This paper presents the influence of the ratio IA/PA and concentration of volatile acids (TVA) in the operational stability of a UASB reactor treating swine waste water. The treatment system in real scale was constituted of decanter, followed by the UASB reactor with volume of 7.4 m3 and 11.5 m3, respectively. It has been observed a large oscillation of the ratio IA/IP in the UASB reactor with an average value of 0.39, and average efficiency of removal of BOD and COD of 79.8 and 79.3%, respectively, at the start, dropping to 0.12 in the continuity of the experiment, including during overload, in which the removal efficiencies of COD and BOD reached values below 10%. The TVA average values were 913 mg·L-1 in the UASB reactor, increasing considerably in the overload period, reaching values higher than 4500 mg·L-1, indicating an accumulation of volatile acids and reduced efficiency of the UASB reactor in removal of organic matter. We conclude that the monitoring of the values of the ratio IA/PA and TVA is very useful instruments and easy to determine in the monitoring of the UASB reactor, enabling to predict possible instabilities in the reactor, allowing corrective actions in a timely manner.

<i>In Vitro</i>Priming of Sugarcane Varieties (RB966928 and RB867515)

Sugarcane, as a glycophyte, shows sensitivity to saline soils at various stages of its growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro priming response in two sugarcane varieties (RB966928 and RB867515). Micropropagated plants, from meristems, received priming treatments by adding the salts (naCl and KCl) in different concentrations (0.0;12.5;25.0 and 50.0 mM), in the MS medium. Subsequently, the plants were cultivated in rooting medium without addition of salts, acclimatized and submitted to gradient ex vitro saline stress with 20 → 40 and 60 mM, of each salt, for 30 days. The analyzed variables were dry matter of shoot and root, number of tillers and estimation of chlorophyll content. The experiment was carried out in a 2 × 2 × 4 factorial arrangement, in a completely randomized experimental design. Twenty replicates were used throughout the experiment. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and regression and the means were compared by Tukey’s test, at a 5% probability level. The priming treatments presented a significant effect, with triple interaction, in the chlorophyll index. In the treatment with naCl, the variety RB966928 showed an increase in the chlorophyll index with the increase of treatment levels, up to an optimal limit of 31.47 mM. On the other hand, the variety RB867515 showed decreasing in chlorophyll index. In contrast, in KCl treatment, the variety RB867515 presented the increase at the chlorophyll index with the maximum point of 25 mM. For the variables, shoot dry matter (SDM) and root dry matter (RDM) there was a significant difference (p 0.05 and p 0.01, respectively) only between the varieties. The variety RB966928 presented higher SDM and RDM in relation to the variety RB867515. Studies are recommended with increasing the duration of the priming treatments and more detailed study of the culture throughout its productive cycle.

Dunnigan-type partial lipodystrophy, which is characterized by a number of metabolic alterations, change in body fat distribution, and autosomal dominant inheritance pattern, is rare in the general population. Objective: To report the case of an adolescent with clinical and laboratory findings suggestive of Dunnigan-type partial lipodystrophy. Methods: Case report and literature review. Results: A 15-year-old adolescent presented at the clinic complaining of darkening of skin folds on her trunk and back. During physical examination, the presence of serious acanthosis nigricans in her cervical region, axillae, and intergluteal space was noted. Hirsutism in androgen-dependent areas was also observed, as well as relevant reduction of subcutaneous adipose tissue in the limbs, gluteal region, abdomen, and trunk and fat accumulation in the face and chin. Discussion. Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy is a rare dominant autosomal disease resulting from a heterozygous missense mutation in the LMnA gene, known as LPF type 2 (Dunnigan variant), which encodes the nuclear protein A/C-type lamin. It is characterized by the progressive disappearance of the subcutaneous adipose tissue in the limbs, gluteal region, abdomen, and trunk, with onset in puberty, followed by fat accumulation in other areas such as the face, chin, labia majora, and intra-abdominal region, leading to hypertrophy that may mimic the Cushing’s syndrome phenotype. Affected patients display marked insulin resistance and may consequently develop diabetes mellitus, acanthosis nigricans, hirsutism, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Conclusion: This case report highlights the importance of suspecting Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy in clinical practice. Early clinical diagnosis allows for measures that minimize the severe metabolic disorders associated with this disease and, consequently, these adolescents’ self-esteem issues.

Background: Green tea has been used as a daily beverage for several years. Anti-inflammatory effect of tea has also been depicted in different papers. Therefore we had set forward this study to examine the potential anti- inflammatory activity of green tea in small intestine mucositis experimental models. Aims: Evaluation of anti- inflammatory effects of green tea on mice. Materials and Methods: Green tea decoction (20%) was prepared by soaking 20 g of green tea in 100 ml boiled water separately, soaked for 2 minutes and thereafter filtered. In- flammatory activity was induced using methotrexate (2.75 g/kg/24 h sc), and a protecting effect of mucositis con- dition was investigated by vitamin E and Camellia sinensis decoction. Study Design: An experimental study was approved by an Animal Ethical Commitee. Results: Green tea decoction (20%) has shown significant anti-in- flammatory effects (65% and 70%) on methotrexate-induced acute mucositis model. In villous atrophy Green tea decoction (10% and 20%) has shown no protecting action at different intestinal segments. But at intestinal crypt hyperplasia, green tea decoction has shown 65.74%, as compared to mucositis group. An increase of apoptotic bodies were acchieved at MTX group, CS reduced this occurrence. Conclusion: Taken together, our data indi- cate that green tea (20%) has a potential anti-inflammatory compared vitamin E antioxidant action and cor- roborates with the current trend of tea being promoted as “health drink”. However more pharmacological and biochemical assays is necessary to elucidate mechanisms.

Background: Cystinosis is a multisystemic autosomal recessive deficiency of the lysosomal membrane transporter protein (cystinosin) caused by mutations in CTnS gene. Objective: This study summarizes the Portuguese experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with this rare disease over the past few years and reports recurrent mutations in the CTnS gene. Methods: Unrelated patients from different pediatric and adult hospitals all over Portugal with non-nephrotic proteinuria, hypercalciuria, hypokalemia impaired proximal reabsorption of amino acids, glycosuria and hypophosphatemia, suggestive of a Fanconi syndrome and ocular problems, were studied. Intra-leukocyte cystine levels were determined and molecular analysis was performed, to determine the presence or absence of the 57-kb deletion in CTnS, followed by direct sequencing of the coding exons of CTnS. Results: From 1998 to 2017, twenty-one cystinotic patients were biochemically diagnosed. From the remaining seventeen (four deceased), eleven were studied for CTnS gene. Five out of eleven patients were homozygous for the 57-kb deletion (10/22;45.5%), and other five were compound heterozygous for this variant (15/22;68.2%). The other mutations found were p.Q128X (c.721 C>T;2/22), p.S139F (c.755 C>T;4/22) and c.18-21delGACT (p.T7FfsX7;1/22). All of these seventeen cystinotic patients are in treatment. Approximately 84% are adults, 16% are young children, and 54.5% are kidney transplant recipient. Conclusions: The authors would like to emphasize the importance of first screening for the 57-kb deletion since it is very common in our population. This genetic study is the first in our country and it could be the basis for future genetic counseling in Portuguese population.
