Weather Induced Quasi-Periodic Motions in Estuaries and Bays:Meteoro-logical Tide

Influenced by weather, the estuaries and bays often exhibit recurring oscillations in flow and water level similar to astronomical tides. The weather impact however is less regular than tides and more difficult to predict. The spectrum of weather induced motions in estuaries and bays is mostly at the low-frequency end with time scales longer than those of diurnal tides. The repeated weather impact produces meteorological tide: the recurring flood and ebb and flushing of the estuaries and bays but at lower frequencies than those of tides. The variation in weather conditions is quasi-periodic and of large scale nature(~1000-3000 km) because of the alternating low-and high-atmospheric pressure systems of extra-tropical cyclones and anti-cyclones and associated fronts. By examining 40 years of data between Jan. 1, 1977 and Dec. 31, 2016, we identified 1648 frontal events(averaging ~41.2±4.7 per year)influencing the northern Gulf of Mexico for time periods in the spring, fall and winter. The late spring and summer months(May, Jun, July, and August) were not included in the calculation because of much weaker activities involving synoptic weather systems with fronts during these months. It is found that the number of frontal events reached the maximum in Jan. and Dec. while the minimum occurred in April and Sept. It is found that there is an increasing trend of number of fronts over the 40-year period. Our data show that the low pass filtered water level,velocity, and vorticity(velocity shear) all vary in response to the weather and appear as the meteorological tide. The particle excursions of meteorological tides are much larger than those from the astronomical tides. In addition, the irregular nature of the meteorological tide makes the inward flux and outward flux asymmetric in general and thus it has a significant implication to dispersion and transport of waterborne materials. Cysteine is the precursor for the biosynthesis of glutathione,a key stress-protective metabolite,and methionine,which is imperative for cell growth and protein *** exact mechanism that governs the routing of cysteine toward glutathione or methionine during stresses remains *** study reveals that under oxidative stress,methionine and glutathione compete for cysteine and that the increased oxidized glutathione(GSSG)levels under stress hinder methionine ***,we find that inhibition occurs as GSSG binds to and accelerates the degradation of cystathionineγ-synthase,a key enzyme in the methionine synthesis ***,this leads to a reduction in the flux toward methionine-derived metabolites and redirects cysteine utilization toward glutathione,thereby enhancing plant *** study suggests a novel regulatory feedback loop involving glutathione,methionine,and cysteine,shedding light on the plant stress response and the adaptive rerouting of *** findings offer new insights into the intricate balance of growth and protection in plants and its impact on their nutritional value due to low methionine levels under stress.

A Review of Human Vulnerabilities in Cyber Security: Challenges and Solutions for Microfinance Institutions

This review examines human vulnerabilities in cybersecurity within Microfinance Institutions, analyzing their impact on organizational resilience. Focusing on social engineering, inadequate security training, and weak internal protocols, the study identifies key vulnerabilities exacerbating cyber threats to MFIs. A literature review using databases like IEEE Xplore and Google Scholar focused on studies from 2019 to 2023 addressing human factors in cybersecurity specific to MFIs. Analysis of 57 studies reveals that phishing and insider threats are predominant, with a 20% annual increase in phishing attempts. Employee susceptibility to these attacks is heightened by insufficient training, with entry-level employees showing the highest vulnerability rates. Further, only 35% of MFIs offer regular cybersecurity training, significantly impacting incident reduction. This paper recommends enhanced training frequency, robust internal controls, and a cybersecurity-aware culture to mitigate human-induced cyber risks in MFIs.

Rice varieties tolerant to submergence regulate shoot elongation during short-term submergence by expressing the SUB1A *** contrast,the deep-rooted DRO1 is effectively expressed under drought conditions to enhance water and nutrient *** study investigates the growth and yield of rice with both SUB1A and DRO1 in the background of IR64,under early-season flooding,and mid-season *** study used a randomized complete design with two factors:soil moisture treatments(submergence,drought,and their combination)and *** genotypes included IR64,and three near-isogenic lines(NILs):NIL-SUB1DRO1,NIL-SUB1,and *** submergence was imposed for 7 days on 14-day-old seedlings,while drought was imposed on control and submerged plants following a 21-day recovery period from submergence,using 42-day-old *** were measured before and after treatments(submergence and drought),and at harvest or grain *** stresses negatively affected the *** harvest,IR64 and NIL-SUB1DRO1 under both stresses showed a significant reduction in tiller numbers,shoot dry weights,and yields compared to their control ***64 exhibited a significant delay in reaching flowering under all *** rice introgression lines showed significant improvements in tolerance to the *** study showed no negative consequences of combining drought and submergence tolerance in rice.
