Twenty organic rich outcrop sam.les from.the Belait and Setap Shale form.tions in the Klias Peninsula area, West Sabah, were analysed by m.ans of organic petrology and geochem.cal techniques. The aim. of this study are to assess the type of organic m.tter, therm.l m.turity and established source rock characterization based prim.rily on Rock-Eval pyrolysis data. The shales of the Setap Shale Form.tion have TOC values varying from.0.6 wt%–1.54 wt% with a m.an hydrogen index (HI) of 60.1 m./g, whereas the shales of the Belait Form.tion have TOC values ranging from.0.36 wt%–0.61 wt% with a m.an (HI) of 38.2 m./g, indicating that both form.tions have TOC>0.5 wt% the m.nim.m.lim.t for hydrocarbon generation. The sam.les do not contain sufficient hydrogen-rich organic m.tter (types I, II and III) to be considered good quality source rocks. The kerogen of type II is predom.nantly of m.rine origin. This organic m.tter was deposited in clastic algal environm.nts. Geochem.cal data (Rock-Eval, Tm.x values ranging from.377–451℃ for shales of the Setap Shale Form.tion and ranging from.466–498℃ for shales of the Belait Form.tion, typical of high m.turity), indicate variable m.turation histories in both form.tions. The m.turation level varied from.the beginning to the peak stage of oil generation in the Setap Shale Form.tion and it has reached the over-m.ture level in the sam.les of the Belait Form.tion.

The black shale sam.les collected from.two Neogene form.tions in the Klias Peninsula area,West Sabah,have been assessed and characterized in details by gas chrom.tography,gas chrom.tography-m.ss spectrom.try and a variety of organic geochem.cal *** aim. of this study are to describe the characteristics of organic m.tter of these sedim.nts in term. of source/type of the organic m.tter,assess its therm.l m.turity and paleoenvironm.nt of deposition,based prim.rily on biom.rker *** results of both form.tions do not reveal significant differences within the rock *** gas chrom.togram. of the saturated hydrocarbon fractions of the Setap Shale and the Belait form.tions displayed m.nom.dal n-alkane distributions and nearly identical regular sterane com.ositions with a predom.nance of C27 regular *** are consistent with open m.rine depositional environm.nts dom.nated by m.rine biological *** related feature of these rock extracts is the presence of a high relative abundance of gam.acerane,indicating anoxic m.rine hypersaline source depositional *** relatively high abundance of com.on land plant-derived biom.rkers,such as bicadinanes and oleananes,is a clear indication of a m.jor terrigenous input to the source of the extractable organic *** predom.nance of oleanane biom.rkers in both form.tions is indicative of angiosperm.s input and Tertiary source *** high C29/C30 hopane ratios,m.derate developm.nt of C33-C35 hopanes,high abundance of tricyclic terpanes and a slight predom.nance of C27 regular sterane over C28 and C29 steranes are characteristic features tending to suggest a significant m.rine influence on these source rocks,thereby suggesting a m.xed source *** 22S/(22S+22R)C32 hopane ratio has reached equilibrium.and this is supported by the high m.turity level as indicated by the 22S/22SC31-33 extended hopane ratios and 20S/(20S+20R)C29 regular steranes ratios.

The X-ray fluorescence and ICP m.thods were used to analyze 60 outcrop sam.les of black shale, of which 15 were collected from.Belait, 15 from.the Setap Shale, 15 from.Tem.urong, and 15 from.the Trusm.di for- m.tions. The average com.ositions of the shales from.the study area are 64.62%, 63.95%, 62.32%, 63.84% SiO2, 1.84%, 2.14%, 2.04%, 1.99% m.O, 2.55%, 3.12%, 2.89%, 2.72% K2O, 0.32%, 0.30%, 0.32%, 0.53% CaO, 5.86%, 6.06%, 7.14%, 6.60% Fe2O3, 207×10-6, 180×10-6, 213×10-6, 200×10-6 Rb, and 56×10-6, 49×10-6, 50×10-6, 32×10-6 Sr for the Setap Shale, Tem.urong, Belait and Trusm.di sam.les, respectively. The high Rb/Sr ratios of 3.8, 3.7, 4.2, and 6.1 are attributed to the lowest contents of Sr due to reducing conditions prevailing. The high Rb/K ratio sug- gests either brackish m.rine or rapid deposition that prevented equilibrium.between Rb and K in the shales and m.- rine waters.

Understanding the com.lex spatio-tem.oral relationships between environm.ntal pollution and disease and identifying exposures to environm.ntal hazards in high-risk populations are essential elem.nts of an effective environm.ntal and public health m.nagem.nt program. m.dern com.uter technologies, such as geographic inform.tion system. (GIS), provide cost-effective tools for evaluating interventions and policies potentially affecting health outcom.s. m.litary activities during the occupation and subsequent liberation war at 1991 caused direct and indirect dam.ge to Kuwait’s environm.nt and ecosystem.. Geographic Inform.tion System. (GIS) provide a powerful tool in m.naging and analyzing spatial data. It has been applied successfully to large variety of fields, one field of particular interest is the field of disaster identification and m.tigation represent in the im.act of hydrocarbon pollution on soil degradation in burgan oil field, South Kuwait. It is well understood that hazard identification and land m.nagem.nt play a m.jor part in the reducing the im.act of natural disasters. This is a role GIS is well suited to especially when com.ined with field investigation work .This study highlights the high level achievem.nts of the environm.ntal assessm.nt for the oil contam.nated status in GC32 pipe line dry oil lake and wet oil lake, burgan oil field, state of Kuwait by using GIS application and field investigation including soil sam.ling, logging in order to determ.ne the m.gnitude of dam.ge, m.pping present day contam.nation boundaries, extent of contam.nation and volum. of contam.nated soil in the area of study. In fact, the study clearly indicates that the problem. persist even after 25 years although the lakes and lagoons that contained oil have been drained and m.ny of them.have dried out, their hazard potential has actually increased.

Sequence stratigraphy of the petroliferous Dariyan Form.tion (Aptian) in Qeshm.Island and offshore (southern Iran)

After sea level rises during the Early Cretaceous, upper parts of the Kham. Group sedim.nts （Fahliyan, Gadvan, and Dariyan Form.tions） deposited over Jurassic sedim.nts. The Lower Cretaceous （Aptian） Dariyan Form.tion （equivalent to the Shu＇aiba Form.tion and Hawar m.m.er of the Arabian Plate） carbonates, which have hydrocarbon reservoir potential, form.the upperm.st portion of the Kham. Group that unconform.bly overlays the Gadvan Form.tion and was unconform.bly covered by the Kazhdum. Form.tion and burgan sandstones. Detailed paleontological, sedim.ntological, and well log analysis were perform.d on seven wells from.Qeshm.Island and offshore in order to analyze the sequence stratigraphy of this interval and correlate with other studies of the Dariyan Form.tion in this region. According to this study, the Dariyan Form.tion contains 14 carbonate lithofacies, which deposited on a ram. system.that deepened in both directions （NE-wells 5, 6 and SWIwells 1, 2）. Sequence stratigraphy led to recognition of 5 Aptian third-order sequences toward the Bab Basin （SW-well 1） and 4 Aptian third-order sequences toward Qeshm.Island （NE-wells 5 and 6） so these areas show higher gam.a on the gam.a ray logs and probably have higher source rock potential. Other wells （wells 2-4 and 7） m.inly deposited in shallower ram. system. and contain 3 Aptian third-order sequences. On the other hand, rudstone and boundstone lithofacies of studied wells have higher reservoir potential and were deposited during Apt 3 and Apt 4 sequences of the Arabian Plate. The Dariyan Form.tion in Qeshm.Island （well 6） and adjacent well （well 5） was deposited in an intrashelf basin that should be classified as a new intrashelf basin in future Aptian paleogeographic m.ps. We interpret that salt-related differential subsidence, crustal warping, and reactivation of basem.nt faults of the Arabian Plate boundary were responsible for the creation of the intrashelf basin in the Qeshm.area.
