffee is currently the second largest commodity on the world market today,and there is great concern about the quality of the beans exported from producer countries to Europe and *** such as using blends of different species and adding low-cost raw materials,such as chicory,corn,and soybean,impair the sensory and functional characteristics of the drink made from roasted and ground coffee *** is a need to adopt more efficient analytical methods than the microscopy technique currently *** first chromatographic method used to determine fraud was reported in *** method used paper chromatography to differentiate between coffee and chicory based on the free reducing *** of the 1980s,different methods involving high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography were developed in order to demonstrate geographic authenticity,distinction between species,occurrence of adulteration,and the presence of defective beans by determining the monosaccharides,oligosaccharides,tocopherols,fatty acids,volatiles,diterpenes,sterols,and phenolic substances,among *** far as the authors know,there are no papers published in the literature that have compiled such an extensive set of information about these chromatographic methods as *** the last 2 years,there has been a trend to develop analytical methods for ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to confirm fraud in coffee,due to high sensitivity and selectivity.

Hazardous elements and amorphous nanoparticles in historical estuary coal mining area

In Brazil, intense coal exploitation activities have led to environmental deterioration, including soil mortification, water contamination, loss of ecosystem, and atmospheric contamination. In addition,considerable quantities of sulfur-rich residues are left behind in the mining area; these residues pose grave environmental issues as they undergo sulfide oxidation reactions. When sulfur oxides come in contact with water, extreme acid leachate is produced with great proportions of sulfate, and hazardous elements(HEs), which are identified as coal drainage(CMD). CMD is an environmental pollution challenge, particularly in countries with historic or active coal mines. To prevent CMD formation or its migration, the source must be controlled; however, this may not be feasible at many locations. In such scenarios, the mine water should be collected, treated, and discharged. In this study, data from 2005 to2010 was gathered on the geochemistry of 11 CMD discharges from ten different mines. There are several concerns and questions on the formation of nanominerals in mine acid drainage and on their reactions and interfaces. The detailed mineralogical and geochemical data presented in this paper were derived from previous studies on the coal mine areas in Brazil. Oxyhydroxides, sulfates, and nanoparticles in these areas possibly go through structural transformations depending on their size and formation conditions. The geochemistry of Fe-precipitates(such as jarosite, goethite, and hematite) existent in the CMD-generating coal areas and those that could be considered as a potential source of hazardous elements(HEs)(e.g., Cr) were also studied because these precipitates are relatively stable in extremely low pH conditions. The adsorption capacity of hydrogels derived from modified xylan hemicellulose has been tested in order to develop new bio-based adsorbent materials useful for removing metal ions pollutants,such as Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ)and Pb(Ⅱ)from an aqueous *** was extracted from bleached kraft pulp of eucalyptus and subsequently modified with different proportions of functional sulfonic acid groups(HA3-HA7)and sulfonate groups(HS30-HS70)to generate *** results showed that all the synthesized hydrogels were capable of adsorbing metal ions,being the hydrogels with 30%and 50%xylan the ones that presented the highest adsorption *** capacity studies at different initial concentrations revealed that at an initial concentration of 300 mg·l-1,the HA3 hydrogel presented an adsorption capacity of 193mg Pb(Ⅱ),182 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 66 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HA5 hydrogel presented a capacity of 185 mg Pb(Ⅱ),113 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 48 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HS30 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption of 205 mg Pb(Ⅱ),174 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 71 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g hydrogel,and HS50 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption capacity of 273 mg Pb(Ⅱ),143 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 45 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** results show that modified Xylan hemicellulose is a promising adsorbent for removal Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ),and Pb(Ⅱ)ions from aqueous solutions.

Clinical outcomes with a new design in multifocal intraocular lens:a pilot study

Purpose:To evaluate the clinical and visual outcomes,quality of near vision and the influence of photic phenomena in patients bilaterally implanted with a new Precizon Presbyopic multifocal intraocular lens(IOl).Methods:In this prospective consecutive case series,20 eyes of 10 patients were included(mean age 63.80±12.55 years).Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity(far,intermediate and near),subjective refraction,binocular defocus curve,contrast sensitivity(CSV-1000)and quality of vision and satisfaction questionnaires were *** follow-up was 12 months after ***:At 12 months after surgery,uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA)improved with surgery(p=0.001)with a value of 0.08±0.08 *** near visual acuity(UNVA)was 0.22±0.12 logMAR and distance corrected near visual acuity(DCNVA)was 0.16±0.13 *** distance visual acuity(UIVA)was 0.22±0.10 *** sensitivity outcomes were similar to normal population in photopic conditions and slightly reduced in mesopic conditions of *** curve showed that this multifocal IOl was able to provide a visual acuity(VA)equal or better to 0.16 logMAR between defocus levels of+1.00 to−2.50 *** patient satisfaction was obtained in quality of vision and satisfaction questionnaires ***:The Precizon Presbyopic NVA IOl(OPHTEC BV)provides good visual *** multifocal IOl provides a high percentage of spectacle independence due to good VA at far,intermediate and near distances and satisfactory contrast *** patient satisfaction was observed in quality of vision and satisfaction questionnaires with a low percentage of patients manifesting photic phenomena.

The daily practice of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in elderly patients has brought up the attention of outcome research and resource allocation. determinants to predict survival have been well identified. There has been empirical evidence that CPR is of doubtful utility in the geriatric population, more studies have showed controversial data. Sometimes situations in which CPR needs to be given in the elderly, causes stress to healthcare providers, due to lack of communication of the patient’s wishes and the belief that it will not be successful. It is of importance to state that we have the duty to identify on time the patients that will most likely benefit from CPR, and find out the preferences of the same. Whenever it is possible to institute these guidelines, we will avoid patient suffering.

BACKGROUND Antiviral treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB)in the grey zone of treatment comands risk management in order to optimize the health *** this sense,the identification of HBV mutants related with an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)could be useful to identify subpopulations with potential indication of antiviral *** To analyze the prevalence/persistence of hepatitis B virus(HBV)preS and basal core promoter(BCP)/precore/core variants associated to HCC development in CHB patients in the grey *** Work was designed as a longitudinal retrospective study,including 106 plasma samples from 31 patients with CHB in the grey zone of treatment:Hepatitis B e antigen negative,HBV-DNA levels between 12-20000 IU/ml,normal or discordant transaminase levels during follow up and mild/moderate necroinflammatory activity in liver biopsy or Fibroscan(up to 9.5 kPa).Serum HBVDNA was tested using the Abbott Real Time HBV Assay and the BCP/precore/core and the hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)coding regions were analyzed in positive samples by PCR/bulk-sequencing to identify the HCCrelated HBV *** High-risk HCC related mutants were detected in 24(77%)patients:19(61%)in the BCP/precore/core,and 7(23%)in the HBsAg coding region(2 preS1 and 5 preS2 deletions).The prevalence of preS deletions was genotype-dependent:3/5(60%)patients with preS2 deletions and 1/2 with preS1 deletions were infected with the HBV-E *** HBV-E was the most prevalent in sub-Saharan patients,a correlation between preS deletions and ethnicity was also found:6/8(75%)sub-Saharan vs 1/19(5%)Caucasian patients had preS deletions(P=0.00016).Remarkably,this correlation was maintained in those patients infected with HBV-A,a minor genotype in sub-Saharan patients:2/2 patients infected with HBV-A from West Africa vs 0/6 of Caucasian origin had preS *** HCC related variants were the major strains and persisted over time(up to 48 mo).Pa
