Genetic and Agronomic Parameter Estimates of Growth, Yield and Related Traits of Maize (Zea mays L.) under Different Rates of Nitrogen Fertilization

This study evaluated the genetic and agronomic parameter estimates of maize under different nitrogen rates. The trial was established at the Njala Agricultural Research Centre experimental site during 2021 and 2022 in a split block design with three maize varieties (IWCD2, 2009EVDT, and DMR-ESR-Yellow) and seven nitrogen (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 kg∙N∙ha−1) rates. Findings showed that cob diameter and anthesis silking time (ASI) had intermediate heritability, ASI had high genetic advance, ASI and grain yield had high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), while traits with high phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were plant height, ASI, grain yield, number of kernel per cob, number of kernel rows, ear length, and ear height. The PCV values were higher than GCV, indicating the influence of the environment in the studied traits. Nitrogen rates and variety significantly (p −1 plots exhibiting the lowest and highest grain yields of 1238 kg∙ha−1 and 2098 kg∙ha−1, respectively. Variety and nitrogen effects on partial factor productivity (PFPN), agronomic efficiency (AEN), net returns (NR), value cost ratio (VCR) and marginal return (MR) indicated that these parameters were significantly affected (p N (41.3 kg grain kg−1∙N) and AEN (29.4 kg grain kg−1∙N) were obtained in the 30 kg∙N∙ha−1 plots, while the highest VCR (2.8) and MR (SLL 1.8 SLL−1 spent on N) were obtained in the 180 kg∙N∙ha−1. Recovery of plastics from dumpsites and landfills to prevent marine plastic pollution in Thailand

Marine plastic pollution has become a major threat to the *** increasing production and use of plastic,combined with limitations of waste management practices,mean the leakage of plastic waste into the environment is bound to *** study focuses on the determination of plastic recovery potential from dumpsites and landfills in Thailand,to potentially prevent marine plastic *** this study,two dumpsites were analysed wherein an average of 42% of plastic was found to be *** value,when extrapolated for Thailand,is equivalent to 187.9 million tonnes of plastic waste in dumpsites and *** there are 2380 dumpsites in the country,this study suggests that 973 of these spread over 42 provinces are located near water bodies or coastline,which should be considered as a *** plastic waste recovered from these dumpsites can be treated by co-fuelling in cement *** kilns can valorise plastic waste as they can reach up to 75%energy recovery from waste,which is much higher compared to traditional waste-to-energy *** adequate incentives and sound regulations,cement industries could help in the reduction of marine plastic pollution with controlled emissions and a very large capacity to co-fuel cement production,there is a readily available solution to manage the large volumes of solid waste generated.

NO Sensing Is Universal and Ancient During the anoxic stages of the early Earth,nitric oxide(NO)served as a major nitrogen source for prokaryotes,which,against a backdrop of an increasingly oxygen-rich atmosphere,evolved NO signaling mechanisms for processes including the regulation of communal behavior(Plate and Marietta,2012).In humans,NO lowers blood pressure,acts as neurotransmitter,and activates macrophages during immune responses(Farah et al.,2018).Animal NO-sensing proteins share structural similarity with those of early prokaryotes,as exemplified by the activation of soluble guanylate cyclases(sGCs),in which a heme-containing domain enables NO sensing by the heme NO/oxygen(H-NOX),thus indicating ancient evolutionary *** plants,NO signals for defense,growth,and developmental processes(Durner et al.,1998;Domingos et al.,2015)appeared to occur mainly through protein S-nitrosation,where the redox changes of sensing proteins could directly modulate enzymatic activities thereby causing the release of reactive oxygen intermediates,or by alteration of methylation patterns of defense genes that,in turn,affect programmed cell death during stress responses(Tada et al.,2008;Yun et al.,2011;Hu et al.,2017).

Short term outcomes of minimally invasive selective lateral pelvic lymph node dissection for low rectal cancer

BACKGROUND Pelvic recurrence after rectal cancer surgery is still a significant problem despite the introduction of total mesorectal excision and chemoradiation treatment(CRT),and one of the most common areas of recurrence is in the lateral pelvic lymph ***,there is a possible role for lateral pelvic lymph node dissection(LPND)in rectal *** To evaluate the short-term outcomes of patients who underwent minimally invasive LPND during rectal cancer *** outcomes were to evaluate for any predictive factors to determine lymph node metastases based on pre-operative *** From October 2016 to November 2019,22 patients with stage II or III rectal cancer underwent minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery and *** patients were all discussed at a multidisciplinary tumor board meeting and most of them received neoadjuvant chemoradiation prior to *** patients had radiologically positive lateral pelvic lymph nodes on the initial staging scans,defined as lymph nodes larger than 7 mm in long axis measurement,or abnormal radiological *** was only performed on the involved *** Majority of the patients were male(18/22,81.8%),with a median age of 65 years(44-81).Eighteen patients completed neoadjuvant CRT pre-operatively.18 patients(81.8%)had unilateral LPND,with the others receiving bilateral *** median number of lateral pelvic lymph nodes harvested was 10(3-22)per pelvic side wall.8 patients(36.4%)had positive metastases identified in the lymph nodes *** median pre-CRT size of these positive lymph nodes was 10 *** length of stay was 7.5 d(3-76),and only 2 patients failed initial removal of their urinary *** rates were low,with only 1 lymphocele and 1 anastomotic *** was only 1 mortality(4.5%).There have been no recurrences so *** Chemoradiation is inadequate in completely eradicating lateral wall metastasis and there are still technical limitations in ac
