Activation of complement generates C5a which leads to signaling through C5aR 1. This is tightly controlled, including by the plasma proteins factor H （FH） and carboxypeptidase N. Here we studied a chronic serum sickness （CSS） model of glomerulonephritis （GN） in which there is an active humoral immune response, formation of glomerular immune complexes （ICs）, and resulting glomerular inflammation. The antibody response, glomerular IC deposition, the degree of GN, and consequent renal functional insufficiency in CSS were all worse in FH-/- mice compared to wild-type FH＋/＋ animals. This was ameliorated in the former by giving a C5aR1 antagonist for the final 3 weeks of the 5-week protocol. In contrast, blocking CP-mediated inactivation of C5a increased these disease measures. Thus, complement regulation by both plasma FH and CP to limit the quantity of active C5a is important in conditions where the humoral immune response is directed to a continuously present foreign antigen. Signaling through C5aR1 enhances the humoral immune response as well as the inflammatory response to ICs that have formed in glomeruli. Both effects are relevant even after disease has begun. Thus, pharmacological targeting of C5a in IC-mediated GN has potential clinical relevance.

Background:Lymphotoxin(LT)is an important mediator in Sjogren's syndrome(SS),both in patients and in animal *** of the LT alpha gene prevented the development of disease manifestations in the interelukin alpha transgenic mouse(IL14αTG)mouse model of ***:The current study was designed to evaluate the use of LT inhibitors at different stages of the disease in IL14αTG *** and Methods:IL14αTG mice were treated with anti‐LTa monoclonal antibody,LTb receptor‐immunoglobulin fusion protein(LTBR‐Ig)or isotype control during different stages of disease and analysis of salivary gland function,immunoglobulins,autoantibodies and histology of internal organs *** and Discussion:The inhibitors were very effective in maintaining salivary gland function and preventing infiltration of the glands with lymphocytes when used in the early stages of the *** LT at later stages of the disease did not recover salivary gland function but was still effective in limiting extra glandular manifestations including eye disease and tumor *** differences were noted in the effectiveness of anti‐LTαversus LTBR‐Ig in limiting particular disease ***:LT inhibitors deserve further investigation in the management of SS at whatever stage is identified.

Fluorite(CaF_(2))is a common hydrothermal mineral,which precipitates from fluorine-rich fluids with an exceptional capacity to transport metals and Rare Earth Elements(REEs).Hence,the ability to date fluorite has important implications for understanding the timing of metal transport in hydrothermal *** we present,for the first time,fluorite Lu-Hf dates from fluorite-carbonate veins from the Olympic Cu-Au Province in South *** fluorite dates were obtained in situ using the recently developed LA-ICP-MS/MS Lu-Hf dating method.A fluorite-calcite age of 1588±19 Ma was obtained for the Torrens Dam prospect,consistent with the timing of the formation of the nearby Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper gold Breccia *** in the overlying Neoproterozoic successions were dated at 502±14 Ma,indicating a temporal link between Cu-sulphide remobilisation and the Delamerian ***,we present a multi-session reproducible date for magmatic fluorite from a monzogranite in the Pilbara Craton(Lu-Hf age of 2866±19 Ma).This age is consistent with a garnet Lu-Hf age from the same sample(2850±12 Ma)and holds potential to be developed into a secondary reference material for future fluorite Lu-Hf dating.

Measurement of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) incident on photosynthetic organisms is a crucial measurement for understanding how organisms respond to various light conditions, and for calculating electron flow through the photosynthetic machinery. Measurements of PAR are typically performed in the region of the electromagnetic spectrum between 400 - 700 nm, which is the region of radiation that is responsible for promoting photosynthesis. Typically, to ensure that the sensor measures in this range, the implementation of long- and short-pass filters is required. Although this allows the exclusion of radiation outside of the PAR region, such filters can be expensive. Additionally, the implementation of autonomous PAR measurements requires costly commercial instruments. Here, a straight-forward, inexpensive apparatus has been designed and constructed using a sensor that can distinguish between red, green, blue and white light. The constructed apparatus was able to perform comparably to a commercial PAR sensor. Furthermore, the implementation of the device to measure PAR intensity over a three-day period shows how the apparatus can be implemented for use as a constant light monitor.

Background:Spontaneous heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is a pro-thrombotic syndrome in which anti-heparin antibodies develop without heparin *** presentation:A 78-year-old man who underwent a successful lumbar laminectomy presented to the hospital 5 days after discharge for stroke-like symptoms and was found to have acute infarcts of the bilateral frontal *** patient was found to be severely thrombocytopenic and was incidentally found to have an inferior wall myocardial *** investigation led to the diagnosis of bilateral lower extremity deep vein *** overall clinical presentation prompted a detailed hematologic workup that indicated positivity for heparin-induced thrombocy-topenia despite no previous exposure to heparin ***:This case illustrates a patient with no prior lifetime heparin exposure who underwent laminectomy with subsequent development of acute infarcts of the bilateral frontal lobes,an inferior wall myocardial infarction,and bilateral lower extremity deep vein thromboses,with concern for sequelae of spontaneous heparin-induced thrombo-cytopenia.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of preventive treatment (PT) on alveolar pulmonary edema (APE) of cardiogenic origin using a monitor based on principles of internal thoracic impedance (ITI) *** We conducted blinded clinical trials on patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and monitored whether the condition would progress to APE. ITI was measured noninvasively by the Edema Guard Monitor (EGM, model RS-207) every 30 min. The measurement threshold for the diagnosis of APE was fixed at > 12% decrease in ITI from baseline as described in our methodology. The patients were divided into one group that received standard treatment after the appearance of clinical signs of APE without considering the prediction of APE by EGM devise (Group 1), and another group of asymptomatic patients in whom development of APE was predicted by using only EGM measurements (Group 2). The latter participants’PT consisted of furosemide, intravenous nitroglycerine and supplemental oxygen. Results One-hundred and fifty patients with acute STEMI were enrolled into this study. Group 1 included 100 patients (53% males, age 64.1 ±12.6 years). Treatment was started after the clinical appearance of overt signs of APE. Group 2 included 50 patients (54% males, age 65.2 ±11.9 years) who received PT based on EGMmeasurements. Group 2 had significantly fewer cases of APE (n = 4, 8%) than Group 1 (n = 100, 100%) (P > 0.001). While APE was lethal in six (6%) Group 1 patients, PT resulted in prompt resolution of APE in all four (8%) Group 2 patients. Conclusion ITI is a usefulmodality for early diagnosis and PT of pulmonary edema of cardiogenic origin.

This paper presents a dynamic analysis of the free and forced vibration of a free-standing bridge of superelastic shape memory alloy TiNiCuCo film with ultra-low fatigue properties and evaluates its versatility for novel miniature scale damping applications.A thermodynamics-based finite element model is used to simulate the evolution of martensite phase fraction during load-induced martensitic phase *** effects of pre-strain,strain rate and excitation load on the hysteresis of stress-strain characteristics are investigated in order to assess damping *** analysis is performed under non-isothermal conditions taking into account heat transfer and rate-dependence of release and absorption of latent *** show that damping energy can be maximized by applying an optimum pre-strain.A maximum damping capacity of 0.17 is determined for the case of complete stressstrain hysteresis loop during phase transformation.
