Treating protein-rich wastewater using cost-effective and simple-structured single-stage reactors presents several *** this study,we applied an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(AnSBR)to treat protein-rich wastewater from a *** focused on identifying the key factors influencing the removal of chemical oxygen demand(COD)and the settling performance of the *** AnSBR achieved a maximum total COD removal of 90%,a protein degradation efficiency exceeding 80%,and a COD to methane conversion efficiency of over 70%at organic loading rates of up to 6.2 g COD L^(-1)d^(-1).We found that the variations in both the organic loading rate within the reactor and the hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank had a significant effect on COD *** hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank and the reactor,which determined the ammonification efficiencies and the residual carbohydrate concentrations in the reactor liquid,affected the sludge ***,the genus Clostridium sensu stricto 1,known as protein-and lipids-degraders,was predominant in the *** analysis showed a significant correlation between the core microbiome and ammonification efficiency,highlighting the importance of protein degradation as the governing process in the *** results will provide valuable insights to optimise the design and operation of AnSBR for efficient treatment of protein-rich wastewater.

Early detection of tomato bacterial canker by reflectance indices

Early detection of infected asymptomatic plants could prevent the dissemination of tomatobacterial canker throughout the crop and, thus, reduce associated economic losses. Reflectance spectroscopy has been proposed for the detection of diseases in plants, mainlycaused by foliar fungal pathogens. In contrast, bacterial canker is a vascular disease thatdoes not produce visible foliar symptoms until it is too late to avoid contagion to otherplants. The effects of the disease on the conductivity of the xylem have an impact onthe water content of the leaves;initially, a subtle effect that cannot be assessed with thenaked eye but can be evaluated by reflectance spectroscopy. The objective of this workwas to identify indices, based on the reflectance spectral signature of the plants, for thedetection of tomato plants affected by bacterial canker prior to the appearance of symptoms. To verify that the proposed methodology is applicable to a broad range of tomatogenotypes, two experiments were carried out with different tomato cultivars grown in potsand another on the ground in a greenhouse. Plants were inoculated with the pathogenicbacteria and the reflectance spectrum of the apical leaflet of two leaves per plant wereobtained before symptoms expression;several spectral indices were calculated from thereflectance spectra. Three indices, of the shortwave-infrared zone, allowed the detectionof bacterial canker inoculated plants in a fast and non-destructive way, up to one weekbefore symptoms were visible: Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Simple Ratioof Water Index (SRWI) and Water Index 1 180 (WI1180). Our research demonstrates, forthe first time, the usefulness of spectral indices sensitive to water content for the identifi-cation of diseased plants. These indices arise as a promising tool for the early detection ofvascular plant diseases, that could be integrated into sustainable management plans.

Sub-chronic effects of a Phthirusa pyrifolia aqueous extract on reproductive function and comparative hormone levels in male rats

Objective: To explore the effects of aqueous extract from Phthirusa pyrifolia leaves(67 mg/kg body weight for 12 days) on the reproductive function of male Wistar rats through oral ***: Animals(n = 30), aged 13 weeks and weighing(378.5 ± 5.0) g, were housed in a vivarium under controlled environmental conditions [photoperiod of 12 h light/dark,temperature of(23 ± 1)C] and were fed standard rations ad libitum. The experiment ran for 12 days, wherein animals were divided into three groups: negative control(n = 6)received water, positive control(n = 12) with finasteride at a concentration of 1.0 mg/kg;and a test group(n = 12) submitted to aqueous extract. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed and submitted to ***: The morphological results of the testes showed that the aqueous extract induced significant changes in the diameter and cross-sectional area of the seminiferous tubules as well as the thickness of the seminiferous epithelium. Furthermore, the extract was able to abruptly decrease testosterone concentrations by about 81.88% in the treated group when compared with the negative control,(47.0 ± 4.8) ng/d L and(255.0 ± 2.0) ng/d L,respectively, and 76.8%,(211.0 ± 8.7) ng/d L, when compared with finasteride. However,the extract causes neither liver damage nor impairment of renal ***: These results suggest that the high amounts of flavonoids shown to be in the extract may be responsible for its hepato-protective effects and suggest a possible decrease in the libido and reproduction of rats.

Successful double fertilization and subsequent seed development in flowering plants requires the delivery of two sperm cells, transported by a pollen tube, into the embryo sac of an ovule. The embryo sac cells tightly control synergid cell death, and as a result the polyspermy block. Arabinogalactan proteins are highly glycosylated proteins thought to be involved in several steps of the reproductive process. We show that JAGGER, Arabinogalactan Protein 4, is an important molecule necessary to prevent the growth of multiple pollen tubes into one embryo sac in Arabidopsis thaliana. In jagger, an AGP4 knockout mutant, the pistils show impaired pollen tube blockage as a consequence of the survival of the persistent synergid. JAGGER seems to be involved in the signaling pathway that leads to a blockage of pollen tube attraction. Our results shed light on the mechanism responsible for preventing polyspermy in Arabidopsis and for safe- guarding successful fertilization of all ovules in one pistil, ensuring seed set and the next generation.

Conjugated luminescent polymers and oligomers, exhibiting stimulated emission(SE), are dispersed in polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), films and optical fibers,either by blending or upon copolymerisation. With this PMMA doping, we aim to achieve gain and ultrafast optical switching. The modification of the dopant's chemical structure allows the tuning of the SE spectral region. Furthermore, we aim to achieve dopant chain isolation while maximising their concentration. In this paper, we present an overview of the research done in this area in the context of the European Union(EU)-funded research project “plastic optical fibers with embedded active polymers for data communications——POLYCOM”.

Purines have a recognized importance as intercellular mes- sengers. These molecules play an important role in the de- velopment and maintenance of the central nervous system （CNS）, as well as in its response to pathological conditions. Both adenine and guanine-based purines can be released from astrocytes, where they play a relevant role as extracel- lular signaling molecules. Particularly, the nucleoside gua- nosine has been proposed as an extracellular molecule that regulates the response of CNS to damage. Following injury, this nucleoside attains high concentrations in the extracel- lular space, where it activates multiple signaling pathways.

Purification,characterization and antiproliferative activity of L-asparaginase from Aspergillus oryzae CCT 3940 with no glutaminase activity

Objective:To explore the anti-proliferative activity of purified L-asparaginase from Aspergillus oryzae CCT 3940(***).Methods:L-asparaginase was produced by submerged fermentation and purified to electrophoresis homogeneity by ionic exchanged chromatography in a fast protein liquid chromatographic *** purified enzyme was characterized and used for the antiproliferative assay against nine tumor cell lines and one non-tumor cell ***:The free glutaminase L-asparaginase was purified 28.6 fold.L-asparaginase showed high stability under physiological condition,remaining stable in the p H range7.0–8.0 after 1 h incubation at temperature range 30–45℃.The Km and Vmax values of purified L-asparaginase were estimated as 0.66 mmol/L and 313 IU/mL,*** purified enzyme could inhibit the growth of a broad range of human tumor cell lines at the concentrations ***,the enzyme from *** CCT 3940 could inhibit tumor growth of leukemia cell line(K562) with a total growth inhibition value of(3.2 ± 2.5) IU/mL and did not inhibit the non-carcinogenic human cell line growth at the concentrations ***:The sensitivity of the cells lines to purified L-asparaginase from *** CCT 3940 appeared to be concentration dependent affording a more significant decrease in cell growth than that observed for the commercial L-asparaginase from Escherichia *** L-asparaginase from *** CCT 3940 has a high potential for pharmaceutical exploitation in the treatment of leukemia.

Management of hepatitis C in patients with chronic kidney disease

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection is highly prevalent among chronic kidney disease(CKD) subjects under hemodialysis and in kidney transplantation(KT) recipients, being an important cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. The vast majority of HCV chronic infections in the hemodialysis setting are currently attributable to nosocomial transmission. Acute and chronic hepatitis C exhibits distinct clinical and laboratorial features, which can impact on managementand treatment decisions. In hemodialysis subjects, acute infections are usually asymptomatic and anicteric; since spontaneous viral clearance is very uncommon in this context, acute infections should be treated as soon as possible. In KT recipients, the occurrence of acute hepatitis C can have a more severe course, with a rapid progression of liver fibrosis. In these patients, it is recommended to use pegylated interferon(PEG-IFN) in combination with ribavirin, with doses adjusted according to estimated glomerular filtration rate. There is no evidence suggesting that chronic hepatitis C exhibits a more aggressive course in CKD subjects under conservative management. In these subjects, indication of treatment with PEG-IFN plus ribavirin relies on the CKD stage, rate of progression of renal dysfunction and the possibility of a preemptive transplant. HCV infection has been associated with both liver disease-related deaths and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients. Among those individuals, low HCV viral loads and the phenomenon of intermittent HCV viremia are often observed, and sequential HCV RNA monitoring is needed. Despite the poor tolerability and suboptimal efficacy of antiviral therapy in CKD patients, many patients can achieve sustained virological response, which improve patient and graft outcomes. Hepatitis C eradication before KT theoretically improves survival and reduces the occurrence of chronic graft nephropathy, de novo glomerulonephritis and post-transplant diabetes mellitus.
