Could wastewater analysis be a useful tool for China?——A review

Analysing wastewater samples is an innovative approach that overcomes many limitations of traditional surveys to identify and measure a range of chemicals that were consumed by or exposed to people living in a sewer catchment area. First conceptualised in 2001, much progress has been made to make wastewater analysis（WWA） a reliable and robust tool for measuring chemical consumption and/or exposure. At the moment, the most popular application of WWA, sometimes referred as sewage epidemiology, is to monitor the consumption of illicit drugs in communities around the globe, including China. The approach has been largely adopted by law enforcement agencies as a device to monitor the temporal and geographical patterns of drug consumption. In the future, the methodology can be extended to other chemicals including biomarkers of population health（e.g. environmental or oxidative stress biomarkers, lifestyle indicators or medications that are taken by different demographic groups） and pollutants that people are exposed to（e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,perfluorinated chemicals, and toxic pesticides）. The extension of WWA to a huge range of chemicals may give rise to a field called sewage chemical-information mining（SCIM） with unexplored potentials. China has many densely populated cities with thousands of sewage treatment plants which are favourable for applying WWA/SCIM in order to help relevant authorities gather information about illicit drug consumption and population health status. However, there are some prerequisites and uncertainties of the methodology that should be addressed for SCIM to reach its full potential in China.

A set H of subgroups of G is said to be a complete Hall σ-set of G if every member ≠ 1 of H is a Hall σi-subgroup of G, for some i ∈ I, and H contains exactly one Hall σi-subgroup of G for every σi ∈σ(G). A subgroup H of G is said to be:σ-permutable or σ-quasinormal in G if G possesses a complete Hall σ-set H such that HAx= AxH for all A ∈ H and x ∈ G:σ-subnormal in G if there is a subgroup chain A = A0≤A1≤···≤ At = G such that either Ai-1■Ai or Ai/(Ai-1)Ai is a finite σi-group for some σi ∈σ for all i = 1,..., *** Mn n-1 l subgroup of Mi-1, i = 1, 2,..., n, then Mn is said to be an n-maximal subgroup of G. If each n-maximal subgroup of G is σ-subnormal(σ-quasinormal,respectively) in G but, in the case n > 1, some(n-1)-maximal subgroup is not σ-subnormal(not σ-quasinormal,respectively) in G, we write mσ(G)= n(mσq(G)= n, respectively).In this paper, we show that the parameters mσ(G) and mσq(G) make possible to bound the σ-nilpotent length lσ(G)(see below the definitions of the terms employed), the rank r(G) and the number |π(G)| of all distinct primes dividing the order |G| of a finite soluble group G. We also give the conditions under which a finite group is σ-soluble or σ-nilpotent, and describe the structure of a finite soluble group G in the case when mσ(G)=|π(G)|. Some known results are generalized.

Assembly and metrology of nIF target subassemblies using robotic systems

With European laser Facilities such as the Extreme light Infrastructure(ElI) and the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields(HIBEF) scheduled to come online within the next couple of years, General Atomics, as a major supplier of targets and target components for the High Energy Density Physics community in the United States, is gearing up to meet their demand for large numbers of low cost targets. Using the production of a subassembly for the national Ignition Facility's fusion targets as an example, we demonstrate that through automation of assembly tasks, the design of targets and their experimental setup can be fairly complex while keeping the assembly time and cost as a minimum.A six-axis Mitsubishi robot is used in combination with vision feedback and a force–torque sensor to assemble target subassemblies of different scales and designs with minimal change of tooling, allowing for design flexibility and short assembly setup times. Implementing automated measurement routines on a nikon nEXIV microscope further reduces the effort required for target metrology, while electronic data collection and transfer complete a streamlined target production operation that can be adapted to a large variety of target designs.

Phase field modeling with large driving forces

There is growing interest in applying phase field methods as quantitative tools in materials discovery and ***,large driving forces,common in many materials systems,lead to unstable phase field profiles,thus requiring fine spatial and temporal *** demands more computational resources,limits the ability to simulate systems with a suitable size,and deteriorates the capability of quantitative ***,we develop a strategy to map the driving force to a constant perpendicular to the *** with the third-order interpolation function,we find a stable phase field profile that is independent of the magnitude of the driving *** power of this approach is illustrated using three *** demonstrate that by using the driving force extension method,it is possible to employ a grid size orders of magnitude larger than traditional *** approach is general and should apply to many other phase field models.

Chalcopyrite and bornite are the main Au-bearing minerals at Cu porphyry deposits,volcanogenic massive sulfide(VMS)deposits,Cu-ni deposits of the mafic magmatic complexes,and ores of submarine sulfide *** and intermediate solid solutions with wide compositional variations(bnss and iss–high-temperature chalcopyrite,correspondingly),which can scavenge economic concentrations of Au,appear in the Cu-Fe-S system at ore-forming ***,the state of Au in bnss and iss is yet *** solve this conundrum,we synthesized samples with net chemical composition of bnss and iss,studied them by in situ X–ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS),and used the experimental data to explain the Au distribution among natural ore-forming *** sulfide samples were obtained at 495–700℃ in Au-saturated system by means of salt flux *** bnss contained1.2–1.6 log units more Au than iss:up to 18 wt.%Au in bnss vs 0.4 wt.%Au in iss at 700*** increase of temperature resulted in the sharp increase of Au concentration in both phases,1 log unit per 100℃ at f(S2)close to S_((l)) *** of Au l_(3)-edge spectra recorded at 25–675℃ revealed that at 25℃ Au exists mainly in the metallic *** t>500℃ the spectral features of Audisappear,and “chemically bound”Au *** Au form of occurrence in the iss field is interpreted as Au-bearing clusters with a stromeyerite-like(CuAgS)*** Cu_(2–x)S and bnss contain Au in a mixture of stromeyeritelike and petrovskaite-like(Au_(0.8)Ag_(1.2)S)*** chemical composition of both forms is close to CuAuS,where the nearest Au neighbors are two S atoms at R_(Au-S)=2.34–2.36Å.Results of the present study allow to determine the state of Au and its concentration in the main Cu-bearing minerals of sulfide ores as a function of the T-f(S_(2))-compositional *** to the sharp increase of the CuAuS clusters stability with increasing temperature,in high-temperature ores formed at t>350℃ A

Third-order non-linearities are important because they allow control over light pulses in ubiquitous high-quality centro-symmetric materials like silicon and *** four-wave mixing provides a direct measure of the third-order non-linear sheet susceptibility x^(3)(where l represents the material thickness)as well as technological possibilities such as optically gated detection and emission of *** picosecond pulses from a free electron laser,we show that silicon doped with P or Bi has a value of x^(3)lin the THz domain that is higher than that reported for any other material in any wavelength *** immediate implication of our results is the efficient generation of intense coherent THz light via upconversion(also a x^(3)process),and they open the door to exploitation of nondegenerate mixing and optical nonlinearities beyond the perturbative regime.
