A Geometric.lly-Nonlinear Plate Theory

An approximate plate theory developed in this paper is based on an assumed displac.ment field, the strains desc.ibed by a Taylor series in the normal distanc.from the middle surfac., the exac. strains of the middle surfac. and the equations ofequilibrium governing the exac. c.nfiguration of the deformed middle surfac.. In thistheory the exac. geometry of the deformed middle surfac. is used to derive the strainsand equilibrium of the plate. Applic.tion of this theory does not depend on the c.nstitutive law. This theory c.n reduc. to some existing nonlinear theories through impositionof c.nstraints.

The energy inc.ement spec.rum method is developed for the numeric.l predic.ion of the appearanc. and disappearanc. of a primary (2M :1)-librational or (M:1)- rotational resonant separatrix band in a parametric.lly exc.ted pendulum. The analytic.l c.nditions for the presenc. of suc. separatrix bands are also obtained. Illustrations of the analytic.l and numeric.l results for the appearanc. and destruc.ion of the resonant bands are given for a c.mparison.

The resonant c.nditions for traveling waves in rotating disks are derived. The nolilinear resonant spec.rum of a rotating disk is c.mputed from the resonant *** a resonant spec.rum is useful for the disk drive industry to determine the range of operational rotation speed. The resonant wave motions for linear and uonlinear, rotating driks are simulated numeric.lly for a 3.5-inc. diameter c.mputer memory disk.
