Thermal stability of bimodal grain structure in a cobalt-based superalloy subjected to high-temperature exposure

The present work investigates the thermal stability and mechanical properties of a Co-20 Cr-15 W-10 Ni(wt%) alloy with a bimodal grain(BG) *** BG structure consisting of fine grains(FGs) and coarse grains(CGs) is thermally stable under high-temperature exposure treatments of 760℃ for 100 h and 870℃ for 100-1000 *** size of both FGs and CGs remains no significant changes after thermal exposure *** microstructural stability is associated with the slow kinetics of grain growth and the pinning of *** thermal stability enables to maintain the BG structures,leading to the same mechanical properties as the sample without thermal exposure *** particular,the BG alloy samples after thermal exposure treatment exhibit superior mechanical properties of both high strength and high ductility compared to the unimodal grain(UG) structured *** BG structure of the alloy samples after thermal exposure is capable of avoiding severe loss of ductility and retaining high *** specifically,the ductility of the BG alloy samples after thermal exposure treatments of 870℃ for 500-1000 h is ten times higher(44.6% vs.3.5% and 52.6% vs.5.0%) than that of the UG *** finding in the present work may give new insights into high-temperature applications of the Co-20 Cr-15 W-10 Ni alloy and other metallic materials with a BG structure.

Development of an adaptive Kalman filter-based storm tide forecasting model

Extreme storm tide usually causes flooding of low-lying land in a coastal city. Hence, developing an efficient and accurate forecasting model for issuing a timely warning is important. In this study, an adaptive Kalman filter-based storm tide forecasting model was proposed and applied to the inner Harbor of Macau. The model is a dynamic linear regression model with the harmonic tidal prediction, wind speed, wind direction and atmospheric pressure as its input parameters. With persistence forecast of weather assumed during the prediction period, the model was tested with 40 cases of storm tide induced by tropical cyclones in Macau between 2005 and 2012. Success was found for forecasts with lead times up to 3 hours. The proposed adaptive model is considered a practical tool for storm tide forecast in small coastal cities.

This paper reviews gravitational wave sources and their detection. One of the most exciting potential sources of gravitational waves are coalescing binary black hole systems. They can occur on all mass scales and be formed in numerous ways, many of which are not understood. They are generally invisible in electromagnetic waves, and they provide opportunities for deep investigation of Einstein's general theory of relativity. Sect. 1 of this paper considers ways that binary black holes can be created in the universe, and includes the prediction that binary black hole coalescence events are likely to be the first gravitational wave sources to be detected. The next parts of this paper address the detection of chirp waveforms from coalescence events in noisy *** analysis is computationally intensive. Sect. 2 reviews a new and powerful method of signal detection based on the GPUimplemented summed parallel infinite impulse response filters. Such filters are intrinsically real time alorithms, that can be used to rapidly detect and localise signals. Sect. 3 of the paper reviews the use of GPU processors for rapid searching for gravitational wave bursts that can arise from black hole births and coalescences. In sect. 4 the use of GPU processors to enable fast efficient statistical significance testing of gravitational wave event candidates is reviewed. Sect. 5 of this paper addresses the method of multimessenger astronomy where the discovery of electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events can be used to identify sources, understand their nature and obtain much greater science outcomes from each identified event.

Carvedilol Versus Other Nonselective Beta Blockers for Variceal Bleeding Prophylaxis and Death: A Network Meta-analysis

Background and Aims:We aimed to perform a network meta-analysis(NWM)to examine comparative effectiveness of non-selective beta blockers(NSBBs)on prophylaxis of gastroesophageal variceal bleeding(GVB)and mortality ***:MEDLINE(OVID)and EMBASE databases were searched for eligible randomized clinical trials(RCTs)from inception to July 3,*** of interest included primary/secondary prophylaxis of GVB,failure to achieve hepatic venous pressure gradient(HVPG)decremental response,liver-related and all-cause mortality.A Bayesian NWM was performed to derive relative risk(RR)with 95%credible intervals(CrIs).The ranking probability of each NSBB was assessed by surface under cumulative ranking curve(SUCRA).Results:Thirty-three RCTs including 3,188 cirrhosis patients with gastroesophageal varices were *** with placebo,nadolol ranked first for reducing variceal bleeding[RR:0.25,(95%CrI:0.11–0.51);SUCRA:0.898],followed by carvedilol[RR:0.33,(95%CrI:0.11–0.88);SUCRA:0.692]and propranolol[RR:0.52,(95%CrI:0.37–0.75);SUCRA:0.405].Carvedilol was more effective than propranolol in achieving HVPG decremental response[RR:0.43,(95%CrI:0.26–0.69)].Carvedilol ranked first for reducing all-cause mortality[RR:0.32,(95%CrI:0.17–0.57);SUCRA:0.963],followed by nadolol[RR:0.48,(95%CI:0.29–0.77);SUCRA:0.688],and propranolol[RR:0.77,(95%CI:0.58–1.02);SUCRA:0.337].Similar findings were observed for liver-related *** ranked the *** RR of adverse events was 4.38,(95%CrI:0.33–161.4);SUCRA:0.530,followed by propranolol[RR:7.54,(95%CrI:1.90–47.89);SUCRA:0.360],and nadolol[RR:18.24,(95%CrI:91.51–390.90);SUCRA:0.158].Conclusions:Carvedilol is the preferred NSBB with better survival benefit and lower occurrence of adverse events among patients with gastroesophageal varices.

Expression of protein S100A4 is a predictor of recurrence in colorectal cancer

AIM: To investigate the prognostic significance of S100A4 expression in colorectal cancer and its correlation with expression of E-cadherin and p53. METHODS: A cohort of archival formalin-fixed paraff inembedded specimens was selected from 127 patients with colorectal cancer who underwent surgical resection between April 2000 and March 2004 at the Department of Surgery, Korea University Guro Hospital. The expression of protein S100A4 was evaluated according to the proportion of positively stained cancer cells. In each case, three core biopsies with a diameter of 2 mm were punched out and positioned in a recipient paraff in array block. Four-μm sections of these tissue array blocks were used for immunohistochemical analysis of protein S100A4, E-cadherin, and p53. Clinicopathological data were based on the original histopathologic reports and clinical records of patients. RESULTS: In normal colorectal mucosa, protein S100A4 immunoreactivity was clearly absent in both cytoplasm and nucleus. However, positive immunoreactivity of protein S100A4 was detected in 45 (35.4%) of the tumor cases. There was no significant association between positive immunoreactivity of protein S100A4 and clinicopathological parameters such as tumor differentiation or TNM stage, and also no correlation between the reactivity and E-cadherin or p53 expression. However, positive immunoreactivity of protein S100A4 was found to be associated with tumor recurrence (P = 0.004), and was also associated with significantly worse overall survival in the Kaplan-Meyer survival analysis (P = 0.044). After adjustment for tumor differentiation, tumor depth and nodal status, however, it failed to achieve statistical significance (P = 0.067). CONCLUSION: The expression of protein S100A4 is associated with tumor recurrence and poor overall survival in patients with colorectal cancer.

＜正＞ By evaluating the profitability of the moving average technical trading rules, we test the weak-form efficiency of Hong Kong’s private residential market. Based on a repeated-sales housing price index, we find that the trading rules that rely on the stock market property index as the buy/sell signal generator produce higher profits and higher Sharpe ratios than does investing in the property stocks. We may obtain even higher profits when the gearing characteristic of down payments is considered. Simulated results show that profitability and speculative transactions decreases with increasing transaction costs and down payments.

Continuously emergence of human infection with avian influenza A virus poses persistent threat to public health,as illustrated in zoonotic H5N1/6 and H7N9 *** recent surge of infection to farmed mink by multiple subtypes of avian influenza A viruses in China highlights the role of mink in the ecology of influenza in this *** studies suggested that farmed mink in China are frequently infected with prevailing human(H3N2 and H1N1/pdm)and avian(H7N9,H5N6,and H9N2)influenza A ***,genetic analysis from the sequences of influenza viruses from mink showed that several strains acquired mammalian adaptive mutations compared to their avian *** transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from mink to human alerts us that mink may serve as an intermediate host or reservoir of some emerging *** the high susceptibility to different influenza A viruses,it is possible that mink in endemic regions may play a role as an“mixing vessel”for generating novel pandemic ***,enhanced surveillance of influenza viruses in mink should be urgently implemented for early warning of potential pandemic.

Polo-like kinase 1,a new therapeutic target in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM： To investigate the role of polo-like kinase 1 （PLK1） as a therapeutic target for hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）. METHODS： PLK1 gene expression was evaluated in HCC tissue and HCC cell lines. Gene knockdown with short-interfering RNA （siRNA） was used to study PLK1 gene and protein expression using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） and Western blotting, and cell proliferation using 3-（4,5-dim ethylthiazol-2-yl）-5-（3-carboxymethoxyphenyl）-2（4-sulf ophenyl）-2H-tetrazolium （MTS） and bromodeoxyuridine （BrdU） assays. Apoptosis was evaluated using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end label- ing （TUNEL） assay, and caspase-inhibition assay. Huh-7 cells were transplanted into nude mice and co-cultured with PLK1 siRNA or control siRNA, and tumor progres- sion was compared with controls. RESULTS： RT-PCR showed that PLK1 was overexpre- ssed 12-fold in tumor samples compared with controls, and also was overexpressed in Huh-7 cells, siRNA against PLK1 showed a reduction in PLK1 gene and protein expression of up to 96% in Huh-7 cells, and a reduction in cell proliferation by 68% and 92% in MTS and BrdU cell proliferation assays, respectively. There was a 3-fold increase in apoptosis events, and TUNEL staining and caspase-3 assays suggested that this was caspase-independent. The pan-caspase inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK was unable to rescue the apoptotic cells. Immnofluorescence co-localized endonuclease-G to fragmented chromosomes, implicating it in apoptosis. Huh-7 cells transplanted subcutaneously into nude mice showed tumor regression in siPLKl-treated mice, but not in controls. CONCLUSION： Knockdown of PLK1 overexpression in HCC was shown to be a potential therapeutic target, leading to apoptosis through the endonuclease-G path- way.
