We propose a fast and accurate automated algorithm to segment retinal pigment epithelium and internal limiting membrane layers from spectral domain optical coherence tomography(sDOcT) B-scan images. A hybrid algorithm, which combines intensity thresholding and graph-based algorithms, was used to process and analyze sDOcT radial scans(120 B scans) images obtained from twenty patients. The relative difference in position of the layers segmented by the proposed hybrid algorithm and by the clinical expert was 1.49% ± 0.01%. The processing time of the hybrid algorithm was 9.3 s for six B scans. Dice's coefficient of the hybrid algorithm was 96.7% ± 1.6%. The proposed hybrid algorithm for the segmentation of sDOcT images had good agreement with manual segmentation and reduced processing time.

AIM: To discuss important characteristics of the useof dental implants in posterior quadrants and the rehabilitation planning. METHODs: An electronic search of English articles was conducted on MEDLINE(PubM ed) from 1990 up to the period of March 2014. The key terms were dental implants and posterior jaws, dental implants/treatment planning and posterior maxilla, and dental implants/treatment planning and posterior mandible. No exclusion criteria were used for the initial search. clinical trials, randomized and non randomized studies, classical and comparative studies, multicenter studies, in vitro and in vivo studies, case reports, longitudinal studies and reviews of the literature were included in this review. REsULTs: One hundred and fifty-two articles met the inclusion criteria of treatment planning of dental implants in posterior jaw and were read in their entirety. The selected articles were categorized with respect to their context on space for restoration, anatomic considerations(bone quantity and density), radiographic techniques, implant selection(number, position, diameter and surface), tilted and pterygoid implants, short implants, occlusal considerations, and success rates of implants placed in the posterior region. The results derived from the review process were described under several different topic headings to give readers a clear overview of the literature. In general, it was observed that the use of dental implants in posterior region requires a careful treatment plan. It is important that the practitioner has knowledge about the theme to evaluate the treatment parameters. cONcLUsION: The use of implants to restore the posterior arch presents many challenges and requires a detailed treatment planning.

Purpose： The main goal of this study is to discover the scientific evolution of cancer-Related symptoms in complementary and Alternative Medicine research area, analyzing the articles indexed in the Web of science database from 1980 to ***/Methodology/Approach： A co-word science mapping analysis is performed under a longitudinal framework（1980 to 2013）. The documental corpus is divided into two subperiods,1980–2008 and 2009–2013. Thus, the performance and impact rates, and conceptual evolution of the research field are ***： According to the results, the co-word analysis allows us to identify 12 main thematic areas in this emerging research field： anxiety, survivors and palliative care,meditation, treatment, symptoms and cancer types, postmenopause, cancer pain, low back pain, herbal medicine, children, depression and insomnia, inflammation mediators, and lymphedema. The different research lines are identified according to the main thematic areas,centered fundamentally on anxiety and suffering prevention. The scientific community can use this information to identify where the interest is focused and make decisions in different *** limitation： several limitations can be addressed： 1） some of the complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies may not have been included; 2） only the documents indexed in Web of science are analyzed; and 3） the thematic areas detected could change if another dataset was *** implications： The results obtained in the present study could be considered as an evidence-based framework in which future studies could be ***/value： currently, there are no studies that show the thematic evolution of this research area.

The human placenta nourishes the growing fetus during pregnancy. The newly developing field of placenta analysis seeks to understand relationships between the health of a placenta and the health of the baby. Previous studies have shown that the median placental chorionic shape at term is round, and deviation from such prototypical shape is related to a decreased placental functional efficiency. In this study, we propose the use of a nearly-continuous shape descriptor termed signed deviation vector to systematically study the relationship between various maternal and fetal characteristics and the shape of the placental surface. The proposed shape descriptor measures the amount of deviation along with the direction of the deviation a placental shape has away from the shape of normality. Using Linear Discriminant Analysis, we can independently examine how much of the placental shape is affected by maternal, newborn, and placental characteristics. The results allow us to understand how significantly various maternal and fetal conditions affect the overall shape of the placenta growth. Though the current study is largely exploratory, the initial findings indicate significant relationships between shape of the placental surface and newborn’s birth weight as well as their gestational age.

This work aims to understand the inefficiency of nanoprecipitates to strengthen a weakly textured,polycrystalline Mg-Gd-Y-Zr *** experimental micromechanical approach consisting on micropillar compression combined with analytical electron microscopy is put in place to analyze the effect of nanoprecipitation on soft and hard basal slip and twinning in individual grains with different *** study shows that,in grains that are favorably oriented for basal slip(“soft”basal slip),aging leads to extreme localization due to the ability of basal dislocations to shear the nanoparticles,resulting overall in the softening of basal ***,in grains in which the c-axis is almost perpendicular to the compression axis,prismatic slip dominates deformation in the solid solution state and nanoprecipitation favors twinning due to the concomitant lattice solute ***,in grains oriented with their c-axis making an angle of about 5-7°with respect to the compression axis,which deform mainly by“hard”basal slip,precipitation leads to the strengthening of basal systems in the absence of obvious *** work reveals that the poor hardening response of the polycrystalline alloy is related to the capability of basal dislocations to shear the nanoparticles,in the absence of Orowan looping events,and to the associated basal slip localization.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers with a very poor prognosis. Recently, there has been a significant increase in research directed towards identifying potential biomarkers that can be used to diagnose and provide prognostic information for pancreatic cancer. These markers can be used clinically to optimize and personalize therapy for individual patients. In this review, we focused on 3 biomarkers involved in the DNA damage response pathway and the necroptosis pathway: chromodomainhelicase-DNA binding protein 5, chromodomain-helicaseDNA binding protein 7, and mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein. The aim of this article is to review present literature provided for these biomarkers and current studies in which their effectiveness as prognostic biomarkers are analyzed in order to determine their future use as biomarkers in clinical medicine. Based on the data presented, these biomarkers warrant further investigation,and should be validated in future studies.
