A new integrated approach to resolve the saturation profile using high-resolution facies in heterogenous reservoirs

Petrophysical properties have played an important and definitive role in the study of oil and gas reservoirs,necessitating that diverse kinds of information are used to infer these *** this study,the seismic data related to the Hendijan oil field were utilised,along with the available logs of 7 wells of this field,in order to use the extracted relationships between seismic attributes and the values of the shale volume in the wells to estimate the shale volume in wells *** the overall survey of data,a seismic line was selected and seismic inversion methods(model-based,band limited and sparse spike inversion)were applied to *** all of these techniques,the model-based method presented the better *** using seismic attributes and artificial neural networks,the shale volume was then estimated using three types of neural networks,namely the probabilistic neural network(PNN),multi-layer feed-forward network(MLFN)and radial basic function network(RBFN).

Integration of Core Data, Well Logs and Seismic Attributes for Identification of the Low Reservoir Quality Units with Unswept Gas in the Carbonate Rocks of the World's Largest Gas Field

Tight zones of the gas bearing Kangan and Dalan formations of the South Pars gas field contain a considerable amount of unswept gas due to their low porosity, low permeability and isolated pore types. The current study, integrates core data, rock elastic properties and 3D seismic attributes to delineate fight and low-reservoir-quality zones of the South Pars gas field. In the first step, the dynamic reservoir geomechanical parameters were calculated based on empirical relationships from well log data. The log-derived elastic moduli were validated with the available laboratory measurements of core data. Cross plots between estimated porosity and elastic parameters based on Young＇s modulus indicate that low porosity zone coincide with high values of Young＇s module. The results were validated with petro- graphic studies of the available thin sections. The core samples with low porosity and permeability are correlated with strong rocks with tight matrix frameworks and high elastic values. Subsequently, rock elastic properties including Young＇s modulus and Poisson＇s ratio along with porosity were estimated by using neural networks from a collection of 3D post-stack seismic attributes, such as acoustic impedance （ALl）, instantaneous phase of AI and apparent polarity. Distinguishing low reservoir quality areas in pay zones with unswept gas is then facilitated by locating low porosity and high elastic modulus values. An- hydrite zones are identified and eliminated as non-pay zones due to their characterization of zero porosi- ty and high Young modulus values. The methodology described has applications for unconventional re- servoirs more generally, because it is able to distinguish low porosity and permeability zones that are po- tentially productive from those unprospective zones with negligible reservoir quality.

Geochemical assessment of upper Cretaceous crude oils from the Iranian part of the Persian Gulf Basin:Implications for thermal maturity,potential source rocks,and depositional setting

The Upper Cretaceous carbonate successions of the Sarvak Formation host giant oil reservoirs in the Persian *** this research,a total of 28 oil samples from nine oilfields located in the western,central and eastern parts of the Persian Gulf region were studied to determine the genetic relationships of oils,depositional setting of possible source rocks,thermal maturity,and source-rock ages in the Persian Gulf *** to the measured geochemical data,the source rocks facies vary from marine carbonates and marl/carbonates in the central and eastern oilfields to shale/carbonates in the western *** Pr/Ph ratio,steranes and terpanes suggest anoxic to dysoxic conditions of the depositional *** depositional environments experienced both low water stratification/low salinity and normal salinity/unstratified *** of the saturated and aromatic biomarkers shows that all oil samples are mature and most of the source rocks lie within the beginning of the oil-generation *** thermal maturity of the central oilfields is higher than that of the other samples,and has gone beyond the oil-generation *** C2s/C2g steranes ratio suggest that the central oilfelds of the Persian Gulf have Paleozoic and Jurassic source rocks,whereas the Sarvak reservoir in other parts of this region is sourced from Cretaceous carbonate rocks.

Diagenetic and Depositional Impacts on the Reservoir Quality of the Upper Jurassic Arab Formation in the Balal Oilfield, Offshore Iran

The Kimmeridgian-Tithonian aged Arab Formation, as the main reservoir of the Jurassic succession in the Balal oilfield, located in the offshore region of the Iranian sector of the Persian Gulf, is investigated in this study. The formation is composed of dolomites and limestones with anhydrite interbeds. Based on detailed petrographic studies, six microfacies are recognized, which are classified in four sub-environments including supratidal, intertidal, lagoonal and the high energy shoal of a homoclinal carbonate ramp. The main diagenetic features of the studied succession include dolomitization, anhydritization, cementation, micritization, fracturing and compaction. Based on stable isotope data, dolomitization of the upper Arab carbonates is related to sabkha settings （i.e. evaporative type）. In terms of sequence stratigraphy, three shallowing-upward sequences are recognized, based on core and wireline log data from four wells of the studied field. Considering depositional and diagenetic effects on the reservoir quality, the studied facies are classified into eight reservoir rock types （RRT） with distinct reservoir qualities. Dolomitization has played a major role in reservoir quality enhancement, whereas anhydritization, carbonate cementation, and compaction have damaged the pore throat network. Distribution of the recognized RRTs in time and space are discussed within the context of a sequence stratigraphic framework.

An Integrated Rock Typing Approach for Unraveling the Reservoir Heterogeneity of Tight Sands in the Whicher Range Field of Perth Basin, Western Australia

Tight gas sands in Whicher Range Field of Perth Basin show large heterogeneity in reservoir characteristics and production behavior related to depositional and diagenetic features. Diagenetic events (compaction and cementation) have severely affected the pore system. In order to investigate the petrophysical characteristics, reservoir sandstone facies were correlated with core porosity and permeability and their equivalent well log responses to describe hydraulic flow units and electrofacies, respectively. Thus, very tight, tight, and sub-tight sands were differentiated. To reveal the relationship between pore system properties and depositional and diagenetic characteristics in each sand type, reservoir rock types were extracted. The identified reservoir rock types are in fact a reflection of internal reservoir heterogeneity related to pore system properties. All reservoir rock types are characterized by a compacted fabric and cemented framework. But distribution and dominance of diagenetic products in each of them depend on primary depositional composition and texture. The results show that reservoir rock typing based on three aspects of reservoir sandstones (depositional properties, diagenetic features and petrophysical characteristics) is a suitable technique for depiction of reservoir heterogeneity, recognition of reservoir units and identifying factors controlling reservoir quality of tight sandstones. This methodology can be used for the other tight reservoirs.

Investigation of Microfacies—Electrofacies and Determination of Rock Types on the Aptian Dariyan Formation NW Persian Gulf

Dariyan (Shuaiba) Formation is one of the main reservoir units in the Persian Gulf and South Western Iran. The microfacies and depositional environment of this formation is been investigated in the current study and influencing factors in reservoir characteristics have been discussed for Dariyan reservoir in the Soroush oil field. Facies analysis conducted on core and cutting samples indicated that Dariyan Formation is mainly deposited on a carbonate ramp setting with a shallow intra shelf basin. In addition, it has been demonstrated that facies changes reflect the main controls of the tectonic and climate (sea level fluctuations) during the deposition of these sediments. To determine the reservoir unites in this formation, 5 electrofacies were determined by neural network method that it is using different petrophysical logs (i.e. GR, PHIE and SWE). Using rock typing as the best way to establish an association between the various collected data (e.g. logs and cores) and geological descriptions 4 hydraulic flow units or rock types, determined on the basis of the Flow Zone Indicator (FZI) method in the Dariyan Formation of the Soroush field. Establishing a correlation between microfacies and rock types, the carbonate zones with moderate to good reservoir properties and also the intervals with the highest reservoir quality were determined.

Integrated reservoir characterization of the Permo-Triassic gas reservoirs in the Central Persian Gulf

The upper Dalan and Kangan or Permian-Triassic carbonate formations in the central the Persian Gulf are considered as world's giant gas reservoirs. The primary purpose of this research is to model and evaluate the relationship between hydraulic flow units(HFUs), electrofacies and microfacies with systems tracts of Permian-Triassic sequences. By integrating the results of core data, petrographic studies, and petrophysical logs of the studied formations, hydraulic flow units and electrofacies were identified. Based on the results of petrographic studies, twelve microfacies were identified in terms of textural and depositional characteristics. Based on depositional setting, sedimentary facies and INPEFA values obtained from gamma ray log and gamma deviation log(GDL) in the context of sequence stratigraphy, zonation of Dalan and Kangan reservoirs is carried out. The zonation boundaries correspond to the key stratal surfaces(sequence boundary and maximum flooding surface). Seven petrographic rock types(PRT) were identified for the upper Dalan-Kangan reservoirs based on sedimentary texture, diagenetic process and dominant pores. Using porosity and permeability data from the core analysis, five hydraulic flow units were identified based on the flow zone indicator(FZI) method. Using multi-resolution graph-based clustering(MRGC) four electrofacies were detected from petrophysical data(gamma, neutron, density and acoustic logs). Subsequently, the INPEFA, GDL and electrofacies were spatially modeled using the sequential indicator simulation(SIS) and sequential Gaussian simulation(SGS) geostatistical ***, a clear agreement was revealed between the reservoir zones and the stratigraphic sequence framework. It this regard, the microfacies belonging to the high-energy and grain-dominated settings(packstone, grainstone) of leeward shoal, shoal and seaward shoal belts have the best reservoir units due to the influence of dissolution and dolomitization. Integrated Rock Typing of the Grainstone Facies in a Sequence Framework：a Case from the Jurassic Arab Formation in the Persian Gulf

The late Jurassic Arab Formation, a significant carbonate-evaporite reservoir rock in the Persian Gulf, is characterized by frequent grainstone facies. For rock type identification and reservoir characterization, core description, petrographic studies and pore system evaluation are integrated for Balal oil field in the Persian Gulf. The grainstone facies are developed into three shoal subenvironments on a carbonate ramp platform： leeward, central and seaward. Compaction, dissolution, cementation, anhydrite mineralization and dolomitization are the main diagenetic processes affecting the depositional pore system. Considering depositional and diagenetic features and pore types, the grainstones are classified into six rock types （RT 1 to RT6）. Rock types 1, 2 and 5 have large pore throat sizes with inter- granular and touching vug pore types. In rock type 3, moldic pores lead to high porosity and low permeability. Rock types 4 and 6 are cemented by anhydrite, calcite and dolomite. Generally, RTs 1, 2, 3 and 5 are related to late Transgressive systems tract （TST） and early Highstand systems tracts （HST） and show fair to good reservoir quality. In contrast, RTs 4 and 6 of late HST system tract show lower poroperm values, due to evaporite mineralization. Characterization of the grainstone facies provides a comprehensive understanding of the reservoir zones of the Arab Formation.

On the Linear Convergence of the Approximate Proximal Splitting Method for Non-smooth Convex Optimization
