Wettability is known to play a major role in enhancing pool boiling heat *** this context bioinspired surfaces can bring significant advantages in pool boiling *** work addresses a numerical investigation of bubble growth and detachment on a biphilic surface pattern,namely in a superhydrophobic region surrounded by a hydrophilic *** characteristics resemble bioinspired solutions explored in our research group,mainly considering the main topographical *** numerical approach is intended to provide additional information to an experimental approach,allowing to obtain temperature,pressure and velocity fields in and around the bubble,which help to describe bubble *** model was validated based on experimental data obtained with extensive image processing of synchronized high-speed video and high-speed thermographic *** results obtained here clearly evidence that combining enhanced direct numerical simulations with high-resolution transient experimental measurements is a promising tool to describe the complex and intricate hydrodynamic and heat transfer phenomena governing pool boiling on heated biphilic surfaces.

BACKGROUND Perioperative fluorouracil plus leucovorin,oxaliplatin,and docetaxel(FlOt)improves prognosis in locally advanced gastric cancer(lAGC).Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte(NlR),lymphocyte-tomonocyte(lMR),and platelet-to-lymphocyte(PlR)ratios are prognostic biomarkers but not predictive *** to assess blood ratios’(NlR,lMR and PlR)potential predictive response to FlOt and survival outcomes in resectable lAGC *** this was a multicentric retrospective study investigating the clinical potential of NlR,lMR,and PlR in resectable lAGC patients,treated with at least one preoperative FlOt cycle,from 12 Portuguese *** were compared through non-parametric Mann-Whitney *** operating characteristic curve analysis defined the cut-off values as:High PlR>141 for progression and>144 for mortality;high lMR>3.56 for t stage regression(tsR).Poisson and Cox regression models the calculated relative risks/hazard ratios,using NlR,pathologic complete response,tsR,and tumor regression grade(tRG)as independent variables,and overall survival(Os)as the dependent *** this study included 295 patients(mean age,63.7 years;59.7% males).NlR was correlated with survival time(r=0.143,P=0.014).PlR was associated with systemic progression during FlOt(P=0.022)and mortality(P=0.013),with high PlR patients having a 2.2-times higher risk of progression[95% confidence interval(CI):0.89-5.26]and 1.5-times higher risk of mortality(95%CI:0.92-2.55).lMR was associated with tsR,and high lMR patients had a 1.4-times higher risk of achieving tsR(95%CI:1.01-1.99).Os benefit was found with tsR(P=0.015)and partial/complete tRG(Ptients without tsR and with no evidence of pathological response had 2.1-times(95%CI:1.14-3.96)and 2.8-times(95%CI:1.6-5)higher risk of *** Higher NlR is correlated with longer survival *** lMR patients have a higher risk of decreasing t stage,whereas high PlR patients have higher odds of progressing under FlOt a

Conjugated luminescent polymers and oligomers, exhibiting stimulated emission(sE), are dispersed in polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), films and optical fibers,either by blending or upon copolymerisation. With this PMMA doping, we aim to achieve gain and ultrafast optical switching. the modification of the dopant's chemical structure allows the tuning of the sE spectral region. Furthermore, we aim to achieve dopant chain isolation while maximising their concentration. In this paper, we present an overview of the research done in this area in the context of the European Union(EU)-funded research project “plastic optical fibers with embedded active polymers for data communications——POlYCOM”.

AIM: to analyze the attitude of spanish medical students toward living liver donation (llD) and to establish which factors have an influence on this ***: study type: A sociological, interdisciplinary, multicenter and observational study. study population: Medical students enrolled in spain (n = 34000) in the university academic year 2010-2011. sample size: A sample of 9598 students stratified by geographical area and academic year. Instrument used to measure attitude: A validated questionnaire (PCID-DVH RIOs) was self-administered and completed anonymously. data collection procedure: Randomly selected medical schools. the questionnaire was applied to each academic year at compulsory sessions. statistical analysis: student´s t test, χsup>2sup> test and logistic regression ***: the completion rate was 95.7% (n = 9275). 89% (n = 8258) were in favor of related llD, and 32% (n = 2937) supported unrelated llD. the following variables were associated with having a more favorable attitude: (1) age (P = 0.008); (2) sex (P l area (P = 0.013); (5) believing in the possibility of needing a transplant oneself in the future (P ttitude toward deceased donation (P ttitude toward living kidney donation (P tance of a donated liver segment from a family member if one were needed (P scussed the subject with one’s family (P s (P tner’s opinion about the subject (P t activities of an altruistic nature; and (12) fear of the possible mutilation of the body after donation (P lUsION: spanish medical students have a favorable attitude toward llD.

BACKGROUND: this study aimed to compare the rates of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies and outcomes in patients with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2DM) in spain from 2003 to 2013. MEtHODs: We collected all cases of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies using national hospital discharge data and evaluated the annual cholecystectomy rates stratiifed by t2DM status. We analyzed tendency for in-hospital mortality (IHM). We also analyzed the impact of t2DM on IHM in patients who underwent cholecystectomies. REsUlts: We identiifed 611 533 cholecystectomies (71.3%laparoscopic) in the patients, in whom 78 227 (12.8%) patients had t2DM. the rates of open cholecystectomies were 3-fold higher (130.0/105 vs 41.1/105) in patients with t2DM than in those without t2DM, and the rate of laparoscopic cholecys-tectomies was almost 2-fold higher (195.2/105 vs 111.8/105) in patients with t2DM. the annual rate of laparoscopic pro-cedures showed an 11-year relative increase of 88.3% (from 117.0/105 to 220.3/105) in t2DM and 49.2% (from 79.2/105 to 118.2/105) in patients without t2DM (Ps the rate of open procedures showed an 11-year relative decrease of 27.6% in patients with t2DM and 37.9% in those without t2DM (Pthe rate of emergency laparoscopic cho-lecystectomy was increased in the 11 years, whereas the rate of emergency open cholecystectomies was decreased (both Pltivariate analysis revealed that older age, higher comorbidity and emergency cholecystectomy were associated with a higher IHM. Compared with patients without t2DM, patients with t2DM demonstrated a lower IHM after open cholecystectomy [OR=0.82 (0.78-0.87)], but a higher IHM after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (OR=1.18 (1.03-1.35))time-trend analyses showed a signiifcant reduction in IHM in patients with or without t2DM after the two procedures. Background： the stomach is an underestimated key interface between the ingesta and the digestive system, affecting the digestion and playing an important role in several endocrine functions. the quality of starter microbiota and the early life feeding of medium chain triglycerides may affect porcine gastric maturation. two trials（t1, t2） were carried out on 12 and 24 cesarean-delivered piglets（birth, d0）, divided over two microbiota treatments, but slaughtered and sampled at two or three weeks of age, respectively. All piglets were fed orally： sow serum（t1） or pasteurized sow colostrum（t2） on d0; simple starter microbiota（lactobacillus amylovorus, Clostridium glycolicum and Parabacteroides spp.）（d1-d3）; complex microbiota inoculum（sow diluted feces, CA） or a placebo（simple association, sA）（d3-d4） and milk replacer ad libitum（d0-d4）. the the t1 piglets and half of the t2 piglets were then fed a moist diet（CtRl）; the remaining half of the t2 piglets were fed the CtRl diet fortified with medium chain triglycerides and 7% coconut oil（MCt）. total m RNA from the oxyntic mucosa was analyzed using Affymetrix？Porcine Gene array strips.
