Al.otranspl.ntation is hel.ful.in order to maintain the l.fe in some cases, but immunosuppression causes col.ateral.effects. In this study, we were reporting the resul.s of al.ografts in l.ndrace pigs, which were impl.nted on col.agen-generator devices. After 2 weeks of impl.ntation, the devices were carried out to assess al.ograft viabil.ty at 30, 60 and 90 days post impl.nt. The impl.nted cel.s were isl.ts of l.ngerhans and the aim was to prove their presence by immunohistochemistry for insul.n and gl.cagon. The resul.s were positive at 30, 60 and 90 days post impl.nt. It demonstrated that the col.agen-generator device permits the cel. viabil.ty without using anti-rejected drugs or immunomodul.ting cel.s.

Objectives: This research work intends to cl.rify the rol. of artificial.sal.va, in particul.rl. the rol. of mucin, a sal.vary protein, on the surface properties and adhesion abil.ty of Candida spp. oral.cl.nical.isol.tes to abiotic surfaces. Methods: Four oral.cl.nical.isol.tes of Candida spp. were used: two Candida al.icans strains (AC;AM) and two Candida parapsil.sis strains (AD;AM2). The strains were isol.ted from patients using oral.prosthesis. The microorganisms were cul.ured in the absence or presence of mucin and artificial.sal.va, and their adhesion to an abiotic surface (coated with mucin and artificial.sal.va) was eval.ated. Resul.s: The presence of mucin per se onto the abiotic surface decreased the adhesion of al. strains, al.hough the combination of mucin with artificial.sal.va had reduced this effect. No direct correl.tion between adhesion and the surface free energies of adhesion of the microorganisms was found. Significance: Candida spp. were human commensal.microorganisms that became pathogenic when the host immune defenses were compromised. Medical.devices were col.nized by Candida spp. particul.rl., oral.prostheses, which might l.ad to the degradation of the prostheses and systemic infections. The sal.vary secretions that constantl. cover the oral.cavity influenced Candida spp. adhesion process. Therefore, it was important to understand the interactions between Candida spp., sal.vary proteins and the characteristic of oral.prosthesis when devel.ping material. for oral.prostheses.

Insul.r marine biotas are often richer in faunal.diversity than those from the open sea in the same geo- graphical.region. The existence of particul.r isl.nd effects were tested under pol.r conditions by compar- ing infaunal.benthic assembl.ges on Peter I Isl.nd with those of simil.r l.titudes in the open ocean at the Bel.ingshausen Sea and al.o from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsul.. Sampl.ng was carried out aboard the R/V Hesperides during the expedition named BENTART-2003 from 24 January to 3 March 2003. Benthic sampl.s were col.ected at 18 stations ranging from 90 to 2 044 m depth, using an USNEl.type box corer （BC） dredge. Representatives of 32 higher taxa of invertebrates were found. Univariate and mul.ivariate anal.ses reveal.d various patterns in the data. First, significant differences in pol.chaete abundance were detected between the stations l.cated in the open sea and the remaining sites （isl.nd pl.s mainl.nd sites）. Bival.e abundances were al.o distinct between isl.nd and mainl.nd sampl.ng sites. Sediment col.mns taken from the isl.nd seafloor exhibited the highest rate of bioturbation by the infauna. These findings confirm the model.that isl.nds devel.p distinct assembl.ges characterized by the enhancement of the benthic commu- nities even in col. waters. Several.abiotic factors were measured simul.aneousl. at the seafloor and al.ng the water col.mn to investigate faunal.distribution patterns. Significant correl.tions were found between the benthic assembl.ges and a combination of two environmental.variabl.s：＂isl.nd effect＂（measured as a categorical.variabl.） and the redox state of sediments. Richer and more compl.x benthic assembl.ges were found in Peter I Isl.nd＇s sea bottom, whereas the more depauperate bottoms remained in the open sea.

Objective： The study eval.ated the intel.ectual.capacity of chil.ren who l.ve in areas that were E （exposed） or NE （not exposed） to environmental.pol.ution. Method： 246 students between the ages of 8 and 11 years and 8 months were eval.ated. Data were col.ected between May and June 2010 using a semi-structured questionnaire to examine factors that were rel.ted to compromised intel.ectual.capacity. Intel.ectual.capacity was eval.ated with Raven＇s Col.red Progressive Matrices Scal.. The intel.ectual.capacity of chil.ren who l.ve in areas that were exposed or not exposed was compared using chi-squared tests and raw and adjusted anal.ses were conducted using Poisson regression. Resul.s： The general.occurrence of intel.ectual.impairment was 28.9%, with 22.0% in the non-exposed area and 36.1% in the exposed area （p = 0.01）. The outcome was associated with the fol.owing： a l.ck of companionship （RP = 2.77; p 〈 0.00）, maternal.education of l.ss than five years （RP = 2.13; p 〈 0.00）, the mother not being Caucasian （RP = 1.57;p 〈 0.00）, residing in an exposed area （RP = 1.88;p 〈 0.00）, and nutritional.risk/mal.utrition （RP = 2.83; p 〈 0.00）. Concl.sions： The resul.s showed a high occurrence of intel.ectual.impairment and a significant difference between the environmental.areas. Additional.research is needed to improve the understanding of several.resul.s. The town＇s priorities shoul. incl.de efforts rel.ted to environmental.heal.h.

Study popul.tion: Medical.students enrol.ed in Spain (n = 34000) in the university academic year 2010-2011. Sampl. size: A sampl. of 9598 students stratified by geographical.area and academic year. Instrument used to measure attitude: A val.dated questionnaire (PCID-DVH RIOS) was sel.-administered and compl.ted anonymousl.. Data col.ection procedure: Randoml. sel.cted medical.school.. The questionnaire was appl.ed to each academic year at compul.ory sessions. Statistical.anal.sis: Student´s t test, χ2 test and l.gistic regression ***: The compl.tion rate was 95.7% (n = 9275). 89% (n = 8258) were in favor of rel.ted l.D, and 32% (n = 2937) supported unrel.ted l.D. The fol.owing variabl.s were associated with having a more favorabl. attitude: (1) age (P = 0.008); (2) sex (P l.area (P = 0.013); (5) bel.eving in the possibil.ty of needing a transpl.nt onesel. in the future (P l.ving kidney donation (P l.ver segment from a famil. member if one were needed (P l. (P l.ruistic nature; and (12) fear of the possibl. mutil.tion of the body after donation (P l.SION: Spanish medical.students have a favorabl. attitude toward l.D.
