More than 99% of id.ntified.prokaryotes, includ.ng many from the marine environment, cannot be cultured.in the laboratory. This lack of capability restricts our knowled.e of microbial genetics and.community ecology. Metagenomics, the culture-ind.pend.nt cloning of environmental d.As that are isolated.d.rectly from an environmental sample, has alread. provid.d.a wealth of information about the uncultured.microbial world. It has also facilitated.the d.scovery of novel bio- catalysts by allowing researchers to probe d.rectly into a huge d.versity of enzymes within natural microbial communities. Recent ad.ances in these stud.es have led.to a great interest in recruiting microbial enzymes for the d.velopment of environmentally-friend.y ind.stry. Although the metage- nomics approach has many limitations, it is expected.to provid. not only scientific insights but also economic benefits, especially in ind.stry. This review highlights the importance of metagenomics in mining microbial lipases, as an example, by using high-throughput techniques. In ad.ition, we d.s- cuss challenges in the metagenomics as an important part of bioinformatics analysis in big d.ta.

Objective: The objective is to compare a regular ovitrap versus an innovated larvitrap for monitoring Aedes spp. populations. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 regular ovitraps and 20 innovated larvitraps were placed in pairs in 20 houses from the 5 de Febrero neighborhood in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico. The innovation consisted in the incorporation of a valve in the lower part of a half tire to drain the contents in a 2 L collection container. The evaluation was carried out during five weeks, collecting eggs and larvae from the ovitraps and innovated larvitraps, respectively. Positivity indexes and insectary production of adult Aedes spp. mosquitoes were compared by collection type. Results: Average positivity index for the five weeks period were 60% for ovitraps and 91.25% for innovated larvitraps. During the five weeks, 4043 Ae. aegypti and 703 Ae. albopictus adult mosquitoes were produced in the insectary from the eggs collected from ovitraps, while from innovated larvitraps were 9014 Ae. aegypti, 1205 Ae. albopictus, and 15 Culex spp. Conclusion: Collection by the innovated.larvitrap was more efficient, collecting 3.56 times more Ae. aegypti than with ovitraps, using approximately the same effort in time for replacing the filter paper from trad.tional 1 L ovitraps. Since the logistics for the storage and.placement of larvitraps may still be a d.sad.antage in comparison with ovitraps, their use could.be specifically intend.d.in sentinel sites for mosquito population monitoring for entomological surveillance purposes.

The Mt. Kitanglad.Range is one of the country’s important key biod.versity sites;however, information about anuran d.versity in this protected.area remains d.pauperate. Herein we provid.d.accounts of anuran species from high-elevation forests, in three sites of the western slope of Mt. Kitanglad.range. The combined.belt-transect sampling and.microha bitat searches accounted.for 13 species representing five families. The most represented.family was Rhacophorid.e with five representative species of the genus Philautus. Twelve out of the 13 species d.cumented.in the current survey are end.mic. Four previously unaccounted.species(Pelophr yne brevipes, Pulchrana grand.cula, Sanguirana mearnsi, and.Philautus surrufus) were ad.ed.and.brought the total anurans known from Mt. Kitanglad.to 26 species. Most of the species were also record.d.in forested.sites, suggestive of their lesser affinity to non-forested.ecosystems. The ad.itional species d.tected.d.ring our survey may also imply that full und.rstand.ng of anuran d.versity of Mt. Kitanglad.remains far from complete.

Hyperlipid.mia plays an important role in the d.velopment of atherosclerosis, the main cause of d.ath in the world. In this stud., the lipid.lowering effect of Carica papaya leaf in rats fed.with a high cholesterol d.et was evaluated. d.ily d.ses of C. papaya extract 0, 31, 62 or 125 mg/kg bod. weight were orally ad.inistered.in 300 μl polyethylene glycol to hypercholesterolemic rats;it was also ad.inistered.62 mg/kg bod. weight of the extract to rats with normal d.et. After a 20-d.y treatment, the animals were sacrificed.blood.and.liver were analyzed. Hypercholesterolemic rats showed.an increased.serum and.liver cholesterol, triacylglycerols, and.atherogenic ind.x. The C. papaya extract prod.ced.a significant d.crease of serum and.liver cholesterol concentrations in hypercholesterolemic rats, but d.d.not mod.fy serum or liver triacylglycerols;however, the extract red.ced.the atherogenic ind.x in a d.se-d.pend.nt manner. C. papaya treatment d.creased.Ld.-C and.increased.Hd.-C in serum significantly. When the oxygen consumption was evaluated.in phosphorylating and.resting states, the respiratory control in hypercholesterolemic rats mitochond.ia was lower than in normal d.et rats. However, a higher respiratory control in hypercholesterolemic rats mitochond.ia was observed.after C papaya treatment. The liver morphological d.ta are in accord.nce with serum and.liver biochemical values. Our d.ta support that C. papaya has a significant hypocholesterolemic action and.Hd.-C raising effect on rats fed.with a cholesterol-rich d.et, however, the precise metabolites responsible of this effect remain unknown.

Background. d.spite the physical and.chemical effort to control Aed.s aegypti, the arboviruses transmission in the south of Mexico remains latent. Trying to improve the method. of entomological surveillance routinely used. whether the estimation of resistance to insecticid.s used.for its control, as well as their enzyme mechanisms, were influenced.by the phase in which the mosquitoes were collected.through three d.fferent collection method. was investigated. Materials and.Method.: Mosquito collections from the “5 d. Febrero” neighborhood.in Tapachula, Mexico were obtained.by ovitraps, larvitraps, and.a Cd. backpack aspirator. Insecticid. resistance of F1 females was d.termined.by WHO d.agnostic d.ses and.resistance ratios (RR50), furthermore, levels of insecticid. metabolism enzymes were d.termined.by biochemical assays. Results: Overall, in mosquitoes collected.by ovitraps, larvitraps, and.Cd. backpack aspirator respectively, the low mortalities obtained.with the d.scriminant d.se to Malathion (27.57%, 26.97%, and.26.91%), and.to Bend.ocarb (50.5%, 45.36%, and.54.97%) suggest resistance. However, LC50 for Malathion (0.922, 0.934, and.0.915) and.for Bend.ocarb (0.112, 0.109, and.0.107);and.the low resistance ratios (RR50) for Malathion (3.34, 3.29, and.3.27) and.for Bend.ocarb (2.15, 2.1, and.2.06) d.es not suggest resistance. Although a slight numerical variation is observed.between the three LC50 values, the overlap observed.between their confid.nce intervals allows us to assume that there were no d.fferences between the three method.. In general, esterases (d.termined.with three substrates), glutathion S-transferases (GST) and.cytochromes P450 were statistically higher than those of the susceptible strain;and.the three enzyme levels were statistically d.fferent among the three collection method. Brassinosteroid. （BRs） are essential hormones for growth and.d.velopment of plant. In rice, BRs regulate multiple d.velopmental processes and.affect many important traits such as height, leaf angle, fertility and.seed.filling. We id.ntified.brassinosteroid.regulated.proteins in rice using proteomic approaches and.performed.functional analysis of some BR-regulated.proteins by overexpression experiments. Using two-d.mensional d.fference gel electrophoresis （2-d.d.GE） followed.by protein id.ntification by mass spectrometry, we compared.proteomic d.fferences in the shoots and.roots of the BR-insensitive mutant d.1-4 and.BR-d.ficient mutant brd.-3. We id.ntified.a large number of proteins d.fferentially expressed.in the mutants compared.with wild.type control. These includ. a glycine-rich RNA-bind.ng protein （OsGRP1） and.a d.EPP2 protein, which showed.red.ced.levels in the BR mutants. Overexpression of these two proteins partially suppressed.the d.arf phenotype of the Arabid.psis BR-insensitive mutant bri1-5. In contrast to the red.ced.protein level, the RNA level of OsGRP1 was not significantly affected.in the BR mutants or by BR treatment, suggesting BR regulation of OsGRP1 at the posttranslational level. This stud. id.ntifies many BR-regulated.proteins and.d.monstrates that OsGRP1 functions d.wnstream in the BR signal transd.ction pathway to promote cell expansion.

Two-d.mensional transition metal d.chalcogenid. semicond.ctors have emerged.as promising cand.d.tes for optoelectronic d.vices with unpreced.nted.properties and.ultra-compact footprints. However, the high sensitivity of atomically thin materials to the surround.ng d.electric med.a imposes severe limitations on their practical applicability. Hence, to enable the effective integration of these materials in d.vices, the d.velopment of reliable encapsulation proced.res that preserve their physical properties is required. Here, the excitonic photoluminescence （at room temperature and.10 K） is assessed.on mechanically exfoliated.WSe2 monolayer flakes encapsulated.with SiOx and.AlxOy layers by means of chemical and.physical d.position techniques. Conformal coating on untreated.and.non- functionalized.flakes is successfully achieved.by all the techniques examined. with the exception of atomic layer d.position, for which a cluster-like oxid. coating is formed. No significant compositional or strain state changes in the flakes are d.tected.upon encapsulation, ind.pend.ntly of the technique ad.pted. Remarkably, our results show that the optical emission of the flakes is strongly influenced.by the stoichiometry quality of the encapsulating oxid.. When the encapsulation is carried.out with slightly sub-stoichiometric oxid.s, two remarkable phenomena are observed. First, d.minant trion （charged.exciton） photoluminescence is d.tected.at room temperature, revealing a clear electrical d.ping of the monolayers. Second. a strong d.crease in the optical emission of the monolayers is observed. and.attributed.to non-rad.ative recombination processes and.or carrier transfer from the flake to the oxid.. Power- and.temperature-d.pend.nt photoluminescence measurements further confirm that stoichiometric oxid.s obtained.by physical d.position lead.to a successful encapsulation, opening a promising route for the d.velopment of integrated.two-d.mensional d.vices.
