Distribution of licensed acupuncturists and educational institutions in the United States at the start of 2023,during the late stage of the COVID-19 pandemic

This study was conducted to identify the number and density of active licensed acupuncturists(LAcs),as well as the number of accredited schools in acupuncture and Oriental medicine(AOM),as of January 1,2023,in the United States(U.S.).The number of active LAcs as of January 1,2023 was 34,524,potentially33,364 after removing license duplication in multiple states,among which the largest three states were California(with 7317 LAcs[21.19%of the total]),New York(5024[14.55%])and Florida(2644[7.66%]).The total number of LAcs decreased by 8.87%from 2018,and fell short of our projected number of LAcs in 2023 by 9037,or 20.75%.The overall LAc density in the *** as the number of LAcs per 100,000 populationDwas 10.36,less than in *** were 56 active,accredited AOM schools which offered a total of 147 programs(121 at the level necessary for licensing[entry-level],12 for an advanced practicing degree[advanced-level],and 14 for certifications).Broken down further,offerings included 50 master's degrees in acupuncture,40 master's degrees in Oriental medicine,31 entry-level doctorate degrees(10 in acupuncture and 21 in acupuncture plus Chinese herbal medicine),and 12advanced-level doctorate degrees in *** certification programs included one in East-Asian Medical Bodywork and 13 in *** these schools in 2023,institutions in the West and East Coast states comprised 67.86%(decreased from 77.42%in 2018)of the national ***,Florida and Illinois represented 39.29%.There were 48 jurisdictions with acupuncture practice laws in *** data suggests that the acupuncture profession in the *** been significantly impacted during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Combined influence of basal media and fibroblast growth factor on the expansion and differentiation capabilities of adipose-derived stem cells

Background: Interest in adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) has increased in recent years due to their multi-linagedifferentiation capabilities. While much work has been done to optimize the differentiation media, few studies havefocused on examining the influence of different expansion media on cell behavior. In this study, three basal media(low glucose Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM), high glucose DMEM and DMEM-F12) supplementedwith or without fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF) were examined to assess their suitability for expanding ***: Flow cytometry, colony-forming unit assays (CFU-Fs) and differentiation assays were utilized to study cellbehavior. High glucose media CFU-Fs produced fewest colonies while the addition of FGF increased colony *** passage 2, the majority of cells were positive for CD44, 45, 73, 90 and 105 and negative for CD14, 31 and 45,indicating a mesenchymal phenotype. A sub-population of CD34 positive cells was present among passage 2 cells;however, by passage 4 the cells were negative for CD34. FGF has a negative effective on passage 4 ASC adipogenesisand high glucose media plus FGF-enhanced osteogenic capacity of passage 4 ASCs. FGF supplemented basal mediawere most suitable for chondrogenesis. High glucose media plus FGF appeared to be the most beneficial for primingASCs to induce a keratocyte ***: These findings demonstrate the reciprocal effect FGF and basal media have on ASCs. This research hasimplications for those interested regenerating bone, cartilage, cornea or adipose tissues.

Gradients in predation risk in a tropical river system

The importance of predation risk as a key driver of evolutionary change is exemplified by the Northern Range in Trinidad, where research on guppies living in multiple parallel streams has pro- vided invaluable insights into the process of evolution by natural selection. Although Trinidadian guppies are now a textbook example of evolution in action, studies have generally categorized predation as a dichotomous variable, representing high or low risk. Yet, ecologists appreciate that community structure and the attendant predation risk vary substantially over space and time. Here, we use data from a longitudinal study of fish assemblages at 16 different sites in the Northern Range to quantify temporal and spatial variation in predation risk. Specifically we ask： 1） Is there evidence for a gradient in predation risk？ 2） Does the ranking of sites （by risk） change with the defi- nition of the predator community （in terms of species composition and abundance currency）, and 3） Are site rankings consistent over time？ We find compelling evidence that sites lie along a contin- uum of risk. However, site rankings along this gradient depend on how predation is quantified in terms of the species considered to be predators and the abundance currency is used. Nonetheless, for a given categorization and currency, rankings are relatively consistent over time. Our study sug- gests that consideration of predation gradients will lead to a more nuanced understanding of the role of predation risk in behavioral and evolutionary ecology. It also emphasizes the need to justify and report the definition of predation risk being used.

Thirty-eight Cases of Acute Pancreatitis in Pregnancy: A 6-year Single Center Retrospective Analysis

Summary： Thirty-eight pregnant inpatients with acute pancreatitis （AP） were retrospectively re- viewed from 2006 to 2012 in our hospital. The incidence of pregnancy-associated AP was 2.27%o. Most （78.95%） of the attack occurred in the third trimester. The median of APACHE II score was 6 and severe AP accounted for 31.58% （12 cases）. Primary diseases were absent in most cases （57.89%） The most common clinical presentations were abdominal pain （89.47%） and vomiting （68.42%）. Pleural effusion and ascites were found only in the third trimester. Elevated white blood cell count, amylase and lipase were commonly found in biochemical examinations. Eleven cases required inten- sive care in ICU and 21 cases received caesarean section. There were 2 maternal deaths and 12 fetal losses including 4 abortions. It is concluded that AP is a rare entity in pregnancy. The incidence of pancreatitis increases with the gestational age. However, the severity is not necessarily related with the pregnancy trimesters. The diagnosis is based on clinical presentations, laboratory tests and imag- ing examinations. Although the treatment strategy of a pregnant woman with pancreatitis is similar to the general non-pregnant patient with AP, a multidisciplinary team consisting of gastroenterologist, gastrointestinal surgeon, radiologist, obstetrician, and ICU doctor should be set up.

Rural implementation of the perioperative surgical home:A case-control study

BACKGROUND Perioperative surgical home(PSH)is a novel patient-centric surgical system developed by American Society of Anesthesiologist to improve outcomes and patient *** has proven success in large urban health centers by reducing surgery cancellation,operating room time,length of stay(LOS),and readmission ***,only limited studies have assessed the impact of PSH on surgical outcomes in rural *** To evaluate the newly implemented PSH system at a community hospital by comparing the surgical outcomes using a longitudinal case-control *** The research study was conducted at an 83-bed,licensed level-III trauma rural community hospital.A total of 3096 TJR procedures were collected retrospectively between January 2016 and December 2021 and were categorized as PSH and non-PSH cohorts(n=2305).To evaluate the importance of PSH in the rural surgical system,a case-control study was performed to compare TJR surgical outcomes(LOS,discharge disposition,and 90-d readmission)of the PSH cohort against two control cohorts[Control-1 PSH(C1-PSH)(n=1413)and Control-2 PSH(C2-PSH)(n=892)].Statistical tests including Chi-square test or Fischer’s exact test were performed for categorical variables and Mann-Whitney test or Student’s t-test were performed for continuous *** general linear models(Poisson regression and binomial logistic regression)were performed to fit adjusted *** The LOS was significantly shorter in PSH cohort compared to two control cohorts(median PSH=34 h,C1-PSH=53 h,C2-PSH=35 h)(P value<0.05).Similarly,the PSH cohort had lower percentages of discharges to other facilities(PSH=3.5%,C1-PSH=15.5%,C2-PSH=6.7%)(P value<0.05).There was no statistical difference observed in 90-d readmission between control and PSH ***,the PSH implementation reduced the 90-d readmission percentage(PSH=4.7%,C1-PSH=6.1%,C2-PSH=3.6%)lower than the national average 30-d readmission percentage which is 5.5%.The PSH system was effecti

Having a formal model of neural networks can greatly help in understanding and verifying their properties,behavior,and response to external factors such as disease and *** this paper,we adopt a formal model to represent neurons,some neuronal graphs,and their *** specific neuronal graphs are known for having biologically relevant structures and behaviors and we call them *** archetypes are supposed to be the basis of typical instances of neuronal information *** this paper we study six fundamental archetypes(simple series,series with multiple outputs,parallel composition,negative loop,inhibition of a behavior,and contralateral inhibition),and we consider two ways to couple two archetypes:(i)connecting the output(s)of the first archetype to the input(s)of the second archetype and(ii)nesting the first archetype within the second *** report and compare two key approaches to the formal modeling and verification of the proposed neuronal archetypes and some selected *** first approach exploits the synchronous programming language Lustre to encode archetypes and their couplings,and to express properties concerning their dynamic *** properties are verified thanks to the use of model *** second approach relies on a theorem prover,the Coq Proof Assistant,to prove dynamic properties of neurons and archetypes.
