Issues and mitigations of wind energy penetrated network:Australian network case study

Longest geographically connected Australian power system is undergoing an unprecedented transition,under the effect of increased integration of renewable energy systems. This change in generation mix has implications for the whole interconnected system designs, its operational strategies and the regulatory framework. Frequency control policies about real-time balancing of demand and supply is one of the prominent and priority operational challenge requiring urgent attention. This paper reviews the Australian electricity market structure in presence of wind energy and its governance. Various issues related to increased wind generation systems integration are discussed in detail. Currently applied mitigations along with prospective mitigation methods requiring new or improved policies are also discussed. It is concluded tha. developing prospective frequency regulation ancillary services market desires further encouraging policies from governing authority to keep pace with current grid transition and maintain its security.

The design of reliable controllers for wind energy conversion systems(WECSs)requires a dynamic model and accurate parameters of the wind *** this paper,a dynamic model and the parameter measurement and control of a direct-drive variable-speed WECS with a permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG)are *** experimental method is developed for measuring the key parameters of the *** measured parameters are used in the design of the *** generator-side converter is controlled using a vector control scheme tha. maximizes the power extraction under varying wind speeds.A model predictive controller(MPC)is designed for the grid-side voltage source converter(VSC)to regulate the active and reactive power flows to the power grid by controlling the d-and q-axis currents in the synchronous reference *** MPC predicts the future values of the control variables and takes control actions based on the minimum value of the cost *** comply with the grid code requirement,a modified design approach for an LCL filter is presented and incorporated into the *** design process is simple and incorporates significant filter parameters while avoiding iterative *** comparative analysis of the designed filter with conventional L,LC,and iterative LCL filters demonstrates the effectiveness of the modified design *** proposed wind energy system with MPC and LCL filter is simulated in maTLAB/Simulink and experimentally implemented in the laboratory using the dSpace digital signal processor(DSP)*** simulation and experimental results validate the efficacy of the designed controllers using the measured parameters and show dynamic and steady-state performance under varying wind speeds.

PV Based Microgrid with Grid-Support Grid-Forming Inverter Control-(Simulation and Analysis)

Microgrid (MG) is a small entity of electrical network which comprises of various Distributed Generation (DG) sources, storage devices, and group of loads in various classes. MG provides reliable and secure energy supply to the critical loads of communities while operating either in on-grid or off-grid mode. In this study, a coordinated power management control strategy for a typical low voltage (LV) MG network with integration of solar Photovoltaic (PV) and storage facility has been developed and analysed in matlab-Simu-link software environment at various modes (on-grid, off-grid, and on-grid to off-grid transition) of MG operation. Solar PV and battery power inverters are considered as grid-support grid-forming (GsGfm) Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) with the implementation of modified droop and virtual output impedance control strategies. Proposed control strategy supports coordinated control operation between PV units and battery storage, equal power sharing among the DG sources, and smooth MG mode transition with regulation of voltage and frequency level in MG network. In addition, voltage and current THD level were analysed and verified as per the standard of AS4777.

Potentialities of Renewable Energy in Victoria, Australia

In utility power system, electricity demand is being covered largely by fossil fueled power generation, which contributes high level of GHG (greenhouse gas) emission and causes global warming worldwide. In order to reduce GHG emission level, most of the countries in the world targeting towards green energy tha. is power generation from RE (renewable energy) sources. In this paper, it is considered to study prospects of RE sources in particular, solar and wind in Victoria State which are abundant as compared to other sources of renewable. The wind and solar energy feasibility study and sensitivity analysis has been done for Victoria with the aid of HOMER (hybrid optimization model of electric renewable) simulation software. From the study, it has clearly evicted tha. wind energy combinational HPS (hybrid power system) has more contribution, and high potential tha. solar PV (photovoltaic) systems for a particular location. This study also investigates the influences of energy storage in the proposed HPS.
