Hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc)is the fifth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death *** data suggest that the epidemiology of Hcc is changing;while the frequencies of hepatitis B virus(HBV)-and hepatitis c virus(HcV)-related Hcc are progressively decreasing owing to the development of nucleo(t)side-based therapies and directly acting antiviral agents,respectively,the frequency of cryptogenic Hcc continues to increase(15–30%of cases)(1).The rise of cryptogenic Hcc is mainly related to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)(1,2).NAFLD encompasses a wide spectrum of liver injuries,ranging from steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),which may progress to cirrhosis(1,3).

AMP-activated kinase （AMPK）, a protein that regulates energy balance and metabolism, has recently been identified in boar spermatozoa where regulates key functional sperm processes essential for fertilization. This work＇s aims are AMPK identification, intracellular localization, and their role in human spermatozoa function. Semen was obtained from healthy human donors. Sperm AMPK and phospho-Thr172-AMPK were analyzed by Western blotting and indirect immunofluorescence. High- and low-quality sperm populations were separated by a 40%-80% density gradient. Human spermatozoa motility was evaluated by an Integrated Semen analysis System （ISAS） in the presence or absence of the AMPK inhibitor compound c （cc）. AMPK is localized along the human spermatozoa, at the entire acrosome, midpiece and tail with variable intensity, whereas its active form, phospho-Thr172-AMPK, shows a prominent staining at the acrosome and sperm tail with a weaker staining in the midpiece and the postacrosomal region. Interestingly, spermatozoa bearing an excess residual cytoplasm show strong AMPK staining in this subcellular compartment. Both AMPK and phospho-Thr172-AMPK human spermatozoa contents exhibit important individual variations. Moreover, active AMPK is predominant in the high motility sperm population, where shows a stronger intensity compared with the low motility sperm population. Inhibition of AMPK activity in human spermatozoa by cc treatment leads to a significant reduction in any sperm motility parameter analyzed： percent of motile sperm, sperm velocities, progressivity, and other motility coefficients. This work identifies and points out AMPK as a new molecular mechanism involved in human spermatozoa motility. Further AMPK implications in the clinical efficiency of assisted reproduction and in other reproductive areas need to be studied.

In Brazil, intense coal exploitation activities have led to environmental deterioration, including soil mortification, water contamination, loss of ecosystem, and atmospheric contamination. In addition,considerable quantities of sulfur-rich residues are left behind in the mining area; these residues pose grave environmental issues as they undergo sulfide oxidation reactions. When sulfur oxides come in contact with water, extreme acid leachate is produced with great proportions of sulfate, and hazardous elements(HEs), which are identified as coal drainage(cMD). cMD is an environmental pollution challenge, particularly in countries with historic or active coal mines. To prevent cMD formation or its migration, the source must be controlled; however, this may not be feasible at many locations. In such scenarios, the mine water should be collected, treated, and discharged. In this study, data from 2005 to2010 was gathered on the geochemistry of 11 cMD discharges from ten different mines. There are several concerns and questions on the formation of nanominerals in mine acid drainage and on their reactions and interfaces. The detailed mineralogical and geochemical data presented in this paper were derived from previous studies on the coal mine areas in Brazil. Oxyhydroxides, sulfates, and nanoparticles in these areas possibly go through structural transformations depending on their size and formation conditions. The geochemistry of Fe-precipitates(such as jarosite, goethite, and hematite) existent in the cMD-generating coal areas and those that could be considered as a potential source of hazardous elements(HEs)(e.g., cr) were also studied because these precipitates are relatively stable in extremely low pH conditions. cathode catalysts for direct alcohol fuel cells(DAFcs) must have high catalytic activity for the oxy-gen reduction reaction(ORR), low cost, and high tolerance to the presence of methanol or ethanol. Pt is the benchmark catalyst for this application owing to its excellent electrocatalytic activity, but its high cost and low tolerance to the organic fuel permeating through the membrane have hindered the commercialization of DAFcs. Herein we present a facile synthesis route to obtain organic fuel-tolerant Zr- and Ta-based catalysts supported on carbon. This method consists of a simple precipitation of metal precursors followed by a heat treatment. X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed that the obtained samples were crystalline ZrO 2-x and Na2Ta8O21-x having crystallite sizes of 26 and 32 nm, respectively. The thermal treatment effectively increased the activity of the catalysts to-wards the ORR, although further optimization is necessary. Both catalysts exhibited a high tolerance to the presence of methanol with only a moderate reduction in ORR activity even at high methanol concentration(0.5 mol/L).

The aim of this work is to boost the combined hydrogen and added-values compounds generation(acetaldehyde, acetic acid and ethyl acetate) through ethanol electrochemical reforming using bimetallic anodes. In particular, the influence of the secondary metal on the electrochemical performance as well as on the product distribution was studied. For that purpose, Pt X/c electrocatalysts(where X corresponds to cu, co, Ni and Ru) were synthesized by the modified polyol method and tested in both half-cell and proton exchange membrane(PEM) cell configurations. characterization results showed that incorporation of Ni and co into the Pt matrix enhances the morphological properties of the material, providing smaller crystallite sizes, higher active surface areas and hence, better dispersion when comparing to Ru and cu-based electrocatalysts. Ethanol oxidation reaction(EOR) was evaluated by cyclic, linear voltammetry and chronopotentiometry assays. Pt co/c and Pt Ni/c exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity at high polarization levels, which translate into an improvement of more than 30%(up to 1050 m A cm^(-2)) in the hydrogen production and chemical yields. On the other hand, Pt Ru/c results more advantageous for a lower potential interval(cetic acid production despite sacrificing ethanol conversion. Pt cu/c presented the lowest results in both electrochemical performance and product distribution. Such differences in the electrochemical performance can be rationalized in terms of the synergistic effect between both metals(particle size distribution, grade of dispersion and hydrophilic behavior), which demonstrate that the incorporation of a different secondary metal plays an essential role in the EOR development.
