Antibacterial Activity of Psidium guajava Leaf and Stem Bark Extracts on Selected Bacteria in Ugbokolo, Benue State, Nigeria

Aim: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in researching and developing new antimicrobial agents from various sources to combat microbial resistance. The study was aimed at determining the phytochemical constituents and in vitro antibacterial activity of methanol and aqueous extracts of Psidium guajava leaves and stem bark on Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus sp. in Ugbokolo, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: The phytochemical screening of the plant materials for various bioactive components was conducted between July and December, 2019 using standard laboratory techniques. The extracts were purified using column chromatography. The identity of the test isolates were confirmed using morphological characteristics, gram stain, motility and appropriate biochemical tests such as indole, catalase, coagulase, triple sugar iron agar. The susceptibility of the isolates to each bioactive component was determined using the agar well diffusion method. The broth dilution method was employed for the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extracts. Results: The result of the study showed the presence of phenol, tannins, flavonoids and saponins as bioactive compounds. The antibacterial susceptibility of the isolates to aqueous and methanol extracts of leaf and stem bark of Psidium guajava varied significantly (P Staphylococcus aureus was the most susceptible isolate at 200 mg/ml concentration with average zone of inhibition of 13.05 mm for leaf extract and 15.34 mm for stem bark extract. Proteus sp. is the least susceptible with average zone of inhibition of 8.88 mm for the leaf extract and 12.36 mm for the stem bark extract respectively. 目的:探讨中药木尼孜其对GnRH-a所导致的低雌激素症状的缓解情况。方法:前瞻性地纳入了2020年1月至2021年10月在新疆医科大学第一附属医院妇科就诊的子宫腺肌病、子宫平滑肌瘤和子宫内膜异位症,且需要应用GnRH-a类药物治疗的病人共125例,随机分为两组。对照组(62例)采用GnRH-a常规治疗,于月经期第1～3天或手术后4～5天第一次注射GnRH-a,之后每28天注射1次,并嘱患者调整饮食、适当运动、适当日照。治疗组(63例)在对照组基础上,于第2次注射GnRH-a时开始口服木尼孜其1袋/次,3次/d,共口服2个月。记录各组患者的Kupperman评分、激素水平及不良事件的出现的频率。结果:1.在用中药前,两组患者的Kupperman评分没有显著差异性(P>0.05);用中药2月后,治疗组Kupperman评分较前明显降低(P0.05);用中药2月后,两组FSH、LH、E的差异仍无统计学意义(P>0.05)。3.两组不良反应发生率均低。结论:中药木尼孜其能够有效改善使用GnRH-a所致低雌激素症状,且无明显的药物不良反应,不增加雌激素水平,值得在临床上推广使用。其改善低雌激素症状的作用机制需行进一步研究。

Cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that easily coordinates to soft metal ions and grafts to noble metal surfaces. We report a simple synthetic approach for the production of chiral gold-cysteine polymeric nanoparticles soluble in water. Conjugation of cysteine with gold in a polymeric way, leading to;0 nm diameter nanoparticles, resulted in the generation of new characteristic circular dichroism（CD） signals in the region of 250–400 nm, whereas no CD signal changes were found with cysteine alone. We also investigate their nonlinear optical properties after two-photon absorption. Two-photon emission spectra and first hyperpolarizabilities, as obtained by the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique, of these particles are presented.

Sulfated zirconia(SZ)and two promoted 1% Mn/SZ catalysts which have been prepared via sol gel(Mn/SZ-S)and impregnation(Mn/SZ-I)methods were *** morphology of the catalysts was characterized by XRD,BET,NH3-TPD,ICP,SEM and FT-IR *** conversion of methanol to dimethyl ether and hydrocarbons was carried out in the temperature range of 120−300℃.The Mn/SZ-S showed the highest activity due to the high surface area with suitable *** optimum condition of Mn/SZ-S catalyst was investigated at 200℃ and LHSV of 0.02 h^−1 in a time range from 30 to 210 *** was found that the total conversion decreased from 80.18% to 53.26% at 210 *** reusability of this catalyst was studied at the optimum condition up till four cycles for 1 *** characterization of the reused catalyst showed a significant change in the structure and surface acidity due to the blockage of the surface acid sited by carbonaceous materials.

Dear editor,The incidence of emergency department(ED)visits from gastroparesis and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome has increased by two folds over the past decade.[1-3]Roldan et al[4]reported that patients with these conditions often have prolonged ED stays and are likely to be hospitalized because of the danger of dehydration and challenges inherent in relieving *** analgesia is a particularly troublesome treatment modality;these conditions are often chronic with frequent recurrences,and repeated opiate therapy can cause opioid dependency and narcotic bowel syndrome.[5]Haloperidol(HP)and droperidol,members of the butyrophenone class,have potent antidopaminergic activity in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.[6,7]Intramuscular administration of HP is being used increasingly in the ED to treat nausea,vomiting secondary to gastroparesis,[6]intractable vomiting,[8]and cyclical vomiting.

Fluoride is a key ingredient of many psychiatric drugs like fluoxetine(Prozac■Fluoxetine■).Pregnant women frequently use this drug as they suffer from depression and anxiety disorders during this *** is able to reach the fetus through the placenta and passes to the newborn through *** the present study,female Wistar rats were treated with 5,10,and 20 mg/L fluoxetine(containing 94% fluorides)from pregnancy day 10 to day *** delivery,the levels of the enzymatic antioxidants in the brain of their offspring at postnatal day 2 were *** results showed that,in all fluoxetine exposed groups compared with the control group,there was a significant decrease(P0.05)in the activity of malondialdehyde and creatine *** results suggest that fluoxetine may be a developmental neurotoxicant due to presence of fluoride hence must be used carefully during pregnancy.
