Long-lasting effects of unplanned logging on the seed rain of mixed conifer-hardwood forests in southern South America

Understanding the effects of disturbance on seed rain is critical to predict changes in forest species composition and *** effects on seed rain in a mixed conifer-hardwood forest complex in southern Brazil were *** year of seed rain data were collected from a large-scale observational experiment in logged and protected forests and quantity and average seed size weighted by species abundance(CWM)were compared between old-growth and logged stands 55 years after logging *** these data,variations in frequency of functional groups of species in the seed rain were examined to see if they could be attributed to *** show that the number of seeds per trap was highly right-skewed,ranging from 13 to 12,788 seeds per trap in one *** rain was affected by logging history,with seed traps in old-growth plots receiving significantly less seeds than traps in logged *** species included mean seed size weighted by species abundance were significantly smaller in logged than in old-growth *** difference persisted after the exclusion of Arawcaria a large-seeded pioneer which was intensively logged,although the difference of seed size between the two forest classes was greatly *** abundance in the seed rain differed significantly from the established tree community,between logged and oldgrowth *** composition of the seed rain was much more variable than the composition of the established tree community and its points more scattered over the ordination space than the points corresponding to the protected *** number of collected seeds across different functional groups of species significantly differed between logged and old-growth *** seed rain of logged forests reflects their arrested succes sion as indicated by reduced abundance of functional groups such as pioneers,large seeded pioneers and A raucaria,as well as reduced functional diversity.S eed rain differences between logged and old-

By embedding the Standard Model effective field theory(SMEFT) in the more general Higgs effective field theory(HEFT), we expose correlations among the coefficients of the latter that, if found to be violated in future data, would lead to the experimental falsification of the SMEFT framework. These are derived from the necessary symmetric point of HEFT and analyticity of the SMEFT Lagrangian that allows the construction of the SMEFT expansion, as laid out by other groups, and properties at that point of the Higgs-flare function F(h) coupling Goldstone and Higgs bosons, of the Higgs potential V(h) and of the Higgs-top quark coupling function G(h).

Neurostimulation for fecal incontinence after correction of repair of imperforate anus

We are reporting the case of a 32-year-old female who had suffered from fecal incontinence(FI). She was born with an imperforate anus and a recto-vaginal fistula; she underwent repair at 6 mo of age. At 29 years of age, she was still fecally incontinent despite extensive pelvic floor reeducation. A magnetic resonance imaging and an anal electromyography were performed. Because her symptoms were considered to be probably due to extra-sphincteric implantation of the neo-anus, a redo was performed of the recto-neo-anal intra-sphincteric anastomosis. A neurostimulator device was subsequently implanted for persistent incontinence. Solid and liquid FI resolved, and her quality of life improved markedly. Combining surgery to correct the position of the neo-anus within the anal sphincter complex and neurostimulation could thus become a new approach in cases of refractory FI for patients with imperforate anus as a newborn. Follow-up into adulthood after pediatric imperforate anus surgery should be recommended for adult patients with persistent FI.

Solid-state cooling based on caloric effects is considered a viable alternative to replace the conventional vapor-compression refrigeration *** barocaloric materials,recent results show that elastomers are promising candidates for cooling applications around *** the present paper,we report supergiant barocaloric effects observed in acetoxy silicone rubber—a very popular,low-cost and environmentally friendly *** values of adiabatic temperature change and reversible isothermal entropy change were obtained upon moderate applied pressures and relatively low *** huge barocaloric changes are associated both to the polymer chain rearrangements induced by confined compression and to the first-order structural *** results are comparable to the best barocaloric materials reported so far,opening encouraging prospects for the application of elastomers in near future solid-state cooling devices.

Transient measurement of phononic states with covariance-based stochastic spectroscopy

We present a novel approach to transient Raman spectroscopy,which combines stochastic probe pulses and a covariance-based detection to measure stimulated Raman signals in alpha-quartz.A coherent broadband pump is used to simultaneously impulsively excite a range of different phonon modes,and the phase,amplitude,and energy of each mode are independently recovered as a function of the pump-probe delay by a noisy-probe and covariance-based *** experimental results and the associated theoretical description demonstrate the feasibility of 2D-Raman experiments based on the stochastic-probe schemes,with new capabilities not available in equivalent mean-value-based 2D-Raman *** work unlocks the gate for nonlinear spectroscopies to capitalize on the information hidden within the noise and overlooked by a mean-value analysis.

The use of magnetic nanoparticles in nanomedicine keeps expanding and,for most applications,the nanoparticles are internalized in cells then left within,bringing the need for accurate,fast,and easy to handle methodologies to assess their behavior in the cellular ***,a benchtop-size magnetic sensor is introduced to provide real-time precise measurement of nanoparticle magnetism within living *** values obtained with the sensor,of cells loaded with different doses of magnetic nanoparticles,are first compared to conventional vibrating sample magnetometry(VSM),and a strong correlation remarkably validates the use of the magnetic sensor as magnetometer to determine the nanoparticle cellular *** sensor is then used to monitor the progressive intracellular degradation of the nanoparticles,over ***,this real-time in situ measure is performed on a stem cell-spheroid tissue model and can run continuously on a same spheroid,with cells kept alive ***,such continuous magnetic measurement of cell magnetism at the tissue scale does not impact either tissue formation,vibility,or stem cell function,including differentiation and extracellular matrix production.

Preparation and Microstructural Characterization of Activated Carbon-Metal Oxide Hybrid Catalysts:New Insights into Reaction Paths

In catalysis processes, activated carbon （AC） and metal oxides （MOs） are widely used either as catalysts or as catalyst supports because of their unique properties. A combination of AC and MO nanoparticles in a single hybrid material usually entails both chemical and microstructural changes, which may largely influence the potential catalytic suitability and performance of the resulting product. Here, the prepa- ration of a wide series of AC-MO hybrid catalysts is studied. Three series of such catalysts are prepared by support first of MO （Al2O3, Fe2O3, SnO2, TiO2, WO3, and ZnO） precursors on a granular AC by wet impregnation and oven-drying at 120 ℃, and by subsequent heat treatment at 200 or 850℃ in inert atmosphere. Both the chemical composition and microstructure are mainly investigated by powder X-ray diffraction. Yield and ash content are often strongly dependent on the MO precursor and heat treatment temperature, in particular for the Sn catalysts. With the temperature rise, trends are towards the transformation of metal hydroxides into metal oxides, crystallinity improvement, and occurrence of drastic composition changes, ultimately leading to the formation of metals in elemental state and even metal carbides. Reaction paths during the preparation are explored for various hybrid catalysts and new insights into them are provided.
