Post-dispersal seed predation of three grassland species in a plant diversity experiment

Aims Post-dispersal seed predation is an important ecosystem process because it can influence the seed’s fate after the initial dispersal from the mother plant and subsequently transform *** at small scales,post-dispersal seed predation can vary greatly depending on seed identity,granivorous taxa or microhabitat ***,little is known about the role of plant species richness and functional group richness in post-dispersal seed *** overall aim of this study was to test whether increasing plant species richness or plant functional group richness affects the rate and variability of post-dispersal seed *** additionally investigated the influence of vegetation structure and seed species identity on the rate and variability of post-dispersal seed predation and whether the influence of different granivorous taxa changed with increasing plant species *** We conducted seed removal experiments along a long-term experimental plant diversity gradient,comprising plots with monocultures to 60 species mixtures of common grassland species in Jena,Germany,in August *** studied seeds of Onobrychis viciifolia,Pastinaca sativa and Trifolium pratense in exclusion experiments(seed cafeterias),an experimental setup that allowed access either for arthropods or slugs or for all granivorous ***,seeds removed from seed cafeterias were classified as consumed but we used traceable fluorescent-coloured seeds to obtain more accurate predation rates by subtracting recovered seeds from overall removed *** effect of multiple vegetation variables on mean and variability of seed predation rates was analysed using generalized mixed-effect models and linear regressions,*** Findings Rates of recovered seeds were low but contributed to significant differences between seed predation rates and removal rates of seeds in some *** predation rates were not directly correlated with increasing plant spe

Background:Retention forestry is a management strategy aiming to mitigate biodiversity loss by retaining structural elements such as dead trees that would otherwise be *** we analyze the biomass,diversity and abundance among forest beetles collected using window traps on 1281-ha forest sites reflecting gradients in the amount of structural elements in southwestern ***:We found that beetle biomass increased with mean diameter at breast height(a measure of tree size),and decreased with stand structural *** of individual feeding guilds responded differently to forest structural elements,namely lying deadwood,understory complexity,tree basal area and stand structural *** family diversity increased with the effective number of layers,i.e.1-m forest strata occupied by vegetation assessed via terrestrial laser *** of feeding guilds responded to only elevation and share of deciduous *** composition in terms of biomass was structured by forest elements similar to biomass of individual feeding guilds,with the addition of lying *** differed from community composition in terms of abundance of feeding guilds,which was structured by primarily standing deadwood volume and share of deciduous ***:Our results show that biomass,diversity and abundance respond differently to forest structural *** suggests that the concurrent prioritization of multiple forest elements is needed to promote forest beetles,with more focus placed on the differing resource needs among feeding *** addition,retention strategies should also consider the varying responses of beetle biodiversity metrics when assessing the importance of forest structural elements.

Tree diversity and nectar composition affect arthropod visitors on extrafloral nectaries in a diversity experiment

Effects of grassland management, endophytic fungi and predators on aphid abundance in two distinct regions

MICROSTRUCTURE CHARACTERIZATION OF LiCoO_2 COATINGS FOR MOLTEN CARBONATE FUEL CELLS COMPONENTS

The sol-gel process, sing aqueous solutions, is used for dip coating ontosubstrates of 316L stainless steel. A suitable coating of Li CoO_2 is achieved by varying thethickness and heat treating at 650 deg C for 3 h. Thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis andSEM are carried out to characterize the microstructure of the coatings. The results show that thecoating transforms from an amorphous gel to crystalline phases above 350 deg C, and show a porousstructure. The phase transition mechanism is discussed.

Evidence from genetics and from analyzing cellular and animal models have converged to suggest links between neurodegenerative disorders of early and late ***,we summarize emerging links between the most common late life neurodegenerative disease,Alzheimer’s disease,and the most common early life neurodegenerative diseases,neuronal ceroid *** studies reported an overlap of clinically diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease and mutations in genes known to cause neuronal ceroid *** data strongly suggest dysfunction of intracellular trafficking mechanisms and the autophagy-endolysosome system in both types of neurodegenerative *** suggests shared cytopathological processes underlying these different types of neurodegenerative diseases.A better understanding of the common mechanisms underlying the different diseases is important as this might lead to the identification of novel targets for therapeutic concepts,the transfer of therapeutic strategies from one disease to the other and therapeutic approaches tailored to patients with specific ***,we review dysfunctions of the endolysosomal autophagy pathway in Alzheimer’s disease and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses and summarize emerging etiologic and genetic overlaps.

Water and other solvents may exhibit unusual thermodynamic and kinetic properties when nano-confined, as demonstrated in several previous reports[1–4]. For example, extreme cylindrical nanoconfinement has been realized in carbon nanotubes [1], improving ethanol production by an order of magnitude,while the anomalous fluidity of nanoconfined water relative to nanoconfined organic solvents is important for lubrication [2,3].
