Preclinical and clinical studies indicate that psychostimulants,in addition to having abuse potential,may elicit brain dysfunctions and/or neurotoxic *** toxicity induced by psychostimulants may pose serious health risks since the recreational use of these substances is on the rise among young people and *** present review provides an overview of recent research,conducted between 2018 and 2023,focusing on brain dysfunctions and neurotoxic effects elicited in experimental models and humans by amphetamine,cocaine,methamphetamine,3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine,methylphenidate,caffeine,and *** elucidation of factors and mechanisms that underlie psychostimulant-induced brain dysfunction and neurotoxicity is crucial for understanding the acute and enduring noxious brain effects that may occur in individuals who use psychostimulants for recreational and/or therapeutic purposes.

We hypothesize that for disaster risk mitigation,many households,despite being aware of their risk and possible mitigation actions,never seriously consider doing anything about *** mitigation-focused decisions,since there is no equivalent to warning messages,the decision process is likely to evolve over an extended *** explore what activates hurricane mitigation protective action decisions through three research questions:(1)to what extent are homeowners unengaged in protective action decision making?(2)What homeowner characteristics are associated with lack of engagement?And(3)to what extent do different life events trigger engagement in the decision-making process?We use the Precaution Adoption Process Model to conceptualize engagement as distinct from decision making;the broader protective action decision-making literature to explore drivers of engagement;and Life Course Theory to examine potential transitions from unengaged to *** use survey data of homeowners in North Carolina to examine these questions *** suggest that one-third of respondents had never engaged in protective action decisions,that life experiences differ in their occurrence frequency and effect on households’mitigation decisions,and that some events,such as renovating,reroofing,or purchasing a home may offer critical moments that could be leveraged to encourage greater engagement in mitigation decision making.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent and self-renewing stem cellsthat have great potential as cell therapy for autoimmune and inflammatorydisorders, as well as for other clinical conditions, due to their immunoregulatoryand regenerative properties. MSCs modulate the inflammatory milieu by releasingsoluble factors and acting through cell-to-cell mechanisms. MSCs switch theclassical inflammatory status of monocytes and macrophages towards a nonclassicaland anti-inflammatory phenotype. This is characterized by an increasedsecretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines, a decreased release of pro-inflammatorycytokines, and changes in the expression of cell membrane molecules and inmetabolic pathways. The MSC modulation of monocyte and macrophage phenotypesseems to be critical for therapy effectiveness in several disease models, sincewhen these cells are depleted, no immunoregulatory effects are observed. Here,we review the effects of living MSCs (metabolically active cells) and metabolicallyinactive MSCs (dead cells that lost metabolic activity by induced inactivation) andtheir derivatives (extracellular vesicles, soluble factors, extracts, and microparticles)on the profile of macrophages and monocytes and the implications forimmunoregulatory and reparative processes. This review includes mechanisms ofaction exhibited in these different therapeutic appro-aches, which induce the antiinflammatoryproperties of monocytes and macrophages. Finally, we overviewseveral possibilities of therapeutic applications of these cells and their derivatives,with results regarding monocytes and macrophages in animal model studies andsome clinical trials.

The relationship between reactive oxygen and nitrogen species(ROS-RNS)secretion and the concomitant biocorrosion of degradable magnesium(Mg)materials is poorly *** found that Mg foils implanted short term in vivo(24 h)displayed large amounts of proinflammatory F4/80+/iNOS+macrophages at the *** sought to investigate the interplay between biodegrading Mg materials(98.6%Mg,AZ31&AZ61)and macrophages(RAW 264.7)stimulated with lipopolysaccharide(RAW 264.7^(LPS))to induce ROS-RNS *** test how these proinflammatory ROS-RNS secreting cells interact with Mg corrosion in vitro,Mg and AZ61 discs were suspended approximately 2 mm above a monolayer of RAW 264.7 cells,either with or without ^(LPS).The surfaces of both materials showed acute(24 h)changes when incubated in the proinflammatory RAW 264.7^(LPS) *** discs incubated with RAW 264.7^(LPS) macrophages showed greater corrosion pitting,while AZ61 showed morphological and elemental bulk product changes via scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SeM-eDX).X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)analysis showed a reduction in the Ca/P ratio of the surface products for AZ61 disc incubated with RAW 264.7^(LPS),but not the Mg ***,RAW 264.7^(LPS) macrophages were found to be more viable in the acute biodegradative environment generated by Mg materials,as demonstrated by calcein-AM and cleaved(active)caspase-3 staining(CC3).^(LPS) stimulation caused an increase in ROS-RNS,and a decrease in antioxidant peroxidase *** and AZ61 were found to change this ROS-RNS balance,independently of physiological antioxidant *** findings highlight the complexity of the cellular driven acute inflammatory responses to different biodegradable Mg,and how it can potentially affect performance of these materials.

The active layer is the top layer of permafrost soils that thaws during the summer season due to increased ambient temperatures and solar radiation inputs. This layer is important because almost all biological activity takes place there during the summer. The depth of active layer thaw is influenced by climatic conditions. Vegetation has also been found to have a strong impact on active layer thaw, because it can intercept incoming radiation, thereby insulating the soil from ambient conditions. In order to look at the role of vegetation and climate on active layer thaw, we measured thaw depth and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI; a proxy for aboveground plant biomass) along a latitudinal temperature gradient in arctic Alaska and Canada. At each site several measurements of thaw and NDVIwere taken in areas with high amounts of vegetation and areas with little to no vegetation. Results show that the warmest regions, which had the greatest levels of NDVI, had relatively shallow thaw depths, and the coldest regions, which had the lowest levels of NDVI, also had relatively shallow thaw depths. The intermediate regions, which had moderate levels of NDVIand air temperature, had the greatest depth of thaw. These results indicate that temperature and vegetation interact to control the depth of the active layer across a range of arctic ecosystems. By developing a relationship to explain thaw depth through NDVIand temperature or latitude, the possibility exists to extrapolate thaw depth over large scales via remote sensing applications.

Biodegradable stents have tremendous theoretical potential as an alternative to bare metal stents and drug-eluting stents for the treatment of obstructive coronary artery *** bioresorbable or biodegradable scaffold material needs to possess optimal mechanical properties and uniform degradation behavior that avoids local and systemic ***,molybdenum(Mo)has been investigated as a potential novel biodegradable material for this *** its proven moderate degradation rate and excellent mechanical properties,Mo may represent an ideal source material for clinical cardiac and vascular *** present study was performed to evaluate the mechanical performance of metallic Mo in vitro and the biodegradation properties in *** results demonstrated favorable mechanical behavior and a uniform degradation profile as desired for a new generation ultra-thin degradable endovascular stent ***,Mo implants in mouse arteries avoided the typical cellular response that contributes to *** was minimal neointimal hyperplasia over 6 months,an absence of excessive smooth muscle cell(SMC)proliferation or inflammation near the implant,and avoidance of significant harm to regenerating endothelial cells(eC).Qualitative inspection of kidney sections showed a potentially pathological remodeling of kidney Bowman’s capsule and glomeruli,indicative of impaired filtering function and development of kidney disease,although quantifications of these morphological changes were not statistically ***,the results suggest that the products of Mo corrosion may exert beneficial or inert effects on the activities of inflammatory and arterial cells,while exerting potentially toxic effects in the kidneys that warrant further investigation.
