Objective: To evaluate the association of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, and risk factors with occurrence of pressure ulcers in institutionalized elderly people. Method: This cross-sectional, analytical study, in quantitative approach, performed from the database analysis linked to the project “Pressure Ulcer in institutionalized elderly people: Association of incidence with the risk factors to functional and nutritional assessment” developed in six long-stay institutions for the elderly people in João Pessoa. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Associations were made through chi square test and Odds Ratio. Results: The clinical conditions of significant associations with the occurrence of pressure ulcers were the variables neurological disorders (p = 0.011) and visual impairment (p = 0.005). As for risk factors, the most important was fecal incontinence (p Conclusion: The analysis of the associations pointed out problems that require intervention in order to prevent health implications of the elderly people and to minimize the risk and occurrence of this injury.

^(11)C-PK11195 is a positron emitter tracer used for Positron Emission Tomography(PET)imaging of innate immune cell activation in studies of neuroinflammatory *** the image quantitative analysis,it is necessary to quantify the intact fraction of this tracer in the arterial plasma during imaging acquisition(plasma intact fraction).Due to the complexity and costs involved in this analysis it is important to evaluate the real necessity of individual analysis in each 11C-PK11195 PET imaging *** purpose of this study is to compare 11CPK11195 plasma metabolization rate between healthy controls and multiple sclerosis(MS)patients and evaluate the interference of sex,age,treatment,and disease phenotype in the tracer intact fraction measured in arterial plasma samples.11C-PK11195 metabolization rate in arterial plasma was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography in samples from MS patients(n=50)and healthy controls(n=23)at 20,45,and 60 minutes after 11C-PK11195 *** were also stratified by sex,age,treatment type,and MS *** results showed no significant differences in the metabolization rate of healthy controls and MS patients,or in the stratified *** conclusion,11C-PK11195 metabolization has the same rate in patients with MS and healthy controls,which is not affected by sex,age,treatment,and disease ***,these findings could contribute to exempting the necessity for tracer metabolization determination in all 11C-PK11195 PET imaging acquisition,by using a population metabolization rate *** study procedures were approved by the Ethics Committee for Research Projects analysis of the Hospital das Clinicas of the University of Sao Paulo Medical School(approval No.624.065)on April 23,2014.

Background: This study evaluated the effects of Eimeria spp. challenge and dietary supplementation with free methionine or methionine dipeptide on animal performance;expression of genes associated with the immune system, antioxidant system, and amino acid transport in the jejunum;and redox status of the jejunum of broiler ***: A randomized, 2 × 3 factorial design was used, in which Eimeria spp. challenge was the first factor(Eimeria-challenged, EC, or unchallenged, UC, broilers) and methionine supplementation was the second factor(non-supplemented, NS;free DL-methionine, DL-Met;and methionine dipeptide, DL-methionyl-DL-methionine, DLMMet). At 14 days of age, chickens were inoculated orally with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria praecox, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria mitis. Birds were killed by cervical dislocation 144 h post-inoculation(PI), and the jejunum was collected for biochemical and molecular ***: EC broilers had a 13% lower feed intake(FI), 37% lower body weight gain(BWG), and 39% higher feed conversion ratio(FCR) than UC broilers. Chickens fed the DL-Met diet had higher BWG(about 12% higher) and better FCR(about 12% lower) than chickens fed the NS diet. EC chickens had lower relative weight of the bursa of Fabricius(51.8%) and higher relative weights of the spleen and whole intestine(53.6% and 26.3%, respectively) than UC chickens. Eimeria spp. challenge led to an increase in the levels of oxidative substances, such as nitrite and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS), in the jejunum of chickens 144 h PI. Among UC chickens, those fed the DL-Met diet had higher total antioxidant capacity(TAC) and lower catalase(CAT) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activities. EC chickens that received the NS diet had higher carbonylated protein content(CP). This result was associated with their lower TAC and catalase activity. As forests in neotropical regions,particularly in developing countries,are devastated,interventions to restore biodiversity and its ecological functions are *** producers have thus been encouraged to grow trees for wood production as an economic *** objective of this study was to quantify the increment of wood density of four forest species from different successional classes of a mixed system of restoration in a neotropical forest in *** discs were sampled at breast height and analyzed radially by X-ray densitometry to obtain apparent density and basic *** trees each of a species from the pioneer,early and late secondary successional stages and of the dominant species in the climax *** radial profiles indicated increasing density from the pith to bark of trunks,except for some variations due to wood defects and *** density was 0.576 g cm^(-3),0.655 g cm^(-3),0.706 g cm^(-3)and 0.775 g cm^(-3),respectively,for Peltophorum dubium,Schinus terebinthifolius,Cariniana estrellensis and Hymenaea *** profiles indicated higher amplitudes in the apparent densities for slow-growing species.X-ray densitometry generated parameters such as minimum,average and maximum densities,and radial density *** parameters are important for understanding the ecological functional role of successional classes of the Atlantic Forest from the Neotropical region.

Obesity is associated with several diseases,including mental *** tissue is distributed around the internal organs,acting in the regulation of metabolism by storing and releasing fatty acids and adipokine in the *** nutritional intake results in hypertrophy and proliferation of adipocytes,leading to local hypoxia in adipose tissue and changes in these adipokine *** leads to the recruitment of immune cells to adipose tissue and the release of pro-inflammatory *** presence of high levels of free fatty acids and inflammatory molecules interfere with intracellular insulin signaling,which can generate a neuroinflammatory *** this review,we provide an up-to-date discussion of how excessive obesity can lead to possible cognitive *** also address the idea that obesity-associated systemic inflammation leads to neuroinflammation in the brain,particularly the hypothalamus and hippocampus,and that this is partially responsible for these negative cognitive *** addition,we discuss some clinical models and animal studies for obesity and clarify the mechanism of action of anti-obesity drugs in the central nervous system.

Ecophysiological acclimatization to cyclic water stress in Eucalyptus

Drought is considered the main environmental factor limiting productivity in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. However, recent studies have reported that exposure to water deficit conditions enables plants to respond to subsequent stresses. Thus, this study investigates the ecophysiological acclimatization of eucalyptus clones submitted to recurrent water deficit cycles. Eucalyptus seedlings were submitted to three recurrent water deficit cycles and anatomical, morphological and physiological changes were analyzed. The results were:(1) Eucalyptus seedlings responded to water deficits by directing carbohydrates to root and stem growth;(2) Size and number of stomata were reduced;(3) Stomatal conductance decreased which allowed the plants to reduce water losses through transpiration,increasing instantaneous water use efficiency;(4) The relationship between gas exchanges and available water contents allowed the seedlings to uptake the retained soil water athigher tensions;and,(5) Physiological recovery from subsequent water deficits became faster. As a result of these changes, the eucalyptus seedlings recovered from the same degree of water stress more rapidly.

Aim:To investigate the effects of cisplatin on the human non-small cell lung carcinoma(NCI-H460)cell line regarding cytotoxicity,genotoxicity,and expression of genes associated with apoptosis(BIRC5)and autophagy(BECN1).Methods:Cell cultures were treated with cisplatin concentrations(0.16-33.3μmol/L)for 48 *** and acute and chronic cytotoxicities were assessed using the MTT,clonogenic,and cytokinesis-block micronucleus *** expression of BIRC5 and BECN1 was evaluated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain ***:Cisplatin IC50(0.33μmol/L)increased micronucleus frequency 2.50 *** was also cytotoxic in the 0.6-33.3μmol/L range,with reduced expression of the BIRC5 gene,suggesting induction of *** reducing the expression of the BIRC5 gene,33.3μmol/L cisplatin increased the expression of the BECN1 gene,suggesting that autophagy can be related to cisplatin ***:Cisplatin inhibited NCI-H460 growth,and cisplatin IC50 induced genotoxic *** higher cisplatin concentrations are used,the expression of genes associated with apoptosis and autophagy was *** results points to a further investigation of the role of autophagy in cisplatin resistance.

Influence of Photoperiod over Morphometric and Hematological Parameters of Juvenile Piracanjubas （Brycon orbygnianus）

The aim of this study was to evaluate morphometric and hematological parameters of juveniles Piracanjubas treated with two distinct photoperiod. Twenty nine fish with 100 g, in a factorial design were performed in 18 h light：6 h dark （18L：6D） and 6L：lSD two different photoperiod, and morphometric and hematological parameters were evaluated at 45 d and 90 d after photoperiod treatment. Benzocaine 1% was used for euthanasia. Fish were weighed and measured, so as visceral fat, liver and gonads. Hematocrit, total count of white cells, lymphocytes and neutrophils were counted. Results showed that there was no significant relationship between bodyweight and standard length. Significant interaction （P = 0.00018） had been found between the fat index （FI） and gonado-somatic index （GSI） and the photoperiod and time. At 90 d, the fish kept in 18L：6D had a lower rate of fat than the fish kept in 6L：18D （P 〈 0.05）. The GSI was higher in the group 6L.＇18D compared with the 18L：6D （P 〈 0.005）. There was no interaction between photoperiod and period of treatment for total leukocyte count, however with 90 d, the total leukocyte count was decreased （P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, decrease of the hematocrit from 58.1% to 46.9% and an increase of lymphocytes from 31.5% to 43.5% had been found in fish kept in 18L：6D after 90 d （P 〈 0.05）. Fish kept in 6L：ISD presented an increase in segmented neutrophils and lymphocytes （P 〈 0.05）. It is concluded that photoperiod maintained at 6L： 18D for Piracanjubas permits a greater gonadal development and an amount of immune cells over the photoperiod maintained in 18L： 6D.

The consumption of marine macroalgae has been linked with health benefits,albeit some actions,including genoprotection,remain ***,we evaluated the genoprotective potential of a mixture of Ulva rigida,Fucus vesiculosus and Gracilaria gracilis,through direct consumption or via indirect intake using fish(Sparus aurata)as a vector of algal ***(Mus musculus)were subjected to a 1-month dietary supplementation with 5%of macroalgae mix or 10%of fillet of fish previously fed with an algae-supplemented aquafeed(for comparison purposes,10%supplementation with fillet of fish standardly fed was also considered).Thereafter,mice were challenged by the genotoxicant methyl methanesulfonate(MMS),and the genetic damage was evaluated through the micronuclei ***,a wider evaluation was carried out encompassing the assessment of energy metabolism,haematological and histological parameters,as well as growth *** unequivocally protected against MMS-induced *** activity profile of hepatic lactate and isocitrate dehydrogenases promoted by the supplemented diets reflected an improved energy *** properties were not transferred via fish fed with the algae-supplemented aquafeed,though the transference of phytocomponents with beneficial properties(*** balance improvement)should not be ***,these findings highlighted the genoprotection afforded by marine macroalgae,likely promoted by desmutagenic factors,reinforcing their definition as functional *** possibility of using fish as an indirect source of algae-borne phytocomponents proved to be plausible and worthy of further investigations.
