Triatominae species are considered the main vectors of chagas disease or American Trypanosomiasis. In Venezuela, the principal vectors are Rhodnius prolixus （Stal, 1959） and Triatoma m.culata （Erichson, 1848）, which are belonged to the tribe Rhodniini and Triatomini, respectively. The head conformation and size development of these species can reflect ontogenetic changes which contribute with the vectors biology studies, as well to support of instars determination. The goal of the paper is to the application of geometric morphometric techniques for describing head conformation and size of instars of these species. We photographed 140 heads in R. prolixus： First instar （I： 16）, second instar （II： 17）, third instar （III： 18）, fourth instar （IV： 21）, fifth instar （V： 21）, adult female （F： 26） and adult males （m： 21）; in T. m.culata heads of 136 specimens were photographed,I： 20, II： 17, III： 26, IV： 15, V： 19, F： 20 and m： 19. Landmark coordinate （x, y） configurations were registered and aligned by Generalized Procrustes analysis. covariance analyses were implemented with proportions of re-classified groups and mANOVA. Statistical analyses of variance found not significant differences in head isometric size （Kruskal-Wallis） among IV and V instars in both species. The a posteriori re-classification was almost perfect in R. prolixus （82%） and T. m.culata （86%）; the main head differences occurs in antenniferous tubercles, postocular and preocular. Our study using quantitative tools for describing the shape differences contributes to explain the morphology variability and development of chagas disease vectors.

How do greenhouse gas emissions vary with biofertilizer type and soil temperature and moisture in a tropical grassland?

Greenhouse gases are known to play an important role in global *** this study,we determined the effects of selected soil and climate variables on nitrous oxide(N2O),methane(cH4),and carbon dioxide(cO2)emissions from a tropical grassland fertilized with chicken slurry,swine slurry,cattle slurry,and cattle *** N2O emissions did not differ between treatments and varied from 29.26 to 32.85 mg N m^-***,cumulative cH4 emissions were not significantly different among the treatments and ranged from 6.34 to 57.73 mg cH4 m^-*** and compost application induced cO2 emissions that were significantly different from those in the control *** cH4 conversion factors measured were 0.21%,1.39%,4.39%,and 5.07%for cattle compost,chicken slurry,swine slurry,and cattle slurry,respectively,differing from the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change(IPcc).The fraction of added Nemitted as N2O was 0.39%,which was lower than the IPcc default value of 2%.Our findings suggest that N2O emissions could be mitigated by replacing synthetic fertilizer sources with either biofertilizer or *** results indicate the following:N2O emission was mainly controlled by soil temperature,followed by soil moisture and then soil NH^"content;cH4 fluxes were mainly controlled by soil moisture and chamber headspace temperature;and cO2 fluxes were mainly controlled by chamber headspace temperature and soil moisture.

Bread enriched with resveratrol:Influence of the delivery vehicles on its bioactivity

Optimization of InAs/GaAs quantum-dot structures and application to 1.3-μm mode-locked laser diodes

The self-assembled growth of InAs/GaAs quantum dots by molecular beam epitaxy is conducted by optimizing several growth parameters, using a one-step interruption method after island formation. The dependence of photoluminescence on areal quantum-dot density is systematically investigated as a function of InAs deposition, growth temperature and arsenic pressure. The results of this investigation along with time-resolved photoluminescence measurements show that the com- bination of a growth temperature of 490℃, with a deposition rate of 0.02 mL/s, under an arsenic pressure of 1×10^-6 Torr （1 Torr = 1.33322×10^2 Pa）, provides the best compromise between high density and the photoluminescence of quantum dot structure, with a radiative lifetime of 780 ps. The applicability of this 5-layer quantum dot structure to high-repetition-rate pulsed lasers is demonstrated with the fabrication and characterization of a monolithic InAs/GaAs quantum-dot passively mode-locked laser operating at nearly 1300 nm. Picosecond pulse generation is achieved from a two-section laser, with a 19.7-GHz repetition rate.

Understanding the factors shaping species＇ distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aims were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species may vary spatially and/or may depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discriminate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estimated with the instability index included in the R pack- age SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes： 1） each river basin where the species is present （local）; 2） all river basins where the species is present （regional）; and 3） the whole Earth （global）. We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclimatic and topographic variables. Factors associated with tempera- ture and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the smaller considered extent. Altitude and a mix of factors associated with temperature and precipitation were more important when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the importance of factors, both between species and within species and from region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in importance toward the equator.

Association between EGF +61A/G polymorphism and gastric cancer in caucasians

AIm: To investigate the association between epidermal growth factor (EGF) +61A/G polymorphism and susceptibility to gastric cancer, through a cross-sectional study. mETHODS: Polymerase chain reaction resctriction fragment lenght polymorphism analyses were used to genotype EGF +61 in 207 patients with gastric lesions (162 patients with gastric adenocarcinomas, 45 with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia) and 984 controls. All subjects were caucasian. RESULTS: Genotype distribution was 23.5% for GG and 76.5% for GA/AA in the control group, 18.4% for GG and 68.6% for GA/AA in the entire group with gastric lesions and 17.9% for GG and 82.1% for GA/AA in the group with gastric adenocarcinoma. No statistically significant associations were found between EGF +61 variants and risk for developing gastric cancer [odds ratios (OR) = 1.41, 95% confidence intervals (cI): 0.90-2.21, P = 0.116]. However, the stratification of individuals by gender revealed that males carrying A alleles (EGF +61A/G or AA) had an increased risk for developing gastric cancer as compared to GG homozygous males (OR = 1.55, 95% cI: 1.05-2.28, P = 0.021). cONcLUSION: In summary, we found that males who were A carriers for EGF +61 had an increased risk for developing gastric cancer. This result may be explained by the suggestion that women secrete less gastric acid than men.

Synergism Effect between Phenolic metabolites and Endogenous Antioxidants in Terms of Antioxidant Activity

Polyphenolic compounds, widely distributed in plant kingdom, have been exhaustively studied for their bioactive properties specially antioxidant activity. However, they are extensively metabolized by human organism and the resulting metabolites are largely responsible for their effects. Furthermore, they may interact with the endogenous antioxidant network being this possibility scarcely studied. Plasma antioxidant network encompasses antioxidant enzymes and other substances such as uric acid. In addition, ascorbic acid is the major compound representing water soluble compartment both in foods and human body. The interaction of this vitamin with phenolic compound is largely unexplored. This work aims to study if there is a synergic effect between phenolic metabolites and main antioxidants (uric and ascorbic acid). For this purpose, the antioxidant activity was evaluated in terms of ORAc (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) and FRAP (ferricreducing antioxidant power) as these tests involved either HAT (Hydrogen Atom Transfer) or SET (Single Electron Transfer) m.chanisms. Additionally, a kinetic studied was developed to test if the rate constant presented a synergic effect. Protocatechuic acid, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic acid and 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid were selected as they were metabolites of polyphenol compounds such as anthocyanins, quercetin, neohesperidin, chlorogenic acid and hesperetin present in wines, orange and strawberries. A synergic effect was proved for the combination of ascorbic acid with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, both in terms of antioxidant activity and potent increase of velocity of the antioxidant reaction that took place.

As sessile organisms, plants are exposed to pathogen invasions and environmental fluctuations. To overcome the challenges of their surroundings, plants acquire the potential to sense endogenous and exogenous cues, resulting in their adaptability. Hence, plants have evolved a large collection of plasma membrane-resident receptors, including REcEPTOR-LIKE KINASEs(RLKs) and REcEPTOR-LIKE PROTEINs(RLPs) to perceive those signals and regulate plant growth,development, and immunity. The ability of RLKs and RLPs to recognize distinct ligands relies on diverse categories of extracellular domains evolved. co-regulatory receptors are often required to associate with RLKs and RLPs to facilitate cellular signal transduction. REcEPTOR-LIKE cYTOPLASm.c KINASEs(RLcKs) also associate with the complex, bifurcating the signal to key signaling hubs, such as mITOGEN-AcTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE(mAPK) cascades, to regulate diverse biological processes. Here, we discuss recent knowledge advances in understanding the roles of RLKs and RLPs in plant growth, development, and immunity, and their connection with co-regulatory receptors, leading to activation of diverse intracellular signaling pathways.
