The Immune System and the Role of Inflammation in Perinatal Depression

Major depression during pregnancy is a common psychiatric disorder that arises from a complex and mul- tifactorial etiology. Psychosocial stress, sex, hormones, and genetic vulnerability increase the risk for triggering mood disorders. Microglia and toll-like receptor 4 play a crucial role in triggering wide and varied stress-induced responses mediated through activation of the inflammasome; this leads to the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, increased serotonin metabolism, and reduction of neurotransmitter availability along with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity. Dysregulation of this intricate neu- roimmune communication network during pregnancy modifies the maternal milieu, enhancing the emergence of depressive symptoms and negative obstetric and neu- ropsychiatric outcomes. Although several studies have clearly demonstrated the role of the innate immune system in major depression, it is still unclear how the placenta, the brain, and the monoaminergic and neuroendocrine systems interact during perinatal depression. Thus, in the present review we describe the cellular and molecular interactions between these systems in major depression during preg- nancy, proposing that the same stress-related mechanisms involved in the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in microglia and peripheral myeloid cells in depressed patients operate in a similar fashion in the neuroimmune placenta during perinatal depression. Thus, activation of Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 signaling and the NLRP3 inflammasome in placental immune cells may promote a shift of the Thl/Th2 bias towards a predominant Thl/Thl7 inflammatory response, associated with increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, among other secreted autocrine and paracrine mediators, which play a crucial role in triggering and/or exacerbating depressive symptoms during pregnancy.

In environmental science, data are often obtained from physically based computer models or monitoring networks. It is of importance to accommodate the spatial misalignment between the two data sources for calibration of the computer model and better forecast in the future. In this work we propose a spatial model for Gaussian process within Bayesian framework to calibrate not only the marginal distribution, but also the covariance structure of the computer model outputs. We apply our methodology to temperature and precipitation data, and show how our strategy can help to adjust for bias of the computer model.

The Various Description of Biodiversity in Compulsory Education Textbooks

We intend to establish how species diversity is dealt with, within the study of the ecosystem, in books for the 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education, ESO （15-16 year-old students）. The analysis was carried out using a key issues dossier based on school science, which not only provides a description of reality, but also introduces a theoretical explanatory framework. Regarding species diversity, we focused on the descriptive approach, considering the link between diversity and trophic relationships, ecological succession and ecosystem stability through change, consequences for biodiversity of human activities and mechanisms to face such consequences; and on the explanatory perspective, which provides an interpretative answer for all the aspects previously mentioned. The findings drawn from textbooks show that biodiversity is linked both to the study of the ecosystem and to the impact of human societies on its maintenance. However, such study is particularly focused on the descriptive, rather than on the explanatory level. So, teachers should improve the study of biodiversity foresting a balance between descriptive and explanatory level.

Characteristics of Thyroid Hormones in Hypertensive Hispanic Population

The aim was to characterize thyroid function in Hispanic hypertensive population. Retrospective study of 1,023 individuals was performed, in which 68.23% had hypertension （74.21% women） and 37.25% had thyroid pathology. Age, weight, blood pressure, biochemical measurements were recorded, mean age： 53.02 ± 14.80 yr, mean weight： 83.05 ±16.95 kg, thyrotropin-stimulating hormone （TSH） hypertensive patients： 5.55±1.63 μUI/mL and without hypertension： 3,72 ± 1.60 μUI/mL. TSH range concentration distributed by sex indicates： 1.50-2.49 μUI/mL men, 2.50-5.01 μUI/mL women. TSH categories vs. age were positively associated （r = ＋ 0.114, P = 0.044） and hypertension by age was also correlated （r = ＋ 0.178, P = 0.0001）. Significant positive association we found between TSH and diastolic blood pressure （r = ＋ 0.197, P = 0.008）. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure vs. age were positively increasing （r = ＋ 0.410,p = 0.0001; r = ＋0.285, P = 0.0001, respectively）. Prevalence of thyroid pathology in hypertensive subjects are hyperthyroidism 5.87%; hypothyroidism 20.34% （5.73% subclinic） and autoimmune disease 6.25%. High percentage of hypertensive population has concomitant thyroid diseases, more common in women （50-70 years）. Systematic surveillance for occult thyroid dysfunction in patients with hypertension could prevent future cardiovascular disease.

Rhizosphere soil samples of three Pinus chiapensis sites were analyzed for their physicochemical properties,soil bacteria isolated and screened in vitro for growthpromoting *** isolates that showed promise were identified to five genera Dyella,Luteimonas,Euterobacter,Paraburkholderia and Bacillus based on the sequences of16 S rRNA *** the strains were isolated from nondisturbed *** bacteria significantly decreased germination time and increased sprout *** acetic acid and gibberellin production and phosphate solubilisation were *** indicate that these biochemicals could be essential for *** distribution and suggest the possibility that PGPR inoculation on *** seeds prior to planting could improve germination and possibly seedling development.

Lightweight Approach to Connect Business Rules with Aspects

Aspectual connection that compose business rule, refers to the code in charge of not only triggering the application of the rules at certain events, but also gathering the necessary information for their application and incorporating their results in the rest of the core application functionality. We propose an approach to connect business rule with aspect systematically. This approach is agile, programming language-independent, business rules type independent and it can be used in different stages of development. This approach considers the identification, analysis and construction of connections with aspects, (aspectual connection). We use our experience and previous works to define the initial steps, and complete them with the analysis of interactions and propose methods to implement aspectual connections code. We have developed a tool that supports this approach.

Experimental culture of non-indigenous Juncus bufonius from King George Island, South Shetland Island, Antarctica

Juncus bufonius L. （Juncaceae） is recognized by the US Department of Agriculture as a weed or invasive plant. Recently, we reported on 3i bufonius L. var. bufonius associated with the native vascular plants Deschampsia antarctica and Colobanthus quitensis in the environs of the Polish Arctowski Station, King George Island, in the Maritime Antarctica. In this study, we evaluated the developmental stages and morphological characteristics of J. bufonius plants cultivated in controlled conditions beginning with seeds obtained from plants of the Antarctic population. Germination occurred at 3 weeks and the germination percentage was low （22.5%）. The average time between the anthesis and seed formation was 7 weeks, similar to that reported for other species in the Juncaceae. According to data reported in the literature, Antarctic individuals were significantly smaller than their relatives growing in other conditions, except for the number of inflorescences. The morphological characteristics of a species vary according to its distribution and the edaphoclimatic environment where it occur; cosmopolitan plants shuch as J. bufonius also have reduced stature in cold environments. The low percentage germination may have been due to water availability in the plant chamber in which the study was conducted. J. bufonius is intolerant of dry environments, and once it suffers hydric stress its recovery is very low; thus, a moister environment could be beneficial. J. bufonius has become established amongst native vegetation near Arctowski Station and without careful control or eradication; it may have the potential to spread far beyond the site, as has happened with the alien grass Poa annua as human disturbance and climate warming increase.

A new configuration of a resonant full-bridge flying capacitor multicell inverter has been designed and constructed with the aim of achieving an extended output voltage frequency range with low harmonic distortion and reduced semiconductor commutation losses. This configuration was tested as a power supply for two different coaxial dielectric barrier discharge reactors, one of them employed for electric characterization and the other one for inorganic compound elimination in an aqueous solution. Two different gas mixtures, 90% Ar-10% 02 and 80% Ar-20% 02, were individually supplied during the experiments; the results showed a high- efficiency removal of meta-cresol （m-cresol） to the order of 98%, which was obtained by adding more oxygen to the plasma gas mixture.

First Report on the Presence of Phyllachora sp. in Corn Crops at Toluca, Estado de Mexico

Symptoms of Tar Spot Complex (TSC) in corn appear in the form of black spots surrounded by a chlorotic halo known as fish-eye. The crop with these symptoms was found at San Pablo Autopan, Estado de Mexico. The stromal region of foliar lesions was cut longitudinally, showing perithecia, asci and ascospores typical of Phyllachora maydis. The results were confirmed by PCR-ITS with ITS 1 and ITS4 initiators, cloned by pJET, before being sequenced and compared against NCBI’s data base. Phyllachora identity was confirmed. This is the first report where TSC pathogen has been detected under conditions that had not been previously reported, for instance, at 2600 meters above the sea level.
