The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of silver nitrate in the in vitro development and conservation of passion fruit plants. Experiments were carried out at the Laboratory of Culture and Tissues, in the National Cassava and Fruits Research Center (EMBRAPA), using microcuttings of Passiflora gibertii N. E. Br., previously cultivated in vitro. The microcuttings were placed in MS media supplemented with silver nitrate at concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mg·L-1, and, during 30, 60 and 90 days, the following variables were identified: Shooting length (cm), number of roots, number and coloration of leaves. A completely randomized design with 30 replications in a split-plot scheme was employed. Polynomial regression equations were adjusted in analysis of variance to compare averages of treatments. The obtained results support the assumption of high sensitivity of passion fruit tissues to ethylene, which reflects in the lost of vigor and in the induction of culture senescence by its accumulation. Based on obtained results, and in order to mitigate this problem, it is possible to indicate an addition of 2 mg·L-1?of silver nitrate in culture media, for the micropropagation of passion fruit plant, allowing the controlling of the atmosphere inside the culture test tubes, during the establishment of explants and other steps of the process.

Nitric oxide （NO） is a gaseous reactive oxygen species （ROS） that has evolved as a signaling hormone in many physiological processes in animals. In plants it has been demonstrated to be a crucial regulator of development, acting as a signaling molecule present at each step of the plant life cycle. NO has also been implicated as a signal in biotic and abiotic responses of plants to the environment. Remarkably, despite this plethora of effects and functional relationships, the fundamental knowledge of NO production, sensing, and transduction in plants remains largely unknown or inadequately characterized. In this review we cover the current understanding of NO production, perception, and action in different physiological sce- narios. We especially address the issues of enzymatic and chemical generation of NO in plants, NO sensing and downstream signaling, namely the putative cGMP and Ca^2＋ pathways, ion-channel activity modulation, gene expression regulation, and the interface with other ROS, which can have a profound effect on both NO accumulation and function. We also focus on the importance of NO in cell-cell communication during developmental processes and sexual reproduction, namely in pollen tube guidance and embryo sac fertilization, pathogen defense, and responses to abiotic stress.

I’ve read with great interest the paper of Machairas et al.(1)which is of great interest for the oncological and surgical *** adenocarcinoma(PDAC)is still considered a malignancy with an extremely poor prognosis,being currently the 4th cause of death for cancer and,according to the Global Cancer Statistics in the next decade,it may ascend up to the third cause of death(2).During the last decades,there have been great efforts to improve survival of potentially resectable pancreatic cancer through several ***,the selection of patients:newer preoperative studies have been able to select those patients that might really benefit from ***,the surgical procedure itself improved its outcome:proper mesopancreatic dissection and lymphadenectomy,superior mesenteric artery approach and vascular resection have been able to enhance the R0 resection rate with acceptable morbidity(3).Finally,newer chemotherapies regimens have been introduced,as well,with relevant survival improvement(4).

Coating independent cytotoxicity of citrate-and PEG-coated silver nanoparticles on a human hepatoma cell line

The antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles（AgNPs） resulted in their increasing incorporation into consumer,industrial and biomedical ***,human and environmental exposure to AgNPs（either as an engineered product or a contaminant）supports the emergent research on the features conferring them different toxicity *** this study,30 ran AgNPs coated with citrate or poly（ethylene glycol）（PEG） were used to assess the influence of coating on the effects produced on a human hepatoma cell line（HepG2）,namely in terms of viability,apoptosis,apoptotic related genes,cell cycle and cyclins gene *** types of coated AgNPs decreased cell proliferation and viability with a similar toxicity *** the concentrations used（11 and 5 μg/mL corresponding to IC50 and-IC10 levels,respectively） the amount of cells undergoing apoptosis was not significant and the apoptotic related genes BCL2（anti-apoptotic gene）and BAX（pro-apoptotic gene） were both ***,both AgNPs affected HepG2 cell cycle progression at the higher concentration（11 μg/mL） by increasing the percentage of cells in S（synthesis phase） and G2（Gap 2 phase） *** the cell-cycle related genes,the expression of cyclin B1 and cyclin E1 genes were ***,this work has shown that citrate- and PEG-coated AgNPs impact on HepG2 apoptotic gene expression,cell cycle dynamics and cyclin regulation in a similar *** research is needed to determine the properties that confer AgNPs at lower toxicity,since their use has proved helpful in several industrial and biomedical contexts.

Anti-Candida and anti-Cryptococcus evaluation of 15 non-alkaloidal compounds from Pterogyne nitens

Objective: To evaluate anti-Candida and anti-Cryptococcus activities of 15 nonalkaloidal compounds from Pterogyne nitens Tulasne(Leguminosae), a South American medicinal ***: Compounds were submitted to antifungal assays, using microdilution method described by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute document, with minor modifications. Five species of Candida and two species of Cryptococcus, including clinical isolates were screened. Antifungal activity was expressed by minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC). Amphotericin B and fluconazole were used as standard antifungal ***: Among tested compounds, six substances presented fungal growth inhibition(MIC < 31.2 mg/m L) [three flavone derivatives(1–3), a glycosylated flavonol derivative(5)and two phenolic acids(10 and 12)]. Sorbifolin(1), exhibited potent antifungal activity,demonstrating MIC value of 3.90 mg/m L against Candida glabrata ATCC 90030, Cryptococcus gattii 118 and fluconazole-resistant clinical isolate of Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii. Pedalin(2) and nitensoside B(3), two glycosylated flavone derivatives, were active against Cryptococcus neoformans ATCC 90012(MIC = 7.80 mg/m L).Conclusions: Flavone derivatives from Pterogyne nitens can serve as prototypes for the design and development of innovative anti-Candida and anti-Cryptococcus hits.

Astyanax mexicanus has repeatedly colonized cave environments,displaying evolutionary parallelisms in many troglobitic *** being a model system for the study of adaptation to life in perpetual darkness,the parasites that infect cavefish are practically *** this study,we investigated the macroparasite communities in 18 cavefish populations from independent lineages and compared them with the parasite diversity found in their sister surface fish populations,with the aim of better understanding the role that parasites play in the colonization of new *** the cavefish populations,we identified 13 parasite taxa,including a subset of 10 of the 27 parasite taxa known for the surface *** infecting the cavefish belong to five taxonomic groups,including trematodes,monogeneans,nematodes,copepods,and *** are the most dominant group,found in 14 *** macroparasites include species with direct life cycles and trophic transmission,including invasive ***,paired comparisons indicate higher parasite richness in the cavefish than in the surface *** variation in parasite composition across the caves suggests historical and geographical contingencies in the host-parasite colonization process and potential evolution of local *** base-line data on parasite diversity in cavefish populations of *** provides a foundation to explore the role of divergent parasite infections under contrasting ecological pressures(cave *** environments)in the evolution of cave adaptive traits.

Updated evidence of primary tumor resection in stage Ⅳ breast cancer:a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background:In stage Ⅳ breast cancer,surgical resection of the primary tumor was traditionally performed solely to palliate symptoms such as bleeding,infection,or *** ongoing discussion has shown that there are many research gaps in the current literature and differences in clinical ***,this systematic review and meta-analysis was designed to evaluate how primary tumor resection(PTR)affects the overall survival(OS)of patients with stage Ⅳ breast ***:A thorough literature search was completed using different databases(PubMed,Google Scholar,Scopus,ScienceDirect,and Cochrane Library)to find papers contrasting PTR with no *** quality of research articles was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 Tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale(NOS).Review Manager 5.4 was used to determine how much demographic and clinical factors contribute to heterogeneity through subgroup and meta-regression ***:Data derived from 44 observational studies(OS)and four randomized controlled trials(RCTs)including 227,889 patients were *** all cases,150,239 patients were included in the non-PTR group,and 70,795 patients in the PTR group(37 observational studies and 4 randomized control trials).The pooled outcomes of four RCT studies(Hazard Ratio(HR)=1.03,95%CI:0.67-1.58;I2=88%;Panalysis that compared PTR with non-PTR in patients with stage IV breast cancer for progression free-survival(HR=0.89,95%CI:0.62-1.28;P=0.03;I2=71%)and locoregional progression-free survival(LPFS)(HR=0.33,95%CI:0.14-0.74;P=0.0004;I^(2)=87%)was found to be significant favoring the PTR *** progression-free survival(DPFS)had a non-significant relationship(HR=0.42,95%CI:0.29-0.60;P=0.12;I^(2)=53%),while overall,there was a significant relationship(HR=0.49,95%CI:0
