Control of volunteer adzuki bean in soybean

The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of various pre-emergence (PrE) and post-emergence (POST) herbicides for the control of volunteer adzuki bean (Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi) in soybean (Glycine max L.). Trials were conducted at two locations in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009. Experiments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with either five PrE or nine POST herbicides. Volunteer adzuki bean interference in soybean resulted in yield loss of up to 25%. Cloransulam-methyl, linuron, metribuzin, flumetsulam, and imazethapyr applied PrE provided up to 6, 24, 14, 8, and 0% control, respectively at 8 weeks after emergence (WAE), while acifluorfen, fomesafen, bentazon, thifensulfuron-methyl, cloransulam-methyl, imazethapyr, and imazethapyr plus bentazon applied POST provided 2, 2, 5, 34, 6, 4, and 12% control, respectively at 8 weeks after application (WAA). Generally, with the aforementioned herbicides, soybean yield was equivalent to the weedy control and soybean grain contamination with adzuki bean seed was consistently above the 1% maximum threshold. Chlorimuron-ethyl and glyphosate applied POST provided up to 84 and 94% visual control at 8 WAA, respectively, decreased adzuki bean density, biomass, and seed production, and generally decreased soybean contamination with adzuki bean below the 1% threshold. The only herbicides evaluated in this study that controlled volunteer adzuki bean in soybean were chlorimuron-ethyl (9 g ai.ha-1) and glyphosate (900 g ai.ha-1) applied POST. All the other PrE and POST herbicides evaluated did not provide adequate control of volunteer adzuki bean in soybean.

Traditional two-pass weed management strategies need to be compared with new strategies in glyphosate/dicamba-resistant soybean. Weed control, soybean yield, partial profitability and environmental impact (EI) were evaluated in glyphosate/dicamba-resistant soybean using dicamba applied alone or in a tank-mix with dimethenamid-P applied preemergence (PrE). Trials were conducted at three locations during 2014 and 2015. Several PrE herbicides provided excellent control of broadleaf and grass weeds. Dicamba provided > 91% control of broadleaf weeds, and the addition of dimethenamid-P improved grass control. All weed species at the trial locations were controlled > 94% following a postemergence (POST) application of glyphosate. Weed interference reduced soybean seed yield 33% where no herbicide was applied. A single POST application of glyphosate had the lowest EI. Several treatments improved early-season weed control and reduced early-season weed density and biomass compared to glyphosate and had similar EI values. In this study, there was no benefit to yield or partial profit by including a PrE herbicide for weed management;however, the inclusion of multiple modes-of-action in a herbicide program may reduce the selection for herbicide-resistant weeds.

Patients with clinically isolated syndromes suggestive of multiple sclerosis have evidence for abnormality in normal appearing grey matter detected using the magnetization transfer ratio (MTr), a quantitative MrI measure. One potential mechanism for the decreased grey matter MTr (GM MTr) observed is trans-synaptic morphological abnormality secondary to demyelinating lesions that are in an anatomically linked pathway but remote location. We investigated this potential association by studying the location of abnormalities using voxel-based analysis of GM MTr maps in a group of 80 patients studied within 6 months of presenting with isolated optic neuritis and compared the findings with those seen in 50 age-and sex-matched healthy controls. Occipital cortex and whole brain analysis comparing all optic neuritis patients and controls revealed a selective decrease of MTr bilaterally in the visual cortex in patients [Brodmann area (BA) 17]. Whole brain analysis of patients fulfilling the McDonald criteria for multiple sclerosis (n=20) showed a lower MTr compared to controls bilaterally in the visual cortex (BA 17/18), left hippocampus, bilateral superior temporal gyrus, bilateral lenticular nuclei and the right cerebellum. There was no significant difference in the percentage of grey matter between patients and controls in the regions of abnormal MTr detected in the visual cortex. The intrinsic MTr decrease seen in patients suggests that there are structural changes in the visual cortex following an attack of optic neuritis. Potential mechanisms for this include trans-synaptic neuronal degeneration and cortical synaptic morphological changes; such abnormalities may also contribute to MTr abnormalities observed in the normal appearing grey matter in multiple sclerosis.

Background: The McDonald criteria include MrI evidence for dissemination in space and dissemination in time for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in young adult patients who present with clinically isolated syndromes (CIS) typical of the disease. Although a major advance, the criteria have limited sensitivity for making an early diagnosis. Objective: To compare the performance of McDonald criteria and modified McDonald criteria for dissemination in space and time for assessing the development of clinically definite multiple sclerosis. Methods: McDonald criteria were modified using the combination of a less stringent definition for dissemination in space and allowing a new T2 lesion per se after three months as evidence for dissemination in time. Modified and McDonald criteria were applied in 90 CIS patients at baseline and at three month follow up scans. results: Both criteria were highly specific ( > 90%)but the modified criteria were more sensitive (77%v 46%) and more accurate (86%v 73%). Conclusions: These modified criteria should be evaluated in other CIS cohorts.
