Ionic liquids are.possible.alte.native.solve.ts for the.se.aration of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons by liquid-liquid e.trac- tion. Inte.facial te.sion is an important prope.ty to conside. in the.de.ign of liquid-liquid e.traction proce.se.. In this work, the.liquid-liquid inte.facial te.sion and the.mutual solubility at 25 ℃ have.be.n me.sure. for a se.ie. of biphasic, e.uilibrate. mixture. of an ionic liquid and a hydrocarbon. In particular, the.ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-me.hylimidazolium bis（trifluorome. thane.ulfonyl）imide.（with the.alkyl substitue.t be.ng e.hyl, he.yl or de.yl）, 1-e.hyl-3-me.hylimidazolium e.hylsulfate. and 1-e.hyl-3-me.hylimidazolium me.hane.ulfonate.have.be.n se.e.te., as we.l as the.hydrocarbons be.ze.e. he.ane. e.hylbe.- ze.e. and octane. The.se.e.te. se.s of ionic liquids and hydrocarbons allow the.analysis of the.influe.ce.of a se.ie. of e.fe.ts on the.inte.facial te.sion. For e.ample. the.inte.facial te.sion de.re.se. with an incre.se.in the.le.gth of the.alkyl substitue.t chain of the.cation or with an incre.se.of the.de.re. of charge.de.ocalisation in the.anion of the.ionic liquid. Also, the.inte.fa- cial te.sion with the.aromatic hydrocarbons is marke.ly lowe. than that with the.aliphatic hydrocarbons. A smalle. e.fe.t is cause. by variation of the.size.of the.hydrocarbon. Some.of the.obse.ve. tre.ds can be.e.plaine. from the.mutual solubility of the.hydrocarbon and the.ionic liquid.
